IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) -- Just in time for spring break, county health officials announced Saturday that it's safe to go back into the waters of Imperial Beach. The re-opened beach-line includes the south end of Seacoast Drive to Carnation Avenue (including Camp Surf) in Imperial Beach.The ocean shoreline from the International Border to the south end of Seacoast Drive will remain closed until sampling confirms these areas are safe for water contact, officials said."Testing confirms water quality along the Imperial Beach shoreline meets State health standards following recent Tijuana River sewage impacts," said the Department of Environmental Health and Hazardous Materials Division."Recent water quality testing conducted by DEH confirms that Tijuana River flows are no longer impacting these beaches," the DEH said.The announcement comes after weeks of beach closures due to a sewage-contaminated runoff into the Tijuana River valley which flowed into south county beaches. The beaches have been closed over a dozen times as a result of the heavy rainfall this season."Tijuana River flows enter the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and associated estuary before being discharged to the Pacific Ocean, just over a mile north of the International Border," according to the DEH.Anyone who needs more information is asked to call the U.S. International Boundary & Water Commission at 619-662-7600. In 2135, NASA says an asteroid the size of the Empire State Building could slam into Earth.According to the Washington Post, scientists say, though the chance is small, the asteroid could slam into Earth on September 22, 2135, destroying lots of living things on the planet.The odds of the asteroid, named Bennu, actually hitting Earth are one in 2,700. If the asteroid does get too close for comfort, the geniuses at NASA have hatched a plan.NASA says they could send a nine-ton “bulk impactor” to push the asteroid out of Earth’s orbit. The plan is called HAMMER, which stands for (deep breath) Hypervelocity Asteroid Mitigation Mission for Emergency Response.Though the odds are slim that the massive asteroid will hit Earth, in 1908, what is believed to be an asteroid crashed in Siberia with force 185 times as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.The impact flattened 80 million trees and killed hundreds of reindeer. Scientists say Bennu isn’t all bad.The asteroid is giving scientists a chance to test theories. In a newly released documentary that debuted during the Rome Film Festival, Pope Francis made a statement supporting same-sex civil unions, the first pontiff to take that stance.“Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God,” Francis said in one of his sit-down interviews for the film called “Francesco.” He went on to say “You can't kick someone out of a family, nor make their life miserable for this. What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered.”Patrick Ambrosio, a leader in the San Diego gay and catholic community, said hearing this news feels like a step in the right direction.“In my Catholic faith, I’ve had a lot of struggles. I’m still blessed to know I still have a lot of support from my fellow catholics that are still supporting openly gay people like myself after all these year,” said Ambrosio.While the statement is a first and could create change in some parts of the world, Kevin Eckery, spokesperson for the Catholic Diocese of San Diego, said it won’t change anything in California.“Marriage is two different aspects. You’ve got the legal aspect which is we’ve got a marriage license from the state of California. And the religious aspect,” said Eckery.The Pope’s message addressed civil unions, not the sacrament of marriage, which has to be between a man and a woman. This will not change. Eckery added that the Pope has a history of making comments of support toward the gay community, so this is nothing new.“Nothing is changing about sacramental marriage and marriage within the Church. It’s just his way of reflecting on the laws surrounding marriage and the dignity of the individual,” said Eckery.For Ambrosio, it might not be a direct change locally, but it’s a step in the right direction. Hurricane Delta once again became a major hurricane on Thursday, with top winds of 120 mph as of 10 p.m. CT. The hurricane has regained much of the fury it lost crossing the Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday.In an update Thursday morning, the NHC said that Delta is expected to "grow in size" throughout the day on Thursday before bringing dangerous conditions to the Gulf Coast early Friday morning.Storm surge and hurricane warnings are already in effect for parts of the Gulf Coast, particularly along the Louisiana shoreline.Louisiana cities likely to see damaging winds from the hurricane include Alexandria, Lafayette, New Iberia, and Morgan City, according to the National Hurricane Center. On Thursday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Hunters found that Delta had a 30-mile wide eye. Government hurricane forecasters say they expect Delta to continue strengthening until early Friday morning, but then begin to weaken as strong shear is expected to affect the hurricane. Louisiana has taken the brunt of the impact of the 2020 hurricane season. Hurricanes Marco and Laura have already made landfall in the state, causing inland flooding and significant damage along the coast.
