SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Local community activists put together a report that shows what they’re calling the roadmap to racial inequality, basing it on housing data from the 1930s.On Thursday morning, members of the community used red paint to outline zoning lines of the streets of Kensington. The lines were a physical representation of what happened after the Great Depression under the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.Ricardo Flores, executive director of Local Initiatives Support Corporation, said, “The very benign use of zoning actually created segregation this day. It says if you can buy 7,000 square feet of land then you can live in this neighborhood.”Flores’ group and other organizations took to the streets to promote the data.“Today, in this day and age, you can ask a high school kid, ‘Where do black and brown people live?’ You ask any adult, ‘Where do black and brown people live? How do they know that? How is it so embedded in us?” said Flores.The activists hope to get support from San Diego officials and a promise in changing the way housing decisions are made.Flores said, “They should look at that parcel of land and allow them to be subdivided, sold, or build on it and rent it out.” 1221

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It should be no surprise at this point that home prices are still on the rise in San Diego this April. A new report from Zillow shows that, year-to-year, home values in San Diego have risen more than eight percent. According to Zillow, the median home value in San Diego currently sits at just over 5,000. That change marks an increase of 8.4 percent since last April.Meanwhile, rent is also on the rise at a median of just over ,500, or an increase of 3.6 percent since last April.Click on the charts below for more information:  The high cost of housing in San Diego is in stark contrast with national home values.The median home value nationally is 5,600. If there's one thing San Diego and the rest of the nation have in common in this report it's that both saw home values increase by more than eight percent.“Home values are rising faster than we’ve seen in a very long time: The spring home shopping season has been a perfect storm of strong demand and tight supply,” said Zillow senior economist Aaron Terrazas.Nationally, the number of new homes being built is also seeing a decrease. “Sluggish new construction has exacerbated the supply situation and homes that are hitting the market, are moving very quickly once they do. Americans are also in a spending mood, boosted by recent tax cuts and rising wages. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lifeguards say two people were rescued from a trail in the Blacks Beach area on Sunday in separate incidents.The first involved a woman who injured her ankle, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. The woman was about half-way down before being injured. Lifeguards put her on a stretcher and used ropes to lower her down to the beach. She was taken by lifeguards to meet paramedics.The second occurred on the same trail, involving a woman suffering from heat exhaustion. She was unable to make it down the rest of the trail, requiring lifeguards to hoist her to the beach below to get her to paramedics.Lifeguards said with Labor Day weekend approaching and a heatwave expected next weekend, they are reminding visitors to local trails to know their limits, wear proper footwear for uneven beach terrain, and make sure they have plenty of water.Beach lifeguards say they don't expect to see crowds slow down anytime soon. 945
