SAN DIEGO — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A life science development firm has unveiled plans to transform eight acres along San Diego's waterfront into a mixed-use hub that could attract numerous leading edge companies to the city.Development firm IQHQ announced Monday that it closed on the site along Harbor Drive and will break ground on the project's first phase this week. The firm says it has entitlements and key permits for new office, lab and support retail space for the complex, called the San Diego Research and Development District, or RaDD. In a news release, the firm said this would be the largest urban commercial waterfront site along the Pacific Coast. The development is sure to bolster an already vibrant life sciences industry in San Diego, with biotechs clustered mostly in the Torrey Pines area. This could attract more to relocate downtown. The project would be the third major commercial development in downtown, along with the Padres plan to build office space at Tailgate Park, and the redevelopment of Horton Plaza into a tech hub."This is probably, in terms of the commercial sector, the most important pivotal moment in San Diego's modern redevelopment history," said Gary London, of commercial real estate consulting firm London Moeder Advisors.IQHQ chief executive Stephen Rosetta told ABC-10News this was the premier site to build on the west coast, if not the entire USA. "This project is really special to us because we're headquartered here in San Diego, and the partners live locally and have for most of our lives," he siad. SAN DIEGO (CNS and KGTV) - The San Diego Humane Society announced Thursday that its Humane Law Enforcement division conducted a one-day sweep of pet stores and issued more than 100 citations for violations of a partial state ban on the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits.Assembly Bill 485, which went into effect at the beginning of this year, requires pet stores to get their animals from a partnered shelter or rescue center in an effort to curb the sale of pets from so-called puppy mills and kitten factories that breed animals for sale en masse, often in inhumane conditions.Humane Law Enforcement officers issued 39 citations to Broadway Puppies and 38 to Bark Avenue, both located in Escondido, for failing to provide a documented agreement with a public or private animal shelter or rescue organization, according to Humane Society spokeswoman Dariel Walker. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A firefighter suffered a minor hand injury Thursday morning while working to extinguish a fire that damaged a North Park business, authorities said.The blaze was reported around 5:30 a.m. at a single-story business on El Cajon Boulevard near Illinois Street, just west of Interstate 805, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Crews responded to the scene and found smoke and flames coming from the roof of the building, the agency reported. No one was inside the building at the time and firefighters knocked down the flames within about 20 minutes.One firefighter was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment of a minor hand injury.The cause of the blaze was under investigation. 724
