SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Video captured shots ringing out, apparently pelting cars in a Rolando neighborhood, including the vehicles of a family already impacted by the pandemic.A shattered windshield is what Ondria Aviles found when she went to her Dodge Journey, parked outside her home along Marraco Drive on Monday night."Just couldn't believe that had happened," said Aviles.Her husband came out and found the driver side window of his truck - also parked on the street - was also shattered."My husband had a BB pellet hole in his window," said Aviles.Turns the moments their vehicles were vandalized were captured by neighbor Ryan Dick's surveillance camera. Just before 7:30 that night, a red sedan was recorded driving through when three shots rang out in a span of three seconds. The final two shots sounded near Aviles' vehicles.According to posts on the Nextdoor app, at least four other cars and homes were struck in a several-mile stretch. "Couldn't imagine if they missed and hit someone, a young child. We have three kids," said Aviles.Along with her outrage, there is frustration. The bill for the window damage will be a hardship. Because of the pandemic, she's been furloughed for several months. Her husband's work hours reduced."This is the worst time this could happen, in our current situation," said Aviles.That mystery car is believed to be a maroon Lexus IS. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego Health unveiled a drone pilot program they are a part of, testing flights containing sensitive medical samples and documents.The idea is to skip over traffic on the ground. "Unfortunately traffic seems to get worse and worse every year so what we're really trying to do is find alternatives for doing that," Matthew Jenusaitis, Chief Administrative Officer at UC San Diego Health said.San Diego is one of nine cities in the country testing the FAA's Integration Pilot Program."So the goal is to establish how the FAA is going to monitor a lot of their drone flights as we move forward," James Killeen, Emergency Medicine Physician and Professor of Emergency Medicine, said. He said this will help determine how other private delivery companies, like Amazon, will operate drones.This drone is three feet by three feet and carries a small UPS box. "The package itself is specially designed, impact resistant, temperature controlled... The container is locked, so only special people can open it," Killeen said.The drone is also equipped with a parachute.The program received FAA certification and authorization and will use low risk flight paths for the deliveries.They worked with the military on how to safely flhy their drone and established a ceiling of 300 feet.The flights themselves are completely automatic.The future, Jenusaitis said, is limitless, "we could potentially be using this to fly samples from our clinic 20 miles away from here, in Rancho Bernardo, to the hospital."Currently they are flying dummy samples. In the coming weeks they will fly medical samples from volunteer patients.There are no cameras on the drones, to ensure privacy of those on the ground. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across the country, there have been reports of racial discrimination against the Asian Pacific Islander community (API), including here in San Diego County.Erin Chew said she was wrapping up her grocery shopping trip in San Marcos when a man made eye contact with her and began speaking loudly about Asians."He just looked at me and started talking extremely loud to his partner or wife Looking at me saying Chinese people eat all this dirty stuff, eating bats and everything," Chew explained. She said the man also said, "I blame all the Chinese people for bringing this virus into this country."The incidents are not just happening out in public."My organization, SDS U'S Filipinx and Filipinx-American organization Andres Bonifacio Samahan was recently Zoombombed by a group of unknown individuals slandering us," said SDSU student Cristal Ami.Video from the Zoom meeting shows a group of unknown people yelling things like, "All you Asians have coronavirus!"In San Leandro, hate-filled notes were left on several homes, one read, "You have until May 23, Saturday at 10:30 AM to leave this country. No Asians allowed."An online reporting center called Stop AAPI Hate has been documenting the number of reported incidents against Asian Pacific Islanders across the country.As of April 29, it has received 1,711 reports, including 28 across San Diego County.The incidents range from verbal harassment and shunning, to physical assault.The San Diego Asian Pacific Islander (SD API) Coalition is working with San Diego Council President Georgette Gomez and Councilmember Monica Montgomery to put a resolution in front of the entire city council that will address the racial discrimination locally.The resolution proposes that the city should document and report hate crimes through Stop AAPI Hate and work with SD API to use the reported information to create targeted education and provide resources to those affected personally.SD API also said the city council would encourage the city's Human Relations Commission to address and investigate reported incidents.The city council will vote to adopt the resolution on June 2. 2150

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man was arrested last month after allegedly using a body bag and gurney to steal from a deceased man’s home, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.On August 31st, around noon, sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check at a Spring Valley home and discovered a 60-year-old man dead inside.They say he died of natural causes and was transported to a mortuary by a contracted independent mortuary service.A couple of days later, the victim’s family reported missing items, including a gun and a safe. They then watched surveillance video from the home and learned it had been burglarized.The alleged burglary happened about 11 hours after deputies responded to the welfare check.In the video provided by the sheriff's department, you see a man, now identified as Sammy Willie Gates, rolling a gurney and body bag out of the house and into a white van.Detectives say the body bag was full of stolen items.Gates is the owner of Mortuary Transportation services, a contracted independent mortuary service; however, deputies say his company was not used to transport the victim’s body earlier.It’s unclear how Gates would have known the home was empty.Detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station served a search warrant at Gates home in unincorporated El Cajon on September 9th.Inside, they found the victim’s safe and gun, along with 16 more firearms, two additional safes, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books, thousands of dollars in collectible coins, and multiple personal identifying documents.Detectives also found a gurney and body bag matching the items in the video in Gate’s white utility van.He was arrested and charged with felonies, including Burglary of the First Degree and Receiving Stolen Property.Gates has prior felonies and is due in court for a preliminary hearing in January. 1857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- InCahoots Dance Hall and Saloon in Mission Valley is usually packed with country music lovers  line dancing, two stepping and always having a great time.But on Monday nights, the dance floor is cleared out. The atmosphere goes from being country to cathartic. "I thank God for this group," said Lisa Como. Como is a member of a unique group. They all survived the massacre at Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas last October. The group estimates there are roughly 300 survivors across San Diego County and Temecula. They gather weekly to share their flashbacks and their fears. "All I remember, was thinking I just don't want to get shot in the back," said Como. "I just don't want to get shot in the back."Delanie Leone says people started dropping all around her. "We knew it was gunshots because the lady in front of us was shot and went down immediately. I'm not a nurse, I'm not an EMT. I just went into crisis mode," said Leone. Como said memories from that awful night haunt her every day. "I was driving down the road and I looked over at a car and I was like, oh my God, he could start shooting at me right now, and then I realized she had the same thoughts," said Como. A clinical psychologist for the navy leads the group in their healing and recovery. Dr Shiva Ghaed has spent decades treating veterans who suffer from PTSD.  She knew there would be countless survivors who are also vets. "Country music it appeals to, it's military heavy. I was really heartbroken thinking about the fact that this massacre happened to a group of people that are already previously exposed to an increased amount of trauma." said Dr. Ghaed. "I knew there would be thousands, and thousands and thousands and thousands of people that would have invisible injuries."She knows just how much those invisible injuries can hurt. She is also a survivor of the massacre."Honest to God, I don't know how I lived because I was in the kill zone, I was in the line of fire," said Dr. Ghaed. "People all around me were shot and killed and I just had to find some purpose and meaning in surviving that."  She's finding much of that purpose by leading the weekly therapy groups.  "I really think that that's how you make it a better world. If everybody steps up when they can, in the way that they can, and gives back it can be a better world," said Dr. Ghaed. Taylor Winston is a San Diego Marine who also lived through the shooting rampage. He made national headlines when he grabbed a truck and drove into the gunfire to save dozens of victims. Winston helped start the weekly support groups. "It means a lot to me to leverage whatever short term fame I was given throughout the whole massacre to put Shiva in front of people," said Winston. As people begin to emotionally heal, they're beginning to question the events of that night. "A lot of people are feeling left in the dark with the media moving on and kind of forgetting about us and just kind of seeing lack of security in the hotel," said Winston. "Just trying to prevent something similar from happening in the future."None of the survivors in this particular group have filed a lawsuit, but they are beginning to consider it."I don't think anyone is trying to get money out of it for any personal gain, but at the end of the day so many people were mentally affected by this, they've lost jobs, they've lost scholarships and sad to say people need money to stay afloat," said Winston. Recently, a new group calling itself Vegas Protest 4 Truth held a protest outside the Las Vegas Police Department's headquarters. The group wants the audio of the 911 calls to be released, along with all surveillance footage and body cam video related to the October 1st shooting that killed at least 58 people and wounded hundreds.  They're also demanding the release of search warrant findings and sealed court documents. "With such little information, everyone's mind is going to wander and think conspiracy and that's honestly a fair thought for a lot of people," said Winston. "A lot of it doesn't make sense and people are starting to recover and get mentally strong and ask questions." Right now, their focus remains on recovery. San Diego survivors are working with survivors across the country to help them start similar support groups. "I think of country strong as this, I see the faces.
