It took a few hours for the news to be released, but by all indications, Ryan Newman is okay. NASCAR officials said Newman had non life-threatening injuries following a horrific crash at the end of the Daytona 500 on Monday.Newman is in serious condition after being transported to the hospital. As Newman approached the finish line of the Daytona 500 on Monday, he was set to win his first Daytona 500 in 12 years. But a nudge from behind sent Newman into the wall as his competitors crossed the finish line. The crash allowed Denny Hamlin to win his second straight Daytona 500. As Hamlin celebrated the win, attention quickly turned to Newman, whose car spun out of control and burst into flames. After Newman's car struck the wall and flipped, it was then struck at full speed by Corey LaJoie's vehicle, causing Newman's car to flip again. Emergency crews raced to rescue Newman following the stunning crash. The celebration for Hamlin was subdued following the race."I think we take for granted sometimes how safe the cars are," Hamlin said. "But No. 1, we're praying for Ryan. Worked really well with Ryan through this whole race, and obviously he got turned right there."Ryan Blaney, who came in second place, described his view of the incident. "We pushed Newman there to the lead, and then we got a push from the 11 (Danny Hamlin's car), and I made a move off 4 (Kevin Harvick's car) on Newman and he blocked it and I kind of went low and he blocked that, so then I was committed to just pushing him to the win and trying to have a Ford win it, and I don't know, we just got bumpers hooked up wrong and turned him," Blaney said. "I hope he's all right. Looked pretty good. Definitely was trying to push him to a win. I don't want to say those things happen. I feel really bad about it."The Daytona 500 was pushed to Monday after rain forced the postponement of the race on Sunday.Watch video below of the race's finish:Here is the final lap of the Daytona 500 in which Ryan Newman's car was flipped at the line. We will continue to keep you updated on his status as we learn more. 2101

In the record-setting 562 participants of this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, you will find nine sets of siblings. Sisters Triyatha and Pranathi Jamulla are one set of the siblings, and they think it’s pretty cool they both made it to the national competition. Last year, Triyatha watched Pranathi come in 25thplace in the National Spelling Bee, and it made her want to compete too. This year, the sisters tied in their school’s spelling bee, both earning a trip to nationals. It gave Pranathi a built-in study buddy.“Before, when it would just be me sitting at home and my sister would be out somewhere and doing something else, like it wouldn't be that motivating to study because I know like I'd rather be where she is,” Pranathi says. “And now that we're both in the room studying, it makes it easier to study, I guess.”It also meant Triyatha had an expert to tell her what to expect."Yeah, she definitely helps me to stay calm and composed and gives me a few tips on like winning languages and language patterns,” Triyatha explains.Their mom, Prasanna Jammula, says it’s easier having two spellers in the house.“They quiz each other. That's how they are learning, too," she says. "Now, we are on the same page right. Everybody’s working towards [the] spelling bee, so that makes it easy.”She says what matters most here is the girls’ experience. 1368

It’s Saturday night service at Northview Church in Carmel, Indiana. As parishioners pack the pews, they start singing about the power of giving. Preaching from the pulpit, senior pastor Steve Poe focuses the night’s sermon on how small donations can have a big impacts. This Indiana-based church is truly helping their neighbors in need! Members of this congregation raised ,000 in donations and used that money to help pay off more than .6 million of medical debt for Indiana citizens.“That will have an impact on 2,500 people or more,” says Poe.With Poe's church buying 30 percent of all medical debt in seven different zip codes across greater Indiana, the pastor says this is financial rehabilitation through religion. In a few weeks, the families whose debts will be covered will receive letters. “What that does then, it will notify their creditors that their debt has been cleared, which gives them the opportunity to start again without this damaging debt," Poe says. "Without this debt hanging over their heads."Northview Church worked with the organization RIP Medical Debt to purchase debt at pennies on the dollar. Founder Craig Antico explains how it works, and why they don’t know the names of the people that they’ve helped. “RIP Medical Debt abolishes medical debt for the poor and those in hardship,” Antico says. “The way that we do it is we go and buy medical debt from either hospitals, doctors, or even the collector investors to buy the debt to make them nonprofit.”A study in the American Journal of Public Health found that medical debt contributes to two-thirds of bankruptcy filings. So, debt relief like this can be life changing. “I could not come up with any words; I was so caught off guard,” says Lisa Sole, who is a recipient of a Northview Church donation. Sole used ,500 dollars to cover medical bills and other debt.“When you are granted the gift of debt being taken away from you, the amount of stress that it relieves off of your body is so healing,” she says. With that kind of healing, Sole was inspired to pass it on and pay it forward, saying it’s truly better to give than receive. “It’s exciting to see the next person’s acceptance and how they’re excited compared to us and the feeling you get,” she says. 2266

Jesse Walaschek says 15 to 20 seconds saved him and his family. The 41-year-old, his wife and three kids -- ages 8, 6 and 4 -- had just left a fitness center at a shopping mall in the South Florida city of Plantation when a possible gas explosion Saturday shattered parts of the building, injuring at least 23 people, including two with serious injuries."We felt the loudest boom that you could possibly feel. I looked in my rear view mirror and it was just a dust cloud," Walaschek told CNN. "Had we walked out of that gym 15 seconds later, I would've been getting my kids in the car when it went off. I probably wouldn't be here, my kids wouldn't be here."A search of the blast zone has been completed, police said. There were no fatalities and all the victims have been located, Plantation Fire Deputy Chief Joel Gordon told reporters during a Saturday afternoon press conference. All the injured were taken to area hospitals, he said. Among the injured was a child, but the injuries were not classified as serious, Gordon said."We're relieved that considering the debris field and considering how we found the patients and where we found them, the injuries are not as severe as we would've thought they would be. So we're very thankful for that," Gordon said. The blast appeared to have occurred in a corner of the mall complex where two buildings intersect.News footage and social media video showed firefighters arriving at the mall, where windows were blown out of an LA Fitness and the facade of a pizza restaurant appeared to be blown out. A section of the complex appeared to sustain significant damage, with shattered windows and scattered debris.'It was almost like the world was ending'Walaschek was driving said while he is thankful they made it out safely, he worried about other families at the gym."Thing that was on my mind actually was the 20 to 25 children we saw in the children's area when we left," he said.Witnesses described a chaotic scene following the explosion.Alex Carver, who works at a deli across the street from where the explosion occurred, said he and his colleagues initially thought the sound was thunder."Then we felt the building shake and things started falling. I looked outside and it was almost like the world was ending," Carver, told 2289
