Should the country's most populous state be split into three separate states? California voters might be able to make that decision this fall.A local venture capitalist's proposal to break up California, "CAL 3," gained nearly double the necessary signatures to get it on the ballot in November, which will allow state voters to decide on the partition.Tim Draper announced Thursday that his initiative had gotten more than 600,000 signatures from registered voters across all of the state's 58 counties, surpassing the 365,880 signatures required by state law."This is an unprecedented show of support on behalf of every corner of California to create three state governments that emphasize representation, responsiveness, reliability and regional identity," Draper said. 800

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) -- The search for a woman who owns a flower shop in Rancho Santa Fe has ended Monday night after authorities say Penelope Elizabeth Bax was found alive.Bax’s sister said she was spotted in Hirz Bay, a campground off of Lake Shasta, which has 6,200 miles of rivers and streams. Her sister says she thinks Bax ran out of gas in her Mercedes RV and her cell phone was dead.Bax was found dehydrated but stable and was airlifted to a local hospital. Her dog Walter is also being treated. The search for the 63-year-old began on March 31 after deputies with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office learned that Bax was traveling to a family member’s home in Washington but hadn’t arrived yet.According to deputies, Bax left Vista on March 26. She was expected to arrive in Washington on March 29 but never showed up. 845

Skyrocketing sales has landed Lego's new "Women of NASA" play set as Amazon's No. 1 best-selling toy in just 24 hours.Astronomer Nancy Grace Roman, computer scientist Margaret Hamilton, and astronauts Sally Ride and Mae Jemison, the four women who played vital roles in the US space program are now immortalized in a 231-piece Lego set, accompanied by three builds illustrating their areas of expertise. The set went on sale Wednesday morning, at a price of .99, and it quickly sold out on Amazon, creating great positive feedback on social media under #WomenofNASA. Smash Mouth says they've received hate mail from fans after taking part in a concert during an event that's since been linked to the spread of more than 100 cases of COVID-19.The band performed an Aug. 9 concert at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota in front of a closely-grouped crowd. Many of those in attendance were not wearing masks. During the performance, lead singer Steve Harwell was heard saying, "f*** that Covid s***."In the weeks since the event, at least 103 cases of COVID-19 have been linked directly to the Sturgis rally. And while it's unclear how many of those cases (if any) are linked directly to the Smash Mouth concert, the band has faced criticism since its performance.Earlier this week, the band posted a video of "recent fan mail" that they've received. It included an expletive-filled note calling the group "selfish," along with a smashed CD.Note: The Instagram post below contains explicit language. 947

SpaceX’s test flight of its next-generation Starship rocket was deemed a success, despite a bit of an explosive landing. As part of the launch, SpaceX attempted to perform a “flip landing” of the rocket. Although the flip landing resulted in the rocket blowing up, the finish was not unexpected.“Lot of things need to go right, so maybe 1/3 chance,” SpaceX founder Elon Musk said last month about the odds of the rocket nailing the landing. The rocket’s mission was not to leave Earth’s atmosphere, but to test several parts of the Starship rocket.“This suborbital flight is designed to test a number of objectives, from how the vehicle’s three Raptor engines perform to the overall aerodynamic entry capabilities of the vehicle (including its body flaps) to how the vehicle manages propellant transition. SN8 will also attempt to perform a landing flip maneuver, which would be a first for a vehicle of this size,” SpaceX said before the flight.SpaceX said even if not everything went correctly, there would be plenty to learn from this test to improve on future flights.“With a test such as this, success is not measured by completion of specific objectives but rather how much we can learn, which will inform and improve the probability of success in the future as SpaceX rapidly advances development of Starship,” SpaceX said.Musk deemed aspects of the launch a success.“Successful ascent, switchover to header tanks & precise flap control to landing point!” Musk tweeted. The rocket remained airborne for over six minutes, and it was slated to reach an altitude of 41,000 feet. 1591
