As coronavirus rates rise in most parts of the country, many testing centers are inundated with new patients. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the authorization of a brand new rapid COVID-19 test that people can take themselves at home."I think that it’s better to have a faster test than a slower one. People tend to abide by the public health recommendation to self-isolate if they have actual data in a reliable timeframe. The danger is that we’re asking people to do this at home. It's not in a controlled setting like a laboratory," says Dr. Amber Schmidtke, a public health microbiologist.Dr. Schmidtke says there are still questions about how this new rapid at-home test will be interpreted by health officials."I actually don't expect them to report it. I would be surprised. You know, most people don't report a home pregnancy test to our Department of Public Health, for example. But I think this is going to be treated much in the same way as a home pregnancy test. You know, if you call your doctor and say, 'I tested positive at home,' they're going to repeat that test as soon as you come in," says Dr. Schmidtke.The test, which a doctor will have to prescribe, will provide valuable information to people, as long as it is administered correctly."What if they don't do it very well? You have to put it in your nose and rub it around both nares. You have to put it in, swirl it around 15 times. You have to let it sit there for 30 seconds. You have to know which button to read. There's lots of things that can go wrong and so if the test is misunderstood and you don't have a professional looking over your shoulder, it could result in some unfortunate things," says Dr. Stuart Ray, a professor at Johns Hopkins University and infectious disease expert.Dr. Ray hopes people will use the test correctly so that it really does help prevent COVID-19 transmission in the community."What if they use that to decide that they're now negative after exposure so therefore it's safe to go out before their isolation or quarantine ends. And the problem is, they're still in the incubation period so the test is negative but in fact they’re infected," says Dr. Ray.Dr. Ray says it will take time to understand how the test works, but it's exciting to have a new tool for the general public to use. 2340

He is accused of shooting and killing two people at a Kenosha protest, the third night in-a-row of unrest in the town. A third person was injured in the shooting and taken to the hospital.The Village of Antioch Police Department said the teen was arrested Wednesday morning.The teen will be charged with first-degree intentional homicide and is waiting for extradition to Wisconsin.The shooting happened just before midnight in an area where police said demonstrations were happening.Police fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse protesters during a third night of unrest in Wisconsin following the shooting of a Jacob Blake, who is now paralyzed.Attorney Ben Crump spoke Tuesday alongside family members of Blake. He said it would “take a miracle” for Blake to walk again.“I am asking everyone, take a moment and examine your heart. Citizens, police officers, firemen, clergy, politicians. Do Jacob justice on this level, and examine your hearts. An explosion rocked a United Parcel Service freight facility in Kentucky on Wednesday morning, injuring at least two people, but authorities say they doubt that the blast stemmed from a terror attack. Instead, it appears to be accidental, they said.The incident took place in Lexington. UPS spokesman Glenn Zaccara told CNN that 12 employees were at the site. Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.In a message on Twitter, the Lexington Fire Department said, "Nothing leads us to believe this is anything other than an accidental explosion."Fire officials also tweeted that six people were taken to the hospital for observation.Initial reports indicate the cause may have been a leak from materials contained in a trailer, Zaccara said.Lt. Jessica Bowman, the fire department's public information officer, said the building is used for truck and trailer maintenance and that there are other UPS buildings in the area that are still in use."There was significant damage to the building. A large area of the roof was blown out and interior walls were knocked down, as well as exterior damage. There's pieces of the roof and insulation on the ground," Bowman said. "There is no life hazard. Crews are on the scene stabilizing the building."UPS is working with local authorities and won't provide additional details while there is an ongoing investigation, officials said.An FBI statement obtained by CNN Law Enforcement Analyst Josh Campbell said the agency "is aware of the incident and is working with our local and state partners to assist as needed. As disinfecting wipes and sprays fly off store shelves, companies are looking for new ways to keep surfaces coronavirus-free. Some are looking at repurposing UV light technology, a cleaning solution that’s been used for decades.Ava Robotics and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology partnered on a project to create a robot that uses UV-C light to disinfect large areas.“It was about a 4,000 square foot space. It was able to disinfect that in less than 30 minutes,” said Youssef Saleh with Ava Robotics.The purpose -- cleaning large, busy spaces of virus and bacteria, specifically coronavirus.“UV is not new. Robots are not new themselves,” Saleh said.“It's actually been in practice in hospitals for probably four decades plus,” said Dr. Eric Hill, the Chair of Emergency Services at Medical Center of Aurora. It’s usually used to sterilize rooms.“Anything that the light hits, it can kill. So it has to be in direct contact with the light beam and it has to be in contact for a certain period of time,” Hill said.“There are three factors of effectiveness of UV light, the first is the power itself,” Saleh explained. “Then there's the distance to the object that you're trying to disinfect, and then there is the amount of time.”"We cannot see it, it's the same kind of UV radiation you’d get from the sun,” Hill said. “It works by destroying the DNA and the RNA of the organism. And it doesn't affect just viruses, it affects bacteria, viruses, mold, and spores.”While it can kill germs, it can also do damage to us. UV light plays a role in diseases like skin cancer. “It is dangerous for humans to be in direct contact with it,” Dr. Hill said.That’s why the project with Ava Robotics and MIT also factors in safety for humans.“Safety elements have to be part of the solution, thought through, and understood,” Saleh said. The team is working on making the robot more adaptable to changing spaces, like warehouses, and potentially other large spaces like grocery stores and schoolsBut Hill says UV light isn’t a complete replacement for traditional cleaning methods.“It does not take the place of things like wiping something down,” he said. “But after you do that...adding in a UV light system can really hit in a broad area...and get all the microorganisms that were in there.”Hill also warns consumers that are interested in this to look at products closely.“Several hundred dollars is realistic for a good UV light system,” he explained. “We have seen much more of a demand of it, if you go on Amazon the amount of UV light products I’ve seen pushed out is incredible.” 2591
