NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - A furnace door was not closed while the system was being operated at a South San Diego County crematorium Thursday, sending heavy smoke containing the ashes of human remains above the area.The problem was reported at 12:15 p.m. at the Cortez Family Crematorium at 100 W. 35th St in National City, near Interstate 5 and SR-54.National City Fire Captain Brian Krebs said the furnace was in use and the oven door was not shut, sending smoke out of the chimney and the open doors of the building.The building’s heat detectors activated the fire extinguishers, according to a funeral home employee. Firefighters said the extinguishers gave off a strong odor. There were human ashes in the smoke, Krebs confirmed. The plume moved east across National City Blvd. and Broadway toward the Best Buy and Walmart shopping center, according to a witness.Rick Hank, who identified himself as a crematorium operator and was working at the time of the incident, denied that human ashes were released. He told 10News it was impossible for the ashes to leave the system and said the system's maker would have to provide a detailed explanation as to why.The crematorium resumed operations Thursday afternoon.The San Diego Air Pollution Control District said there was no public health risk from the smoke. 1340

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — A Milwaukee man has been charged for the assault and kidnap of a woman who he met on the app 'Tagged.'According to the criminal complaint, the victim said she entered a vehicle with Davoncia Kelly McAfee near the intersection of 58th and Hampton on Nov. 13. While in the car, an unknown man appeared from the back seat, wrapped his arms around her face, put what felt like a handgun to the back of her neck and told her to come to the back seat where he placed a blindfold over her eyes.McAfee then drove the vehicle for approximately 15 more minutes before coming to a stop. He and the man in the backseat told the victim not to move or scream as they led her out of the vehicle and up a set of stairs into an apartment living room area.The victim was then assaulted by multiple male individuals in the home.She was later taken back to her vehicle while still wearing the blindfold and was told not to turn around when she was dropped off or they would "blow her head off."During the incident, the suspects took the victim's cellphone, sweatshirt, Wisconsin ID card, and paperwork from her employer.The victim later made a Facebook post using images from McAfee's Tagged account to identify him and turn him into the Milwaukee Police Department. Police conducted interviews with McAfee where he admitted to setting up dates on the internet for sex.Police also executed a search warrant at the apartment where the victim was taken. They found a magazine for a Smith and Wesson handgun with six unfired .40 caliber cartridges and an ammunition tray with more unfired cartridges inside the residence.McAfee faces charges for First Degree Sexual Assault (Forcibly Aiding & Abetting) - PTAC and As a Party to a Crime, Kidnapping (Carries Forcibly) - PTAC, As a Party to a Crime. NASA has tapped nine astronauts to become the first to launch to space from American soil since the Space Shuttle program was retired in 2011.The seven men and two women will also be the first astronauts to fly in capsules developed and built by the private sector as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program.Since 2011, the United States has relied on Russia to ferry astronauts to the space station. MOYOCK, N.C. – Three-year-old Vernon Smith is passionate about fire trucks and got a major surprise from dozens of first responders this weekend. Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department in North Carolina hosted a drive-by parade for the little boy who is about to have his third open heart surgery.Vernon’s dad, Blake Smith, wanted to put a smile on his son’s face, so he asked if the local fire truck could drive by. Word got around about Vernon’s story, and dozens of firefighters, police and others wanted to be part of the surprise.Other surrounding departments learned about the event and joined in: Moyock Volunteer Fire Department, the Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department, the South Camden Volunteer Fire Department, Currituck County Fire-EMS, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Department, the Camden County Sheriff’s Department, Pasquotank EMS, Lantz’s Towing, and North Carolina State Highway Patrol.One of the assistant chiefs for the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department, Keith Storf, said the support they got from the neighboring departments was just phenomenal.Vernon’s mom, Brittany Blackwelder, said when she was 21 weeks pregnant, they learned that Vernon had a heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. It is a rare disease that causes the left side of his heart to not work properly, which causes the right side to work double-time.Blackwelder said this will be his third reconstructive surgery, and said hopefully it will stabilize him. She said he can never play competitive sports and gets tired easily, but she said otherwise he should be able to live a normal life.Storf said the little boy has gone through more than most adults.
