ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — First it was toilet paper and now there are reports of a shortage of outdoor recreational equipment, specifically kayaks. But one local business owner says San Diego is ready to meet the demand during the COVID pandemic. Bruce Damon, the owner of Nomad Ventures in Escondido, says after a 10-week shutdown they are back serving outdoor enthusiasts."We're just hoping that people can get out and enjoy themselves safely, and kayaking was one of the first things that I understood was considered a safe endeavor," says Damon.In what came as a surprise to Damon, he saw media reports saying kayaks were in short supply due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That hasn't been the case at Nomad Ventures"We've had the busiest year as far as I can remember in terms of kayaks selling a lot of kayaks here," Damon said. So to say there is a kayak shortage, at least in San Diego, would not be accurate as far as Damon is concerned."Our shutdown was right when we were at complete inventory," Damon said. "Stock levels were high, and when we reopened, we had stock."He was quite alarmed when customers were steered towards shopping online when his shop was completely full of outdoor products. "We have back stock in storage units that we pull from to restock the store. We just picked up a new load of five kayaks, so we are fortunate that we have product," Damon said.His message to customers in the market for a new kayak is quite simple, shop small business and local."We've been in business 40 years, so we felt it was important to get our message out. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Felicita County Park is just south of Escondido and is one of the largest and oldest parks in San Diego County. It’s named after a Native American woman who helped preserve history more than a century ago.Dove Toler is a San Pasqual Tribal Council member and has studied the rich Native American history of his own tribe, writing a book about his family’s past, and the history of the surrounding San Diego area. He said one of the most unique factors about Felicita LaChappa was the information she possessed.Toler said it’s estimated that LaChappa was born around 1820 during the Mexican era. He said during this era, Native people were dealing with the invasions of many different other cultures in addition to battling disease, so it’s incredible that she survived this period. This gave a window into a time period that many did not remember or live through.“She was able to survive, she didn’t get the diseases, she was able to marry, she was able to prosper in a sense that she survived,” he said, adding that, “Felicita survived during that turbulent time, those that were here were able to photograph her, interview her and now in honor of her, name this beautiful park after Felicita.”The park’s property was bought by San Diego County in 1929 and was named after LaChappa to honor her. To this day, there are still holes in some large rocks, evidence of the Native American people who once lived there. Toler estimates those artifacts to be 3,000 or 4,000 years old.Tolder added that the county has done a good job of adding signage around the park to educate the public on the history of LaChappa and the other Native Americans who once lived there. 1696

(KGTV) - A baby python caught on video being snatched from a reptile store in Escondido has been recovered.Late Wednesday afternoon, police told 10news a break in case led them to a home in Escondido, where a woman spotted in surveillance video admitted to taking the snake and turned it over. The theft took place at LLL Reptile last Friday afternoon."Just shocking because of the way she did it," said District Mangaer Joe Alvarez.Video shows her walking around the reptile shop for about ten minutes, before something catches her eye. On the video, she's seen staring down an employee before she appears to slide open the top of a tank and grab something. Another camera shows her walking right past the checkout counter. From the final camera angle, a yellow snake is seen squirming in her purse."Looks like the snake is making one last ditch effort to get away, you see her literally grab the snake and put it in her purse before she walks out," said Alvarez.That snake is a baby yellow-colored, green tree python, about ten inches long. "A lot of guys pour their heart and soul into caring for these animals, and someone comes and just rips it out. It hurts," said Alvarez.Alvarez was concerned about the snake's welfare, because it requires high heat and humidity. The conditions are more important because of his young age, about three months old. Those worries dissipated when police stopped by the shop on Wednesday, snake in hand. Employees tell 10news the staff was "over the moon excited." Police tell 10news the woman was wanted on 5 outstanding warrants, including at least one drug-related warrant. She was taken into custody.Employees at LLL Reptile say the snake appears to be healthy and is doing well. 1747

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Neighbors in an Escondido neighborhood are worried after they say dozens of tires were slashed overnight Saturday.The incidents reportedly happened on 4th Avenue and 2nd Avenue between Date and Elm Streets.Residents on 4th Avenue reported waking up Sunday morning to find that at least 11 vehicles had their tires slashed.Similarly, residents on 2nd avenue reported that nearly 30 vehicles had slashed tires.Police said they have been made aware of the incidents but it’s unclear if they have a suspect or will be investigating.Imagine waking up and finding your tires slashed, then finding out it happened to DOZENS more on your block.
