San Diego's affordable housing crisis has been getting more dire over the last five years because there's a lack of resources, a new report from the California Housing Partnership says. The report, released Wednesday, says the county needs 143,800 more affordable rental homes to meet current demand. However, there's less money and resources going to them. The average rent in the county is now up to ,992, and about the city's lowest income renters are spending 70 percent of their money on housing. Stephen Russell, who heads the San Diego Housing Federation, said the region took a hit in 2012, when the state eliminated redevelopment funds - 20 percent of which were reserved for affordable housing. Now, as cost of living rises, there are nearly 10,000 homeless San Diegans, thousands of them sleeping on the streets.Bruce Carron, 72, was one of them, until he got into Talmadge Gateway, a new 60-unit complex for low-income seniors with ongoing medical needs."It's just more than what I thought I deserved, but somewhere along the line God wanted me to win somewhere in this crazy life that we have," Carron said. The city will soon decide whether to place a property tax bond on the November ballot to pay for more affordable housing. It would charge for every 0,000 of assessed value, and pay for 7,500 new homes. "Until we solve the problem of people sleeping on our streets, I don't think I can sleep in my bed with a good conscience," Russell said. The San Diego Taxpayers Association doesn't have a position on the potential measure, but in a statement chief execrative Haney Hong said more research was needed."Before we decide to throw more money at the problem, let's understand what we're getting right now and how our public agencies are performing," he said. The city rules committee will consider the bond for the ballot next month.  1924

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - With car horns blaring, cellphone video captured a fight breaking out at a busy intersection in San Diego near Montgomery High School. The incident played out at Palm Avenue and Beyer Way - just feet from the high school - as school let out Friday afternoon. In the crosswalk, there was a flurry off punches. A teen in a hoodie is recorded battering another student on the ground. Some other teens joins the fray and more punches are traded."It's stupid. Why have a fight so dramatic like that? It could cause a car accident," a student told 10News. We are not naming the student at the request of their family. The student doesn't know what sparked the fight, but says those involved were juniors. The student told 10News this was the third big fight on campus this year. "Just make us look bad. Students should set a good example for our school," the student said. There were no accidents, but some of those drivers did get out of their cars. A witness tells us some tried to stop the fight. In the now-viral video, a crowd of people spill across the crosswalk. The melee lasted more than 20 minutes before it broke up. Police arrived but did not make any arrests.Janet Paz, a mother of two students at the school, says it sends a bad message."Makes me feel worried that kids aren't safe in school," said Paz.A spokesperson with the Sweetwater Union High School District says they believe they've identified the three-to-five students involved and are mulling possible discipline. Part of the investigation will include determining the cause of the fight and addressing any campus-wide issues. 1628

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A lot of people will do just about anything to avoid the dentist.Needles, drilling, and pain can cause all kinds of anxiety, but a local dentist is using a new laser that he says could transform dentistry.Sara Scarafone 15, is a patient at Dr. Alex Corondoni’s office in San Carlos. “Put the sunglasses on you, and we'll get started,” Corondoni said. But instead of a drill, Corondoni is using a laser. “It's hitting that tooth at 1800 pulses a second. It's almost like if you were jack hammering something,” he said. It's called Solea.  The laser vaporizes the enamel, allowing dentists to fill cavities painlessly. Corondoni has been practicing for 28 years and says it's unlike anything he's ever seen.“I've done some big, big, big fillings, that I was like, ‘You're not feeling this?!’” And no drilling means no Novocain. “I was excited to hear that there wasn't any needles involved,” Scarafone said.“My average patients are in their 60s and 70s, so I have a lot of medications, so if they have arrhythmias or heart problems, I'm not having to give them any anesthetic. It's huge,” Corondoni said. He says this new procedure turns what normally takes an hour into less than 10 minutes. “It just felt like a lot of air, and a little bit of water,” Scarafone said. The device is made by Boston-based Convergent Delta and claims to be revolutionary-- reducing recovery time.“You're not numb. You can go to work. There's no excuses,” Corondoni said. “I can do all the different parts of the mouth at one time.”Even normally complex procedures on soft tissue like gums become more routine. “I would have had to cut it, suture it, wait a couple weeks, and now it's just done and they come back in 4 or 5 days and it's healed. It's amazing!”A nearby touch screen lets dentists adjust the speed and precision of the laser. Ultimately, Corondoni says it's not just improving his patient's experiences, but his practice and reputation.“Sometimes, I'd have to sedate patients to have them come in here, just to get a needle.” Now, he no longer feels like the enemy. “I'm a good guy now. I'm a good guy.”To find a dentist that uses this technology click here.  2200

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- When asked if his success is surreal, comedian Jo Koy said: "I earned it."Jo Koy, whose real name is Joseph Herbert, knew he wanted to be a comedian since the age of 11. He has been in the comedy scene since the late 1980s and said he "kept grinding." That hard work paid off as Koy is now getting ready to film his third Netflix special and performs to sold-out audiences across the country. Family has been a central theme in his routine, often talking about raising his teenage son and growing up with his Filipino mom. His son, now 16, is getting involved in helping dad refine his show. "He's an associate producer on [the Netflix special] 'Comin' in Hot.' He came up with my last joke... he's the one that told me to wear what I was wearing. That outfit, he picked it out," Koy said.Koy tells 10News his mom loves the attention, "My mom always wants more!" Koy said. When asked if there was enough diversity and inclusion in comedy, the half-Filipino artist he feels like the doors are now, "open and there's a lot more opportunity, but we still have a long way to go." He's not going to get much time to check out the sights in San Diego. He's focusing on work and putting on great shows at the Civic Theater this week. "I stay working, man! I'll stop working when I die! I'm always going to do stand-up," Koy said. "This is my passion. I'll be 80 and I'll be on stage... this is what I was born to do." (Click on the video above to watch the full interview with 10News.)Koy will be performing at the San Diego Civic Theatre from Sept. 25 through Sept. 29. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -San Diego is expecting the most powerful Santa Ana winds of the season this week. The winds are expected to pick up late Tuesday into Thursday. Cal Fire is urging residents not to let their guard down, but cautions, this is not the time to start clearing defensible space. "This week we really want people to tap the brakes on going out and clearing their property, we don't want them to start the next fire trying to do the right thing, the wrong way, at the wrong time, so please don't clear your property this week, focus on having an evacuation plan so you can get your family members, pets and livestock out when the need arises," said Captain Thomas Shoots, Public Information Officer for Cal Fire San Diego.RELATED: Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsFirefighters from San Diego, Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, and Cal Fire are helping to fight the fires in Sonoma County and the Getty Fire in Los Angeles. Still, Shoots said there is no strain on local resources. "We know that a lot of times, this time of year, we'll have multiple major events happen at the same time, so we can send out plenty of resources and still be staffed up in San Diego so we are watching that very closely and we want to make sure that if anything takes off here we have plenty of resources to draw from," said Captain Shoots. Crews are able to monitor all the fire activity across the state from the command center at the Cal Fire Headquarters in Rancho San Diego. "Regionally, we're looking pretty good, we're fortunate that both fires that we had on Friday we were able to jump on it, put a ton of resources on it, and we were able to stop those before they became major incidents," said Captain Shoots. According to Shoots, this has been a mild fire season compared to last year. "We continue to see fires this year, but most people haven't heard about a lot of the fires that we've had because we've been able to keep them small. With Cal Fire, our goal is to keep 95% of the fires at 10 acres or less, and we've been fortunate with that this year because the conditions have been milder," said Shoots. Right now, Cal Fire crews are working seven-day shifts, instead of the standard three."We've been pretty lucky with the fire activity around the state has been pretty light. Most other years, we've been hit pretty hard, and we start to get worn down this time of year, but 2019 has been relatively good to us. Our guys are pretty fresh, and they're ready to do their job." 2507
