SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - It started as a thesis project and now is a tool for any musician in the world to use. Dr. Chris Warren is an Assistant Professor of Digital Composition and Sound Design at San Diego State University and said “Echo Thief” started about ten years ago and is a project he’s been growing ever since. He’s been traveling around North America and using an acoustic measurement tool to gather and capture sound in different types of acoustic environments. His personal addition to the recording field is creating a way to capture sound in noisy environments. Typically, the reverb of a space can only be captured when it’s silent, like in a church. However, he has created a way do it in a loud area, like capturing the sound of being under a bridge even if there are cars driving by. He’s been using the library and plug-in with his audio production students. Then Kayla Gautereaux, a former SDSU student who is now on the faculty at the New England Conservatory, came to him and asked the audio pro if there would be a way for musicians to use his tool for their practice. Warren then created an easy-to-use website for anyone to play music or sing, and have it sound like they’re in a variety of locations. “We were able to take the sounds from around North America, a bunch of fascinating acoustic spaces, and make reverberators out them so people can virtually perform in these spaces,” he said. Gautereaux said she can now sit in her living room and sing, but it sounds like she’s somewhere else. “It feels like you’re there not just because the app has a picture there, but because you can hear the response of your voice or whatever instrument you play into that space,” she said. She also added that the space a musician performs inside is just as important as an instrument or vocals, so this is a welcome addition to the music world. 1873

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- As of today, it is illegal to live in your car in the city of San Diego. This controversial law took effect right after yesterday night's City Council vote. Homeowners in many San Diego neighborhoods said it is about some regulation is enforced. But homeless advocates called it a human rights violation. 10News met with two "van-lifers," as they called themselves. One of them was 39-year-old Jason Thorwegen. He said he is a Southern California native, who has been homeless since childhood."I started being homeless at the age of 8 years old," Thorwegen said. He admitted, it has not been easy, and that he is not perfect. But he never thought he would be in trouble, while trying to stay out of trouble, inside his van. Tuesday night, San Diego City Council approved the updated the Vehicle Habitation Ordinance, after residents complained about health and safety. "People who live in my neighborhood are defecating and urinating on the street, I see it. and I live it," one lady said at the Council meeting Tuesday.RELATED: San Diego City Council passes restrictions on living in vehiclesStarting Wednesday, living in a vehicle is illegal on city streets between 9 pm and 6 am unless parked in a designated Safe Parking Zone. "It's kind of disheartening, to be honest, to see that it's not as comprehensive as it could have should have been," Teresa Smith said. Smith runs the non-profit organization, "Dreams For Change," which provides 60 safe parking spaces throughout the city. The city currently has 120 spaces, with plans to offer more this year. "Even though as much as they try to say it was not around criminalization, I do not see how it is not," Smith said.10News also spoke to "van-lifer," Maria Ennis. She plans to get the ACLU on her side, to fight that the untimely law, is a human rights violation. "If they are making more parking lots, why don't they make the parking lots first? And then try to make that law?" Ennis asked.Thorwegen said the new lots would not change his lifestyle."I have anxieties that prevent me from living inside," Thorwegen said. He said he has non-combat-related PTSD and other illnesses. That is why started "Van for a Plan."The Go-Fund-me campaign asks people to donate old vans. He then converts them to be provided to clean, homeless veterans. "We want them to do the work, and that way, they can earn the vans," Thrrwegen said. He is working on his second van now. But now with this new ordinance, he is worried his efforts will become mute."What didn't help was when people made it illegal for me to be. You know, illegal for me, to be," Thorwegen said.The city said officers would first have to be trained about the new ordinance before issuing tickets. But Smith anticipated people would likely find other ways to avoid the consequences."So one of the issues we suspect is going to start, is people will start moving right outside the city limits. Among them were Sir Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Del Arco and Jeri Ryan.Fifty years to the day after the first moon landing, Trekkers got an intergalactic treat at San Diego Comic-Con. At the panel, fans got to see a sneak preview of "Star Trek: Discovery The Third Season" and the new animated series "Star Trek: Below Deck". The biggest applause came when Sir Patrick Stewart, who plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard appeared on stage. Stwart returns to the franchise in the new series, "Star Trek: Picard," a story about the Captain after "Star Trek: Next Generation"."I knew that something very unusual was going to happen, and I wanted to be a part of it," Stewart said. San Diego (KGTV)- While millions are bracing for Hurricane Dorian, San Diegans are preparing to take part in relief efforts. Volunteers and first responders are making their way to the impacted areas. A handful of American Red Cross volunteers left Monday. Twelve others are already getting their assignments in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. “This is a major response for us,” says Sean Mahoney, Regional CEO for the American Red Cross. “We sent 99 semi-trucks full of sheltering equipment, cots, blankets, and everything needed for folks when they’re put out of their homes.”Mahoney also left Monday heading to the Carolinas. In total, 16 volunteers from the San Diego area are assigned to help with relief efforts, but more are ready to go if needed. “We have 22-hundred volunteers in the San Diego and Imperial counties region. They’re all checking their status, just making sure that they have the qualifications needed.”Volunteers would assist with mass care, feeding, and shelter. The San Diego Urban Search and Rescue team spent the morning loading up supplies. After a morning conference call with FEMA, David Gerboth says the team could be called to the east coast. “They are looking at mobilizing additional search and rescue teams now from the west coast,” says Gerboth. “So we’re configuring our cache to be able to mobilize at a moments notice.”The team is prepared to spend at least a week on the east coast, assisting victims with search and rescue, collapsed structures, and more. The San Diego Urban Search and Rescue team has already sent five members to assist with logistics. Those helping with storm relief would typically drive to the impacted areas. But this time around, if they are called out, first responders will fly to get there by the time the storm makes landfall. “We know when we go and help our friends on the east coast, they’re also ready to come in case we need it on the west coast.” 1936

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The special needs teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student, pleaded not guilty to 20 felony counts. He also declared he would represent himself in the case. Against the advice of the judge, 49-year-old Juan Carlos Herrera told the courtroom, he will fight this alone. "I would like to represent myself," Herrera said. Relinquishing rights to counsel, the San Diego High school special needs teacher read the 20 felonies for the first time inside the defendant's box. Those charges include having sex, performing other sex acts, and physically and emotionally abusing one student between February 2018 and this March, when she was 15 and 16 years old."They occurred on an almost daily basis," Deputy District Attorney, Jessica Coto said. "They took place in hotels, in his car, and in his classroom." Coto said his ongoing manipulation extended to making threats."The defendant also routinely threatened the victim, that if she told anybody about what was happening, that she would cut off her arms and legs," Coto said. This all came to light on May 5, 2019, when police arrested Herrera at the US-Mexico border. Days prior, the girl's mother found inappropriate messages from Herrera on her daughter's phone.Because of the nature of the charges, and Herrera's second home in Mexico, the prosecution requested million bail. As his own attorney, Herrera fought back, saying he is a Navy veteran with a 25-year clean record with the district."It's not conceivable for someone with my earnings to make million, nor would I flee," Herrera pleaded. "I have been a person of honor and honesty since the beginning."The judge disagreed and kept the bail at million, handing Herrera his first loss, leaving him in utter disbelief.The judge also put a criminal protection order for the now-17-year-old victim. If convicted, Herrera could face a maximum of 16 years eight months in prison. But the prosecution mentioned, more time could be added if they find more evidence of sexual abuse. 2037
