HARLEM, Manhattan — A 100-year-old woman in Harlem is serious about filling out the census. Heading to the streets with a bullhorn this week to celebrate her birthday, Katherine Nelms Nichson bellowed to her neighborhood to fill out the census.“Be counted in the census," she said at the corner of Lenox Avenue and 135th Street. "Come up off your butt."The deadline is weeks away. Officials around the country are worried the shortened timeline, impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak this year, will mean fewer responses than normal. Senator Brian Benjamin of Harlem said it’s not just on Nichson's birthday, but every day she's a political powerhouse.Julie Menin, the director of NYC Census 2020, said Nichson’s message is especially critical right now because New York City is facing an economic crisis.As of Friday, New York City had a response rate of 59.3 percent compared to the nationwide rate of 65.7 percent.The census is a survey required by the U.S. Constitution. It takes just 10 minutes to fill out and can be done online.Why is it so important? Its results are used to determine how much money municipalities gets from Washington for everything from housing to hospitals, roads, bridges, and schools. High school graduates who didn’t complete a federal financial aid application missed their opportunity for part of .6 billion in free money for college, according to NerdWallet’s annual analysis of federal financial aid data.The money went unclaimed by 661,000 members of the Class of 2018 who were eligible for a federal Pell Grant but didn’t complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. The application is key to getting money for college including work-study, federal loans and aid from states and schools.The average Pell Grant was ,908 for the 2018-19 school year, NerdWallet found. Gina Haspel was confirmed Thursday to be the first female director of the CIA with the help of votes from a half-dozen Senate Democrats.Haspel was confirmed in a 54-45 vote, the culmination of a roller-coaster nomination that appeared to be in danger at several points after she was abruptly selected by President Donald Trump in March.Three Republicans opposed Haspel's nomination: Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Jeff Flake of Arizona and John McCain of Arizona, although McCain did not vote because he's battling brain cancer at home.But Haspel secured enough votes to win confirmation with the backing of six Democrats, including Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee.Most of the Democratic votes in favor of Haspel came from senators who are up for re-election in November in states that Trump won in 2016, including Sens. And they expressed frustration that the CIA -- and Haspel herself -- refused to make public a full accounting of her CIA career and her role in the interrogation program.They argued that the CIA selectively released details publicly about Haspel's career -- like the 2011 internal CIA report that cleared her of wrongdoing in the tapes' destruction -- in order to bolster her nomination.The CIA did make classified materials about Haspel's record available to senators. Grocery chain Kroger announced Tuesday that is plans to hire 1,000 people to administer coronavirus vaccines at the chain’s 2,200 pharmacies and 220 clinics.Kroger’s vaccine program launches this week in the state of Alaska as health care workers in Anchorage and Juneau will be vaccinated by Kroger staff. Kroger says that it is working with state and federal officials to vaccinate others in prioritized populations, such as health care workers, and those living and working in assisted living facilities.Kroger is not the only major company to assist in administering vaccines. CVS and Walgreens began administering vaccines to those living and working in assisted living facilities this week.“Kroger Health is a COVID-19 response leader that has provided our patients, associates and other businesses with diagnostic testing tools and supporting resources since the onset of this public health crisis,” said Colleen Lindholz, Kroger Health’s president. “Kroger Health’s experienced health care providers remain committed to helping our patients and associates live healthier lives. Hillsborough County, Florida deputies arrested a Chase Bank call center employee for stealing account information, adding her boyfriend to the accounts and making withdrawals.31-year-old Dakima Williams and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Darius Lopez, are being charged with the crimes.“I went to pick up a prescription and when I went to pay for it with my HSA card it said I had a balance of like ,” Kari Krause, whose joint HSA account with her husband was compromised, said.Krause, who lives in Texas, says investigators told her the suspect had a duplicate debit card created to make the transactions. Lopez made two trips to a Chase Bank in Tampa to pull money from the account, withdrawing ,000 and the ,000.Chase reimbursed the couple and began investigating the incident. In total, deputies say nine accounts were compromised.“As soon as we discovered this, we notified authorities and worked with them on the investigation. The employee was terminated and we reimbursed affected customers. We also put additional safeguards in place to prevent this type of behavior by restricting access to certain account information and adding extra layers of verification,” Chase Spokesperson Michael Fusco said in an email.Chase also sold their Health Savings Account Business prior to the incident.
