BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao made five proposals on promoting Sino-U.S. relations and tackling delicate issues of common concern while meeting with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama in Beijing Tuesday.     Obama, who is in Beijing for a four-day state visit to China, agreed with Hu on the proposals, reiterating that the United States does not seek to contain China's rise and that he welcomes China as a "strong, prosperous and successful member of the community of nations."     FURTHER STRATEGIC MUTUAL TRUST     Hu called on the two countries to continue to increase strategic mutual trust with prerequisite of respect for each other's core interests and major concerns.     He hailed Obama's statement that the United States sticks to the one-China policy and hoped that the United States would "properly handle" the Taiwan issue and forbid "Tibet independence" and "East Turkistan" forces from using U.S. territory to cover their anti-China separatist activities.     In Hu's words, China and the United States should not be opponents, but partners that trust each other and cooperate sincerely.     "The development of China is an opportunity for all nations, including the United States," Hu said. "It is not a challenge, let alone a threat."     MAINTAIN EXCHANGES AT ALL LEVELS     Hu said China and the United States should maintain different levels of communication and consultation on major issues in a timely manner through different channels, including exchange of visits, talks and meetings on multilateral occasions.     The two countries should further substantiate the results of the first round of Sino-U.S. Strategic Economic Dialogue and start soon to prepare for the second round of talks in Beijing next summer, Hu said, calling the dialogue an important platform to enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.     STEP UP MACRO CONTROL     It is "necessary" for China and the United States to step up cooperation on coordinating macro economic and financial policies, pushing forward reforms in the international financial system and improving global economic governance structure, Hu said.     He also raised the issue of trade frictions, voicing hope that the United States would loosen restrictions on its export of hi-tech products to China as soon as possible, while recognizing China's market economy status and facilitating expansion of trade and investment cooperation.     "Under the current circumstances," Hu said, "the two countries should more resolutely oppose and resist trade protectionism in any form."     ADVANCE EXCHANGES, COOPERATION IN VARIOUS AREAS     The other areas proposed by Hu for further cooperation between China and the United States include infrastructure, climate change and clean energy, and exchange of students.     He said China is willing to work with the United States on space exploration and construction of high-speed railways.     The two sides should take the launch of the joint clean energy research center as a turning point and deepen cooperation on energy saving, emissions reduction, renewable energy and treatment of environmental pollution, Hu said.     China is also willing to increase counter-terrorism cooperation with the United Stats on a basis of mutual benefit and hold dialogues with the United States on issues of human rights and religions based on the principle of equality, mutual respect and non-interference with each other's internal affairs, said Hu.     WORK TOGETHER TO MEET GLOBAL, REGIONAL CHALLENGES     Hu proposed that the two countries should continue to work together on global and regional hot issues in light of the benefit gained in recent years by cooperating on climate change, nuclear non-proliferation, crackdown on transnational crimes, disaster relief and prevention and treatment of contagious diseases.

CAIRO, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- China and Africa look forward to deepening cooperation in various fields, especially science and technology, industry, agriculture and environment, said Egyptian and Chinese officials at a science and technology expo, which opened here on Thursday.     In the opening ceremony of China Exhibition on Innovative Technologies and Products in Egypt, Minister of Higher Education and the State for Scientific Research of Egypt, Dr. Hani Hillal, said that his country reaffirms the support for scientific and technological cooperation between China and Africa.     "China exhibition is an important forum to know more about the progress China has reached in scientific and technological fields, and it is also an important forum for the convergence of scientists and researchers with the men from industry and innovation," Hillal added.  An electric vehicle is on display during an exhibition showcasing Chinese innovative technologies and products in Cairo, capital of Egypt, on Dec. 3, 2009. More than 180 new technologies and products with Chinese proprietary innovations highlighted the three-day exhibition, kicking off here on Thursday    "Egyptian-Chinese relations are steadily growing and several weeks ago Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao opened the 4th ministerial conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC)," said Magid George, Egypt's Minister of State for the Environment.     George said that the expo is an important event to present Chinese technology to African and Arab countries because China is considered a leading nation in development, expressing hope that the exhibition will provide an opportunity for the countries to get acquainted with progress in technology and innovation amid great challenges.     This exhibition is held in line with the eight measures announced by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during the 4th ministerial conference of FOCAC held last month in Sharm el-Sheikh to promote technological cooperation between China and Africa, said Special Representative of the Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Zheng Guoan, noting that it could transfer technological expertise and experience to African countries.     "This exhibition is part of a technological partnership program aimed at strengthening China-Africa relationship and helping African countries raise the technological capability," he added.     The Chinese Ambassador in Cairo, Wu Chunhua, pointed out that China is the largest developing country in the world and Africa has the most developing countries in the world, stressing that such cooperation would benefit both sides.     "This exhibition is a good platform and mechanism to achieve mutual understanding between China and Africa," he added. BEIJING, Nov. 4 -- China's increasingly voracious investment in overseas markets is helping the global economy - and especially the economies of developing countries - recover from the financial crisis, according to several speakers at the First China Overseas Investment Fair Tuesday.     Chinese officials urged foreign countries to make it easier for that investment to continue to flow by creating a "convenient and fair" environment for Chinese investors.     Outbound investment from China in overseas markets has grown significantly recently, at the same time as investment from traditional big spenders, including the United States and European countries, has slowed.     "China is stepping up its overseas efforts, despite the economic recession worldwide," said Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice-director of the National Development and Reform Commission. "Many of China's companies are active investors."     China's overseas direct investment rose 190 percent year-on-year in the third quarter, bringing the total investment for the first nine months to 32.87 bln U.S. dollars, the Ministry of Commerce announced recently.     That growth has been a blessing for many countries recently, Zhang said.     Jon Huntsman, the US ambassador to China, agreed, saying China's investment was "important in improving and stimulating the world economy".     Huntsman said the US has benefited from the investments of other nations. Between 2003 and 2008, countries invested more than 325 billion dollars in some 4,300 projects in the US.     Huntsman said China was "one of the nations with the fastest growing investment in the US" with an annual growth rate in investment volume of 30 percent throughout the 2004-to-2008 period.     "China is a leading nation in stimulating the revival of developing economies by way of investment," said Taffere Tesfachew, chief of the Office of the Secretary-General under the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).     Statistics from UNCTAD shows that in 2008, investment flowing out of the US declined by 18 percent to 312 billion. Flows from EU nations plunged by 30 percent to 837 billion. But emerging economies, and China in particular, increased overseas investment, Tesfachew told China Daily.     Nations and regional areas throughout "Africa and Asia could benefit a lot from it," he added.     F. Marcelle Gairy, Grenada's ambassador to China, said: "We have great sunshine to grow plants and many other advantageous sectors to tap. China has good technology to realize our dreams."     "It is win-win investment," she said.     "China's technology is cheaper, innovative and very useful," added Mifzal Ahmed, advisor on investments for the Maldives' Ministry of Economic Development.     While the UNCTAD forecasts investment outflows from Asia will slow this year, the organization believes the region will still outperform the rest of the world.     "Outflows from China and India are the most noteworthy," said Tesfachew.

BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Diplomats from the European Union (EU) member states on Tuesday spoke highly of China's recent promise on its greenhouse gas emissions reduction.     "We welcome that national objective of China," EU ambassador to China Serge Abou said at a press conference in response to related questions.     China, as the biggest developing nation, set a good example for the international efforts in emissions reduction, he noted.     China announced on Nov. 26 that it would reduce the intensity of its carbon dioxide emissions per GDP unit in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent from the 2005 level.     Swedish Ambassador to China Mikael Lindstrom, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency, told Xinhua that he and his country "have a lot of respect for the series of efforts" that china has made.     "The climate change is really a serious global crisis, we cannot fall into a zero-sum game," he said, noting that "we hope it will be win-win, but if we don't do anything it will be lose-lose".     As the hosting nation of the Copenhagen climate change conference, Denmark's diplomat Soren Jacobsen welcomed Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's attendance to the upcoming meeting.     China's announcement of its emissions cut promise "is positive", said Soren Jacobsen, Deputy Head of Mission and Minister Counsellor of the Danish embassy to China.     Jacobsen hoped that an agreement would be reached at Copenhagen.     The diplomats from EU's all member states gathered here at the press conference to mark that the Treaty of Lisbon came into effect on Dec. 1.     As stipulated in the Treaty, the Delegation of the European Commission to China was renamed the Delegation of the European Union to China on Tuesday.

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Friday called for continued efforts to further study and practice the Scientific Outlook on Development.     Xi made the remarks at a meeting on further studying and practicing the Scientific Outlook on Development, which emphasizes the well-being of people and comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development.     The CPC launched an 18-month campaign to study and implement the outlook in September last year.     The campaign had so far yielded positive results, Xi said.     The Vice President urged relevant authorities to focus on improving social harmony and stability as well as party building at grassroots levels.     They should also focus on speeding up the transformation of the country's economic development mode, and should make meticulous plans for next year's work, in order to push forward reforms and development and maintain stability, he said.
