SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a shooting involving U.S. Customs and Border Protection near the San Ysidro Port of Entry Monday night. The San Diego Police Department told 10News the suspect is a 23-year-old man in a white pickup truck who was trying to drive into the United States from Mexico.Police say he had been directed to a secondary screening area but failed to stop for an inspection and began firing at border agents. The man attempted to drive away, but authorities shot back. SDPD said at least seven CBP officers fired their weapons, killing the driver.According to a witness who was driving to the border from National City, police could be heard telling someone to pull over. The witness added that a police helicopter could also be seen in the area. San Diego Police say they're helping with the shooting investigation, which originally involved Border Patrol and CBP. SARASOTA COUNTY, Florida — Sheriff Tom Knight announced the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is seeking candidates to protect 12 of its elementary schools in the county.The sheriff is looking to hire 14 candidates to fill the newly designed School Resource Deputy II position.“It has been our goal from day one to identify a practical and cost-effective solution for the school district,” said Sheriff Knight. “After ample research and internal review, we put together a program that is not only compliant with the new law, but will stand to benefit the district and its students, while appealing to law enforcement-certified career seekers looking to give back to this community. SAN MARCOS (KGTV) -- A homicide investigation is underway after one person was killed in a San Marcos crash Friday afternoon.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened around 4:15 p.m. on West San Marcos Boulevard and South Rancho Santa Fe Road.When deputies arrived, they found an unidentified woman in the back seat with trauma to her body. She was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the vehicle was detained.The department’s homicide unit responded and has taken over the investigation, the department said Saturday.The names of the driver and victim haven’t been released at this time and the details surrounding the crash remain unclear. 694

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV)  -- A former navy corpsman who's saved hundreds of lives says she was only doing, "What any American would do". Gina Austin could not take seeing the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. She packed up kayaks, jet skis and supplies and headed to Texas where she helped save people and pets. Austin makes it sound simple. But she was elbow deep in devastation for a week. Her first rescue was a tiny one."We found a little Chihuahua and we were calling her baby girl," she said, noting that she worked with a rescue group to help save thousands of animals. "People had chained their animals up so we actually had to go in with bolt cutters. There were dogs just clinging to cars..."At one point, Austin said she saw a family in a steel boat paddling toward her with shovels. "And they asked… did anybody see a little Chihuahua?"
