(AP) — Experts say it’s going to take months to kick elite hackers widely believed to be Russian out of U.S. government networks. The hackers have been quietly rifling through those networks for months in Washington’s worst cyberespionage failure on record. Experts say there simply are not enough threat-hunting teams to identify all the government and private-sector systems that may have been hacked. (AP) - With CBD showing up everywhere, U.S. regulators announced Tuesday they are exploring ways the marijuana extract could be used legally in foods, dietary supplements and cosmetics.The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it will hold a public hearing May 31 to gather more information on the science, manufacturing and sale of cannabis compounds like CBD.In the meantime, it issued more warning letters to companies for making unapproved health claims about CBD products.Products containing CBD are already in stores and sold online, so it's easy to believe there must be something special about the ingredient. It's extracted using alcohol or carbon dioxide in factories. Some human research has been done, but in small numbers of people.One exception: For two rare seizure disorders, the evidence for CBD was strong enough to convince the FDA to approve GW Pharmaceutical's drug Epidiolex, which contains a purified form.The FDA announced Tuesday it has sent warning letters to three companies marketing products with what outgoing Commissioner Scott Gottlieb called "egregious, over-the-line claims" for CBD's effects on cancer, Alzheimer's disease, fibromyalgia and drug addiction. In epilepsy research, CBD changed the way the body processed other drugs. That suggests CBD could interact with medications in ways we still don't know about.The most common side effects of the CBD drug Epidiolex include sleepiness, decreased appetite, diarrhea, increases in liver enzymes, exhaustion, rash and infections. FDA's Gottlieb noted Tuesday the potential for liver injury and other risks can be handled with medical supervision but less is known about how that would be managed without oversight. And there are questions about overlap if multiple CBD products are used.IS IT LEGAL?For now, the agency has said CBD is not allowed as an ingredient in food, drinks or dietary supplements.In stating its position, the FDA cited a provision of the law prohibiting food makers from using active drug ingredients or those that are the subject of substantial research. Over the next 48 hours, the atmosphere is not favorable for development, but conditions look more favorable as we move into the weekend.The National Hurricane Center says there is a 70% chance that a subtropical or tropical depression could form in the Gulf of Mexico.The American forecast model has been very wishy-washy on the location. Most of its runs have shown the storm moving across the Florida peninsula. The European model has been a little more consistent, showing a tropical or subtropical storm drifting ashore near New Orleans.No matter where this storm moves or how strong it becomes, it will continue to bring tropical moisture into the South from Louisiana to North Carolina. The heaviest rain will fall near the Gulf, with Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama seeing seven-day rainfall totals of 4 to 7 inches.If it gets strong enough to become a subtropical or tropical storm, with sustained winds of 39 miles per hour (63 kilometers per hour) or greater, it will be named Alberto.As we have seen in years past, environmental conditions sometimes allow for development before the hurricane season begins. The last time a tropical cyclone was named Alberto was in 2012; it also formed before the season began, on May 19. (CNN) -- As the global economy shudders, the Middle East boils and the Amazon rainforest burns, world leaders are convening on France's Atlantic coast for a weekend of talks few believe can solve any of it.President Donald Trump arrived in France on Saturday morning after an overnight flight from Washington, his arrival preceded by more tit-for-tat tariff action that economists -- and most of the other Group of 7 heads -- believe is contributing to a global economic slump.His first stop was a sunny patio for lunch across from his host, French President Emmanuel Macron."So far, so good," Trump said, an optimistic assessment minutes into his three-day visit to France. "The weather is fantastic. Everybody's getting along. I think we will accomplish a lot this weekend."And while Macron made little effort to paper over his differences with Trump -- including on what he called "hot spots" like climate change -- Trump insisted they were getting along, at least most of the time."Once in a while we go at it just a little bit, not very much," he said.Later, he's due to attend a dinner for the leaders Saturday evening at the base of a tall white lighthouse planted atop a rocky cliff overlooking elegant Biarritz, the venue for this year's summit. Formal talks begin Sunday morning.World leaders have plenty to discuss. Festering foreign policy matters like Iran and fresh tensions between India and Pakistan are on the table.
