He was later convicted on murder and hate crime charges. He was sentenced to death and is awaiting execution at a federal prison in Indiana.The massacre at Mother Emanuel AME church on June 17, 2015, led South Carolina leaders to remove the Confederate flag from the capitol lawn.But as the U.S. is roiled again by more shocking deaths of African Americans, South Carolina isn't removing more monuments of historical figures who repressed or oppressed blacks.Republican leaders like House Speaker Jay Lucas said in 2015 they would not consider any more changes after the Confederate flag came down and have kept their word. And state law protects monuments without a two-thirds vote of the Legislature.To mark the anniversary of the massacre, the people behind the documentary “Emanuel” will hold a discussion about racial justice. The movie explores the shooting and race relations in the port city that once served as a gateway to the slave trade.Producers Mariska Hargitay and Viola Davis will be part of the discussion, and U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clayborn will host the event, The Post and Courier reports.The discussion will be streamed live on Facebook starting at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday and the film is available to watch online for free here until June 23. 1523

Color no one surprised: These days, even a new crayon name draws criticism.Crayola announced the name of a new blue crayon this week: "Bluetiful," which beat out four other names with 40% of the vote in an online naming contest launched in July.But critics say the name will teach children a nonword. (AP) — The parents of a mentally ill man fatally shot by an off-duty officer in a California Costco store remain hospitalized and their lawyer says neither is well enough to be interviewed by police.Attorney Dale Galipo tells the Los Angeles Times that Paola French was in a coma and in critical condition as of Wednesday. Her husband, Russell French, was in serious condition.Police in the city of Corona say detectives are continuing to interview witnesses and evaluate video and forensic evidence from the store.Thirty-two-year-old Kenneth French was shot and killed last week by an off-duty Los Angeles police officer. The officer says French attacked him without provocation. CNS note: EEOC identified store as located in La Mesa, but store is actually in San Carlos neighborhood of San Diego.SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Albertsons has agreed to pay 0,000 to settle a discrimination lawsuit alleging the manager of an Albertsons supermarket in the San Carlos neighborhood harassed employees for speaking Spanish on the job, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Tuesday.The EEOC's lawsuit alleged a store manager was allowed to harass employees at the Lake Murray Boulevard Albertsons in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on national origin.According to the complaint filed in San Diego federal court, employees were not allowed to speak Spanish even while on breaks, or when conversing with Spanish-speaking customers.In addition to the monetary damages, which the EEOC said will go to "a class of affected employees," Albertsons has agreed to review and possibly revise its discrimination policies and procedures and provide training to employees and managers, with an emphasis on language discrimination.Alberstons will also be required to submit reports to the EEOC and keep records demonstrating compliance with a consent decree settling the suit."The EEOC commends Albertsons for agreeing to meaningful and comprehensive measures to correct this situation," said Anna Park, regional attorney for the EEOC's Los Angeles District, whose jurisdiction includes San Diego County."It is important for employers to train employees and make clear that their use of language in the workplace should not impact one group over another."Christopher Green, director of the EEOC's San Diego office, said, "Given the nature of an increasingly diverse workforce, employers should be mindful that the imposition of restrictive language policies may not comply with federal law." 1864
