SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council unanimously approved David Nisleit as the next chief of the San Diego Police Department.A search committee interviewed candidates and took public comment on the hiring before announcing Nisleit as the top candidate February 1."SDPD is poised to enter a new era of excellence," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer at the news conference. Faulconer will conduct Nisleit's swearing-in ceremony Tuesday morning.“Dave Nisleit is a San Diegan who cares deeply about making our city better and keeping our neighborhoods safe,” the Mayor said in a statement Monday. “He is someone who holds himself and his officers to the highest ethical and professional standards. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This weekend job seekers are invited to the San Diego Cannabis and Hemp Job Fair & Business Mixer.Organizer Joshua Caruso, with the San Diego Cannabis Farmers Market, says it’s an important milestone one year after recreational marijuana was legalized in California. “We felt that the community really needed to know the brands and dispensaries and hemp companies that are local,” said Caruso. He says it’s the first job fair held in San Diego since recreational marijuana was legalized in the state.Over 30 companies will be at the event, including Golden State Greens located in Point Loma. “We are working professionals, we’re moms and dads and sisters and brothers and aunts and uncles, we’re just trying to shed a positive light on the industry,” said Golden State Greens Manager, Joshua Wilson. Wilson says Golden State Greens is a leader when it comes to complying with new state regulations and that they’re working to combat the negative stigma some still have about the industry.Companies are looking for employees of all skill levels, from managers to drivers. “There’s going to be people in suits, there’s going to be multi-million dollar companies, this is a real industry, this is a very thriving industry,” said Wilson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The University of California system has appointed its first-ever Black president in the system’s history, Cal Matters said Tuesday.Michael V. Drake will become the 21st president of the University of California.Drake is making the move after leaving The Ohio State University last week. There, he served as the university’s president from 2014 to 2020.Drake was also chancellor of UC Irvine for nine years and served as the University of California vice president for health affairs from 2000 to 2005.“Much has changed in the 15 years since I was given the privilege of becoming chancellor at UC Irvine, but not my absolute belief in this great University and its time-honored mission,” Drake said. “I look forward to working with the regents, chancellors, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our broader community as we, together, guide the University through the challenging times ahead. Those who came here for a better life say they are contributing to the economy and their communities. They say it's unfair to paint all undocumented immigrants as criminals.Jesus Mendez Carbajal, a DACA recipient and Human Rights Organizer for Alliance San Diego, believes the lawsuit is unfair and infringes on state's rights.However, some U.S. citizens say it's about time an administration took serious action against states.Brenda Sparks recently moved out of California because of its sanctuary laws. She doesn't believe the state is doing enough to protect its legal citizens.Now she lives in Mesa, Arizona.Almost seven years ago, Spark's son Eric was killed when an undocumented immigrant without a drivers license hit him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The possibility of Topgolf coming to San Diego took another step forward Tuesday.During a Port of San Diego board meeting, staff were authorized to begin to negotiate and enter into an exclusive negotiating agreement with Topgolf, according to the Port. Once the Port enters into the agreement, staff can begin to refine their proposal for the land, allow Topgolf to conduct its own due diligence, and negotiate terms until the agreement expires on Dec. 31, 2020.According to documents, Port and Topgolf officials are eyeing East Harbor Island's "Elbow Parcel" area along North Harbor Drive as a potential location for a seven-acre site. The report goes on to say the project could help ignite future development of the area with more entertainment and hotel options."As an attractor, Topgolf is in that special category or destination activities which are likely to draw patrons to the Port, and who will utilize hotel rooms, restaurants and bars, visitor attractions and recreational boating throughout the Port lands," the analysis said. "While this report details the economic impact of Topgolf, it likely does not do justice to its overall impact as an enhancement to San Diego's front door."Topgolf's proposal includes a facility featuring a driving range, restaurant, bar, meeting space, event and stage area, outdoor patios, three levels of golf bays, and additional games and entertainment, according to the Port.
