A Minnesota school security guard admitted to authorities on Wednesday that he lied about an active shooting after he accidently shot himself, St. Paul, Minnesota police said in a statement The department reported that Brent Patrick Ahlers, 25, was arrested for filing a false police report. St. Paul Police said that Ahlers told investigators that he was handling his gun when it accidently discharged, sending a bullet through his shoulder. He originally claimed that while working a guard shift at St. Catherine University that he was shot in the woods by a suspect. St. Paul Police said that the incident tied down vast resources, including 55 officers, four canines and a Minnesota State Patrol aircraft. “Last night I was talking to you about an incident that shocked the community,” Sgt. A swimmer died following an apparent shark attack near Bailey Island, Maine, on Monday, the Maine Department of Natural Resources confirmed.The agency said that kayakers brought the unidentified woman to shore after swimmers saw she was injured from an apparent shark attack. She was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS responders.Swimmers and boaters in the area were being told to remain cautious following the attack.The University of Florida, which has a database of shark attacks in the United States, has not reported any such attacks from 2010 through 2019 off the coast of Maine. A Maryland police officer has been arrested and charged with rape after allegedly assaulting a woman during a traffic stop.Ryan Macklin, a six-year veteran of the Prince George's County Police Department, was taken into custody Monday evening, according to a news release from the department.He has been suspended without pay, the department said, and has been charged with first-degree rape, second-degree rape, perverted practice, second-degree assault and fourth-degree sex offense.Police said Macklin pulled the woman over at about 1 a.m. on Thursday. During the stop, police said, Macklin forced the woman "to perform a sexual act" while they were both in the woman's car in a parking lot. Police said Macklin was on duty, in uniform and driving a marked police cruiser at the time.Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said at a news conference that the woman came forward "several hours" after the incident with the encouragement of friends. Police said they do not know why Macklin allegedly targeted the driver."The charges against this officer are highly troubling," Stawinski said. "Officers take an oath to protect others, not to abuse their authority in order to victimize someone. Those who live and work in Prince George's County deserve the very best from the men and women of this department."Stawinski said police have information that suggests "there may be additional people impacted by this officer's conduct." Karen Bass, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, which is leading the effort, said called it “transformative.”“We’re in a real moment in our country,” she said Sunday on CNN, speaking after days of massive protests set off by the death of George Floyd and other African Americans involving the police.Bass said the package from House and Senate Democrats will be bolder than any law enforcement changes of the past decade. “It is time for police culture in many departments to change,” she said. “And we believe that the legislation will make a major step forward in that direction.”The package confronts several aspects of law enforcement accountability and practices that have come under criticism, especially as more and more police violence is captured on cell phone video and shared widely across the nation, and the world.The draft document said the proposed legislation would revise the federal criminal police misconduct statute to make it easier to prosecute officers who are involved in misconduct “knowingly or with reckless disregard.”The package would also change “qualified immunity” protections for police “to enable individuals to recover damages when law enforcement officers violate their constitutional rights,” it says.The legislation seeks to provide greater oversight and transparency of police behavior in several ways.
