Trump orders rapid withdrawal from Syria in apparent reversal19 DEC 18 10:23 ETBy Barbara Starr and Ryan Browne, CNN    (CNN) -- Planning is underway for a "full" and "rapid" withdrawal of US troops from Syria, a US defense official told CNN Wednesday.The decision, which would be a reversal from previously stated US policy, was made by President Donald Trump, who has long signaled his desire to get out of Syria, the official added.On Wednesday morning, the President tweeted, "we have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency."Even though the US will continue to maintain troops in Iraq with the capability of launching strikes into Syria, a US withdrawal of ground forces would fulfill a major goal of Syria, Iran and Russia and risks diminishing US influence in the region.The US has about 2,000 troops on the ground in the country, where they are primarily training local forces to combat ISIS. The US-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces have had some recent success against the terror group and are on the cusp of capturing the last major town held by ISIS east of the Euphrates.Estimates vary as to how many ISIS fighters are left in Syria. In the town of Hajin, the terror group's last redoubt, the coalition estimated some 2,000 ISIS fighters were present. But a Defense Department inspector general report put the number of ISIS members in Syria and Iraq as high as 30,000.The US has forces in Iraq ready to launch attacks in Syria if necessary. In the last few weeks, the US-led coalition fighting ISIS has carried out hundreds of air and artillery strikes targeting ISIS in Syria. Some of those strikes were launched from neighboring Iraq, where the US has over 5,000 troops. Hundreds of US troops have also been training local forces at At Tanf in southern Syria, where Russia-backed pro-regime forces are seeking to oust the US presence.Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning told CNN that, "at this time, we continue to work by, with and through our partners in the region."The US-led coalition recently denied any change to the US presence in Syria."Any reports indicating a change in the US position with respect" to the US military presence in Syria "is false and designed to sow confusion and chaos," the coalition said in a statement earlier this month.Gen. Travis Air Force Base in California said a false alarm led to a lockdown on the base Wednesday.According to a Facebook post from the base, there were reports of gunfire on the base late Wednesday morning. The paraplegic head football coach for Independence High School is claiming he was forced to "scoot down the aisle [of a plane] on his butt" and off the plane after United Airlines denied him an aisle chair on multiple flights.Tyler Schilhabel was injured in an ATV accident years ago and is disabled from the waist down. According to Schilhabel, he and his wife Courtney were traveling via United Airlines to the Dominican Republic for their honeymoon. Schilhabel says he booked his flights through Costco's travel program, and was scheduled to travel from Los Angeles to the Dominican Republic with a connecting flight in Chicago. The Schilhabel's were also scheduled for the same route coming home. According to Schilhabel, when they landed, the plane did not have an aisle chair to transport him off the plane. Schilhabel says his wheelchair is too big to fit down the aisle of a plane. Schilhabel says United Airlines also did not have a ramp or elevator to help him off the plane and only had stairs. According to Schilhabel, he had to scoot down the aisle "on his butt" and then had to hop down "step by step" to get to his wheelchair. Then on the Schilhabel's connecting flight in Chicago after the honeymoon, United Airlines also did not have an aisle chair. This time, Schilhabel says he and his wife had seats in the back of the plane. Schilhabel says he had to "scoot all the way down on my butt." On one of the flights, one of the flight attendants picked Shilhabel up and carried him down the aisle so he could catch his connecting flight. When 23ABC spoke to Schilhabel, he called the whole experience "humiliating."Schilhabel says on his last six flights with United Airlines, they were either "late with getting an aisle chair" or did not have an aisle chair. He also claims this has happened to his friends as well, some of whom are disabled veterans.According to the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), it is illegal for airlines to discriminate against passengers because of their disability. There have been thousands of aftershocks after two strong earthquakes hit northeast of Los Angeles. Communities are shaken after the two earthquakes—measuring at 6.4 and 7.1 magnitudes--hit in less than two days. The July 5 earthquake was the strongest in Southern California in 20 years. Many people living in Trona, California say they don't want to stick around to see the next one. “I know this is God's work and all, but it’s traumatizing,” says Dorothea Mith. Smith says she no longer feels safe living in this section of Southern California, and she plans on moving. “All this is broken apart,” Smith says, as she looks at the damage to her home. “It fell. My glasses started falling and I just couldn't move.” Smith says all she was thinking about during the earthquakes was about staying alive. “I just don't feel safe her anymore,” she says. “The wall is breaking, and I once loved this house.
