BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China and Cuba Wednesday held a banquet to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.Zhou Yongkang, a member of China's top leadership, and visiting Vice President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz addressed the banquet.Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said China-Cuba relations have endured the changes of the international situation for 50 years.The two countries have also deepened exchange and cooperation in politics, economics and culture."We see from history that it is the common hope of both parties,countries and peoples to maintain a friendly relationship. It is also in the interests of both sides," Zhou said.He said China values its traditional friendship with Cuba.He also said China admires Cuba for its insistence on its sovereignty and its adherence to socialism."China will firmly support Cuba to find a way to development in accordance with its national situation. GUANGZHOU, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Police conducted a hostage rescue drill on Sunday in south China's Guangzhou City as authorities beefed up security about one month prior to the opening of the 2010 Asian Games.Police first practiced rescue operation simulating the bus hostage crisis in the Philippine capital about two months ago. Eight Hong Kong tourists were slain during an ill-prepared rescue by the Philippine police against a lone gunman who hijacked a tourist bus in Manila on Aug. 23.Police officers were not told of the time and location of the drill in advance to test the emergency response of the city's police forces, a senior police officer said.During the drill, a group of armed men "hijacked" a bus carrying athletes and gunned down security guards on their way out of the Asian Games Village. After "negotiations" failed, police quickly broke into the bus and seized the attackers.The second part of the drill involved in rescuing "hijacked" foreign athletes in a room in the Village.After finding the hijackers attempted to kill the hostages, the police stormed the room, overwhelming the attackers and freeing the hostages.Chinese authorities have activated over one hundred checkpoints on the roads and waterways linking areas to the hosting cities of the Games on Sunday.A total of 132 checkpoints, scattered in Guangdong Province and five neighboring regions, are responsible for screening people, vehicles and goods, officials with the Ministry of Public Security said.The 2010 Asian Games is scheduled to open on Nov. 12. The events will be held in four cities in Guangdong.

TIANJIN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday said developing countries' right to development must be guaranteed in order to achieve a positive progress in tackling with climate change problems.As a developing country which is experiencing rapid growth, China will continue to fulfill its due responsibilities in reducing greenhouse gases emissions, said Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo.While addressing a new round of UN climate talks which opened Monday in north China's Tianjin Municipality, Dai said the principle of sustainable development must be followed."Economic development, poverty alleviation and climate protection should be considered in a coordinated way in order to achieve a win-win result between achieving development and dealing with climate change," Dai said.He suggested the negotiations should stick to the basic framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Kyoto Protocol and the mandate of the Bali Roadmap and follow the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities."The developed countries should set the targets to take the lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and arrangements should be made to provide adequate financial and technological support to developing countries, he said."All countries should consolidate and enlarge the common ground (on climate change issues) so as to actively push forward the talks and reach a legally binding agreement at an early date," Dai told some 3,000 delegates from party and observer countries under the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol.He said the UN climate talks had entered a critical stage and the Tianjin meeting should make positive progress in order to pave the way for the year-end Cancun summit in Mexico.As a responsible developing country, China will continue to play an active and constructive role in the climate talks, Dai said.He stressed China, as a country of 1.3 billion people with per capita GDP ranking about 100th in the world, faces the serious task of growing the economy and improving people's livelihood."At a stage of accelerated industrialization and urbanization, China's energy demand will see further reasonable growth. Therefore, we face significant constraints in controlling greenhouse gas emissions," he said.The Chinese government made clear-cut goals before the Copenhagen climate talks in late 2009, including cutting the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent, compared with 2005 levels.China also said it would increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 15 percent and have 40 million more hectares of forest by 2020.Last December, the UN climate change conference was held in Denmark and adopted the Copenhagen Accord -- a non-binding document.The Tianjin talks, scheduled to run from Oct. 4 to 9, is the final meeting before the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Cancun at the end of this year.

BEIJING, Sep. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Thursday called upon Chinese industrial firms to improve the quality of their products as part of the efforts to transform China's economic growth pattern.Chinese enterprises should boost the quality of industrial products by upgrading their technologies and establishing a quality-based credit system of enterprises, said Zhang at a forum held in Beijing which focused on how to improve the quality and reputation of Chinese industrial products.He also called for accelerating the establishment of industrial standardization system, actively taking part in drafting and revising of related international standards and establishing a reward and punishment system that favors firms that manufacture high-quality products.Zhang also urged China's domestic firms to step up efforts to nurture indigenous brands to make "made in China" a byword for high-quality products.
