BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's insurers felt the side effect of the country's booming auto market -- with operating losses totaling 2.9 billion yuan (427 million U.S. dollars) in 2009.Insurance Association of China said here Friday that its 30 member insurance companies that are engaged in traffic compulsory insurance business underwrote 85.02 million units of vehicles in 2009, up 23 percent from a year ago.Total compulsory insurance premiums rose 21 percent year on year to 66.8 billion yuan (9.84 billion U.S. dollars), according to the association.Meanwhile, the industry handled 11.78 million claims regarding traffic liability mandatory insurance products last year with reimbursements totaling 47.2 billion yuan (6.95 billion U.S. dollars), it said.Offsetting 2.4 billion yuan (353 million U.S. dollars) investment revenue with 18.6-billion-yuan (2.74 billion U.S. dollars) operating costs, the industry posted a loss of 2.9 billion yuan (427 million U.S. dollars) last year, according to the association.Retail sales of China-made autos rose 17.18 percent year on year to 1.056 million units in July this year, raising auto sales in the first seven months to more than 8.24 million units, up 28.58 percent from a year earlier, according to data from the China Automotive Technology and Research Center released earlier this month.

HANGZHOU, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A new regular direct passenger sea route between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan was officially opened Saturday after a ship safely returned from Taiwan.The passenger ship, Coscostar, returned to the Damaiyu Port, Taizhou City of eastern Zhejiang Province Saturday, making it the second port on the mainland that has served the regular direct sea route with Taiwan, said He Jinliang, deputy head of the city's Taiwan affairs office.On June 26, the ship, carrying more than 500 passengers, traveled about 302 km to the Keelung Port of Taiwan, He said.With a tonnage of 26,800, the ship, owned by the China Ocean Shipping Companies Group, could carry about 600 passengers, 256 containers and 150 automobiles.The COSCO Star Passenger Ro-Ro Ship is berthed inside the Dabaiyu Port, prior to its maiden voyage to Keelung of Taiwan, at Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, June 26, 2010.The ship is scheduled to shuttle once a week. It will depart from Damaiyu in Yuhuan County on Saturday night and return the following Friday. The single trip would take eight to nine hours, traveling at various speed.Wang Yihao, deputy head of Yuhuan County, said the standard ticket costs 600 yuan (88.6 U.S.dollars) and the deluxe class ticket costs 1,000 yuan."The prices are nearly half that of airline tickets. XINING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior anti-corruption official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Monday urged strict supervision and inspection of relief and reconstruction work in Zhouqu County, which was devastated by a massive mudslide on Aug. 8.A supervision and inspection system must be established to ensure thorough implementation of the central authorities' instructions on disaster relief and reconstruction, said He Yong, deputy secretary of the CPC's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.He made the remarks at a conference on supervision and inspection of relief funds and supplies.He instructed intensified supervision and inspection of medical, mud-clearing, infrastructure rebuilding, resident relocation and epidemic prevention operations.He also ordered stepped-up supervision of the use of disaster relief funds, supplies and donations, and asked local officials to make public how they were utilizing the funds in a timely manner.He said the principle of openness and transparency must be applied throughout the period of disaster relief work and reconstruction, and vowed to punish any misuse of relief funds and supplies.The mudslide has killed 1,254 while 490 people remain missing as of Monday.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and consequent floods have left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Latest figures from the ministry show that, as of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, rain-triggered floods had affected some 29 million people and 997,000 had been evacuated.Further, the direct economic loss had reached 19.75 billion yuan (2.89 billion U.S. dollars).
