Every year, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) get together to update what they call the "Doomsday Clock." It's designed to warn the public about how close the world is to destroying itself with dangerous technologies of its own making. It is a metaphor, a reminder of the perils leaders must address if we are to survive on the planet. It was created in 1947. At that point, the greatest danger to humanity came from nuclear weapons — in particular, the United States's and the Soviet Union's nuclear arms race. The BAS considered possible catastrophic disruptions from climate change in its hand-setting deliberations for the first time in 2007.The closer to 'midnight' on the clock, the closer the world is to an apocolypseThe Bulletin's Science and Security Board meets twice a year to discuss world events and reset the clock as necessary. The board is made up of scientists and other experts with deep knowledge of nuclear technology and climate science, who often provide expert advice to governments and international agencies. They consult widely with their colleagues across a range of disciplines and also seek the views of the Bulletin's 1169

Dog's aren't just our best friends, they're also good for our health, new research suggests.A study published Friday in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings says that owning a pet, especially a dog, may help maintain a healthy heart -- in case you needed any more reason to head to your local animal shelter. The study began in 2013 and 2014, when researchers gathered health and socioeconomic information on over 2,000 people in Brno, Czech Republic, and scheduled follow-up evaluations for every five years until 2030.The latest was this year, in 2019, when researchers again looked at about 2,000 people with no history of heart disease. They scored the participants on the American Heart Association's list of seven ideal health behaviors and factors, also known as "Life's Simple 7": body mass index, diet, physical activity, smoking status, blood pressure, blood glucose and total cholesterol. The researchers compared the cardiovascular health scores of pet owners with those of petless people. In general, people who owned a pet were more physically active than those who did not, with healthier diets and blood sugar levels. But then they compared dog owners with everyone else and found that no matter their age, sex or education level, they benefited the most in terms of cardiovascular health.Take that, cat people. The findings are consistent with research that has shown that dog ownership leads to more physical activity. Meanwhile, pet ownership in general reduces stress, betters our self-esteem and makes us more social.Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, one of the lead researchers on the team, said what makes this study so significant is that it showed the benefits of having a dog go beyond just increased physical activity. The study included many factors that determined the health of the heart and arteries, like showing that dog-owners tend to also have a healthier diet than other pet-owners -- thus contributing to a better cardiovascular health. It's "putting everything together and not just focused on a single factor," he told CNN.But he also pointed out that the results may be skewed, simply because so many people own dogs. Of the 42 percent of subjects that owned any type of pet, 24 percent were owned dogs. 2240

DENVER, Colo. – Buying a Christmas tree can represent the start of the holiday season. But trees can be expensive. If you want it to last until the big day, there are simple steps to take when buying the perfect tree.Doug Brown is the owner of Reindeer Ranch in Denver, Colorado. He’s been selling Christmas trees since 1997. So, he knows a thing or two about what type of Christmas tree lasts the longest.Brown says, "the noble firs and the Fraser firs tend to be the Cadillacs of trees. Those are going to be the ones that give you the best look and the most longevity."When picking a tree on the lot, Brown suggests doing the touch and smell test. If no needles fall off and it smells like pine, it’s a healthy tree.As for the price of the tree, this year you might be paying a little extra.Brown says, “we are in a tree shortage right now." That means the demand outweighs the supply. Before you leave the lot, make sure you get a fresh cut on the bottom of your tree. That way it soaks up all the water when you bring it home.Once your home Brown says, "get it into your stand and put water in it right away no longer than 6 to 8 hours."Make sure to check the water daily. A tree drinks about a gallon of water a day. Also, never place your tree next to a vent, fireplace or window because that will dry out the tree. There’s also no need to put fertilizer or Miracle Grow in the water.Brown says, if you follow these simple tips, you and your loved ones will be enjoying your perfect tree the entire holiday season.Brown is not only selling trees this year. He is also holding a toy drive too. On Saturday, December 14, they will be giving away 200 toys to families in need. The toy drive starts at 10 a.m. 1723

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says he's investigating ways he can financially support team and employees and arena workers who won't be able to work due to the NBA's suspended season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Cuban did not provide specifics about his plan, but he said during a press conference on Wednesday that he has "already started the process of having a program in place" to pay workers whose income depends on NBA games."It's stunning, but we are where we are," Cuban said, according to 512

Congress returns Monday from a month-long recess struggling to resolve the difficult politics of gun control while trying to avoid yet another government shutdown in the Trump era. There are signs that September could be a fruitful month leading to bipartisan deals to keep the government running and continued conversations to change the country's gun laws following a summer marked by gun violence and many calling on Congress to act. But there are also indications that the coming weeks could devolve into a messy, partisan affair that leaves Congress no closer to attempting to stop the spate of mass shootings consuming the country.A big reason for that question: President Donald Trump has left lawmakers in the dark about what exactly he would accept when it comes to gun legislation."I think there's a window of opportunity for the President to lead and to endorse a package of reforms," said Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware, who has engaged in bipartisan talks over the past month over gun legislation. "I'm torn between hope and skepticism."Behind the scenes, Senate Democrats and Republicans have engaged in a series of talks with senior White House staff about a package of gun reforms that could form the basis of legislation. But the White House has yet to formally propose a legislative package because Trump has yet to indicate his preference, according to lawmakers and aides in both parties.Republican sources told CNN that they need Trump to throw his support behind more expansive background checks in order for GOP senators to get behind such legislation. A big reason why: 29 GOP senators who still serve in the Senate voted in 2013 against legislation drafted by Sens. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, and Pat Toomey, a Pennsylvania Republican, to expand background checks on commercial sales. And in order for GOP senators to change their position now, they'd need cover from Trump to take the heat from their base and the National Rifle Association. As part of the Democrats' continued push to keep the pressure on the President to take up gun legislation, Senate Minority Leader Schumer and House Speaker Pelosi sent a 2169
