OPEC is losing one of its members.The small, gas-rich state of Qatar said Monday that it will leave the oil cartel on January 1 after nearly 60 years of membership. The country's state oil company, Qatar Petroleum, made the announcement in a series of tweets."The withdrawal decision reflects Qatar's desire to focus its efforts on plans to develop and increase its natural gas production," Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the country's minister of state for energy affairs, was cited as saying in one of the tweets.Qatar is the world's leading exporter of liquefied natural gas, accounting for about 30% of global demand.For a year and a half, Qatar has been under an economic embargo by some of its neighbors including OPEC's de facto leader, Saudi Arabia. In response, Qatar increased its gas production, the mainstay of its economy, last year.It will be the first Middle Eastern country to pull out of OPEC, which only deals with crude oil production. Qatar's contribution has been marginal compared to some of the cartel's biggest producers like Saudi Arabia and Iraq. It pumps about 600,000 barrels a day of the almost 25 million barrels a day from all OPEC members."Qatar is a fairly small producer ... it was not making very much so it's not that significant in itself," said Robin Mills, CEO of Qamar Energy, a consultancy firm based in Dubai. "But it's a disappointment for OPEC because they've been trying to attract members."OPEC has been expanding in Africa, with Congo and Equatorial Guinea joining recently. "If you add those up, [the production] is equal to Qatar's so it's kind of lost the equivalent [output] of those new members," Mills added.OPEC members collectively supply about 44% of the world's crude oil. (KGTV) — The pandemic is creating a serious budget crunch for the volunteer non-profit organizations that provide key funding and support city libraries across San Diego County.Gail Wells of the Friends of Oceanside Library says fundraising efforts have almost completely dried up. “We make ,000 a year on book sales. And we make ,000 on Farmer’s Market sales. We’ve lost that. We can’t have any book sales," says Wells.Other fundraisers have had to be canceled, as well. Wells says they have tried to get creative, including selling used books on Amazon and offering drive-through boxed book sales, where for , people can buy a box of books in a particular genre without knowing precisely what books they will receive. “A lot of people will say I don’t need a box of books. And we’ll say all you need to to get one book you like and it pays for your box of books. Sometimes it works," Wells said.The fundraising woes come at the worst possible time for Friends of the Oceanside Public Library because they are about to lose their office/sorting room. That’s because the city is tearing down the building to make way for a new fire station. Currently in the majority of MLB stadiums, the netting provides protection for field-level seats behind home plate, exposing fans who sit behind the dugouts. Although a number of minor league stadiums have upgraded netting, the majority of MLB stadiums have not followed suit. The young girl struck by a foul ball on Wednesday was sitting behind the third base dugout. After Wednesday's incident, some players are left wondering, "What will it take" to expand netting. "I don't care about the damn view of a fan or what,'' Twins second baseman Brian Dozier told reporters after the game. "It's all about safety. I still have a knot in my stomach."MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said on Thursday that the league would once again discuss expanding netting. "The events at yesterday's game involving a young girl were extremely upsetting for everyone in our game," Manfred told ESPN's Bob Ley. "Over the past few seasons MLB has worked with our clubs to expand the amount of netting in our ballparks. Officials broke ground on a new national memorial in Washington, D.C. Thursday to honor the millions of Americans who served in World War I, 100 years after the United States got involved in the conflict.The memorial will be built in Pershing Park, a small plaza about a block away from the White House.More than 100,000 Americans died in the war and more than 200,000 others were injured. Now, nearly 100 later, there are no living survivors from World War I."It's a national tragedy that the millions of veterans of the Great War have not been memorialized in our capitol,” said Terry Hamby, commissioner of the United States World War I Centennial Commission."There was so much sacrifice in World War I, it's time for America to build a memorial to the forgotten war." Hamby’s grandfather fought in the war. Opioids take about 2.5 months off our lives, according to a new analysis published in the medical journal JAMA.In 2015, American life expectancy dropped for the first time since 1993. Public health officials have hypothesized that opioids reduced life expectancy for non-Hispanic white people in the United States from 2000 to 2014. Researchers have now quantified how much opioids are shortening US life spans.The researchers noted that the number of opioid overdose deaths are probably underestimated because of gaps in how death certificates are completed.From 2000 to 2015, death rates due to heart disease, diabetes and other key causes declined, adding 2.25 years to US life expectancy. But increases in deaths from Alzheimer's disease, suicide and other causes offset some of those gains. On average, Americans can now expect to live 78.8 years, according to data from 2015, the most recent data available. That's a statistically significant drop of 0.1 year, about a month, from the previous year.Women can still expect to live longer than men -- 81.2 years vs. 76.3 years -- but both of those estimates were lower in 2015 than they were in 2014.Life expectancy at age 65 remained the same in 2015.
