"Two things I love most in this in the world are snowboarding and surfing, and he helped created both of those," Saling said.Saling organized the paddle-out shortly after the announcement of snowboard legend Jake Burton Carpenter's death on Wednesday. Saling carried a Burton snowboard into the waves and placed it on top of his surfboard as he paddled out.Burton is credited for reinventing the sport and culture of snowboarding. Friends and former Burton Snowboards employees now living in San Diego shared their memories with Carpenter. "At my interview, his first question was, 'Do you snowboard?' And I actually lied to him. I said, 'I did.' I was a skier. And then from that moment when he hired me, I never skied ever since, so I owe my life to Jake," former employee Mike Hoefer said. Many who knew Carpenter said he was a man who thought outside of the box. Not quite turning things upside down, just sideways."You could get on the mountain, but he turned everything sideways and just made everything more fun," surfer and snowboarder Chris Dodds said. ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A 57-year-old man in a pickup truck was killed at a head-on collision in Escondido with a Honda Accord, a police lieutenant said Saturday.The crash involving the 2005 Honda Accord and a 1996 Toyota Tacoma occurred on Valley Parkway, north of Beven Drive, said Escondido police Lt. Michael Kearney.The Honda was going west on Valley Parkway and the pickup truck was going eastbound on Valley Parkway, just north of Beven Drive, at the time of the crash, Kearney said.Police were dispatched to the scene at 11:30 p.m Friday, where the 57- year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and paramedics rushed the motorist in the Honda, a 36-year-old man, to Palomar Medical Center, where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries, he said.Escondido police asked witnesses to the crash to call them at (760) 839-4470. 851

(KGTV) — Encinitas officials announced a "one-of-a-kind" crosswalk has been placed across Coast Highway 101 in downtown.Officials say the artistic crosswalk featuring surfboard shapes and waves spans across the highway at G Street and took two years of coordination between city staff and City Council to put together. The city says the crosswalk will improve walkability and bring more public art to the area.Artist Steffen Vala, whose work has appeared around the globe and been featured by Apple, Marvel, and other big brands, was commissioned for the crosswalk."The iconography of surfboard shapes is a nod to each surfer's 'magic board,' unique to them like their fingerprint. Juxtaposing this individualism is a unifying tidal wave laid out like the ocean's fingerprint that connects all the surfboards. This symbolizes the unifying, collective, 'party wave' we are all riding and our love in protecting the environment while celebrating our differences," the city said in a release.The city says the crosswalk is the longest decorative crosswalk of its kind and first one across a historic highway. 1132

Fans at a California softball tournament weren't happy when an official announced that the National Anthem would not be played before Friday's game, so they took matters into their own hands and started singing.The championship game between Clovis High School and Buchanan High School was the second game of the day at Fresno State's softball stadium.
