(KGTV) - Sentencing will continue next week for the man convicted of killing his former business partner along with the man’s wife and two young sons. A San Bernardino County jury recommended the death penalty in June 2019 for Charles “Chase” Merritt. The recommendation came after Merritt was found guilty in the deaths of Joseph McStay, his wife Summer, and their two sons, Gianni and Joey Jr. A sentence was expected to be delivered Friday. The hearing will now resume on Tuesday.The family was last seen at a Fallbrook home in February 2010. Investigators had few leads in the case, at one point believing the McStays had crossed the border into Mexico voluntarily. Merritt alerted authorities to the disappearance and filed a missing persons report. During his trial, which started in January 2019, prosecutors said Merritt had been forging checks linked to the business he shared with Joseph McStay. During Friday's sentencing, Merritt tried to fire his attorney, Rajan Maline, after returning from the court's lunch break. The defense had spent the morning giving several motions about new cell phone evidence. The prosecution had yet to have the chance to argue against the motions before Merritt moved to fire Maline mid-trial. Hunter used campaign funds for personal expenses “to satisfy his desire for intimacy,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California David Leshner alleged in an evidence motion filed Monday. The court document details how and when Hunter spent thousands of dollars on relationships with five women who worked as congressional staffers or lobbyists, prosecutors said. “Carrying out all these affairs did not come cheap,” the U.S. Attorney’s office said. A woman, identified as Individual 14 [I-14] in the motion, started a relationship with Hunter in April 2009, four months after he became the Representative for the 50th District of California, according to the motion. The motion also alleges an instance when Hunter stayed at a Capitol Hill hotel with the female lobbyist on June 21, 2011, only to have his wife Margaret join him the following two nights. “In describing this expenditure to his campaign treasurer later, Hunter never explained the reason he kept the first night at a hotel,” the court document says. In August 2012, about five months after his alleged relationship with I-14 ended, documents indicate Hunter began a relationship with a congressional staffer, identified in court filings as I-15. Hunter began staying at the woman’s home “nearly every night,” using campaign funds for dinners and Uber rides to further the relationship, prosecutors said. RELATED: Rep. The U.S. Attorney’s office filed the evidence motion “to establish the personal nature of the expenditures” and “demonstrate Hunter’s knowledge and intent to break the law, and to establish his motive to embezzle from his campaign.” “Simply put, carrying out a sequence of romantic liaisons is so far removed from any legitimate campaign or congressional activity as to rebut any argument that Hunter believed these were proper uses of campaign funds,” according to the motion. A 9-year-old boy retrieved a gun from his parents' bedroom and shot his 13-year-old sister to death, authorities said, after the two got into an argument over a video game controller.The incident occurred over the weekend in rural Monroe County, Mississippi, as the children's mother was preparing lunch in the kitchen, the country sheriff said."He wanted the controller, and I guess he knew where to find the gun," Sheriff Cecil Cantrell told CNN.The boy grabbed a handgun, which was kept in a nightstand next to the bed, and shot the sister in the back of the head, the sheriff said."This is the first time I've ever dealt with any child that was shot like that," Cantrell said. (KGTV) - San Diego Police and Crime Stoppers requested the public’s help Thursday to find a man suspected of robbing an adult store in the Midway area. The man walked into the Adult Depot about 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 and pulled out a handgun, police said. He pointed the gun at the clerk’s head and demanded cash, then took money from the register. Police said the man fired one shot at the computer monitor above the cash register before running away. Investigators said the man was last seen walking north on Pacific Highway. The man is described as Hispanic and 5’4” to 5’6” tall. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, black bandana, black gloves, gray pants, and black and white tennis shoes.
