BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Along with more than 3,000 teachers and students, Premier Wen Jiabao attended the opening of a temporary middle school in southwest China's quake zone as the new semester started on Monday.     Beichuan Middle School was among the hardest-hit schools in the May 12 earthquake. Wen visited students and teachers at the school three times prior to the Monday event. Now we know one thing, and it's that as long as we choose to confront adversity with courage, we will surely overcome any disaster.     "As we hold this ceremony, we can never forget the students and teachers who died in the disaster ... I hope all of you at the school will win respect and pride with hard work and tough spirits. I believe you can do it." BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Communist Party of China (CPC) chief Hu Jintao has urged Party members to learn the theory on socialism with Chinese characteristics more conscientiously.     Hu, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remark at a seminar which was participated in Sunday afternoon by members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.     Prof. Yan Shuhan from the Party School of the CPC Central Committee and prof. Qin Xuan from the Renmin University of China delivered speeches at the seminar and put forward their views on applying the theory into practice.     Presiding over the seminar, Hu said the theory on socialism with Chinese characteristics is a fundamental guideline of the Party and government for social and economic construction.     Party members should understand the basic principles of the theory and use them in their practical work, he added.     Hu asked Party organs at all levels to make the theory accessible and understood by every Party member and draw long-term plans to promote and develop the theory.

BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- From anti-terrorism drills to halt of flights during the opening ceremony, Beijing is taking every possible measure to ward off terrorism and ensure security for next month's Olympic Games.     China Civil Aviation Administration announced on Tuesday a new move for Olympic security that no planes would be allowed to take off or land at Beijing Capital International Airport from 7 p.m. to midnight on Aug. 8, the night of the Games' opening ceremony. TIANJIN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged Tianjin Municipality in north China to step up opening and reform of its Binhai New Area.     Wen made the remark during his inspection tour in the coastal municipality on the sidelines of the 2008 Summer Davos Forum which was held here on Saturday and Sunday. In all, it is 2,270 square km and has a population of 1.4 million.     Lying between China's capital and the Bohai Gulf, the area has been decided by the State Council, or the Cabinet, to be one of the key economic powers in the country.     Taking an intercity high-speed railway shuttle from Beijing, the Premier asked the administrators of the shuttle line to provide a safe, fast and convenient service for people living in the two cities.     After arriving at the Binhai New Area, Premier Wen inspected some industry zones near the port. He was accompanied by Tianjin's Communist Party chief Zhang Gaoli.     Wen attended an opening ceremony for an assembly factory of the Airbus A320 model in the area.     "The Binhai New Area should take the advantages of various economic policies given by the central government and constantly improve its abilities of innovation and international competition," said the premier.     During his visit to the city, Wen also went to local households to convey his greetings of the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.     When visiting a supermarket in the old community of Tianjin, Premier Wen asked the supermarket to ensure the quality of the products on sale.     He also went to a children's hospital where many parents sent their babies to have medical examinations in lieu of the toxic milk scandal.     The premier urged doctors in the hospital to carefully examine every child and to set parent's hearts to rest.

HAIKOU, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Higos, the 17th tropical storm of the year, landed in China's southernmost Hainan Province Friday evening, local observatory said.     Higos landed at 10:15 p.m. in Longlou Town, Wenchang City, 19.6 degrees north latitude and 111.0 degrees east longitude. The wind speed at the eye of the storm was 18 meters per second, according to the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Observatory.     It was forecast to weaken and move northwest towards the coastal areas of western Guangdong Province. Delayed trucks are parked at the Xiuying port in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province Oct. 3, 2008, due to the suspension of ferry service.In total, 24,115 fishing boats in the province had returned to port and coastal fisheries staff had gone home. All recreational sporting activities on the air or sea were also suspended on Friday, said Lin Mingzhong, Hainan Provincial Office for Flood, Wind and Drought Control deputy director.     He predicted Higos would have minor impact on the island as the rainfall was expected to be around 100 mm. It was likely to affect some small reservoirs as their current water level was high.     Higos was formed on Tuesday in the Pacific Ocean, coming on the heels of tropical storms Jangmi and Hagupit, which combined had killed about 20 people in China.
