SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bernie Sanders is showing his support for dozens of hotel workers on strike over their pay and benefits. The former presidential candidate stood alongside protestors at The Westin Hotel on Friday. “Nobody wants to do this. We would all like to work right now,” says employee Arturo Ramirez.Ramirez has been working at The Westin Hotel since February. With the high cost of living in San Diego, Ramirez says its sometimes hard to pay the bills.“My mother and I, we work at the same hotel. We’re struggling to pay ,100 in rent," Ramirez says.Bernie Sanders took the stage to show his support to workers during his visit to San Diego.“We’re saying to Marriott who owns Westin, we’re saying to every corporation in this country who make billions of dollars in profit, pay your workers a living wage," Sanders said to a crowd of protesters.Employees are asking for a raise of at least an hour and a chance to save for their retirement.“It’s a billion dollar company that needs to pay the workers a living wage so they can live in the city of San Diego," says Bridgett Browning, President of Unite Here Union. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Beaches in San Diego are expected to be packed for the Fourth of July weekend as other nearby counties shut down their beaches over coronavirus concerns.Local law enforcement agencies are prepared for the influx in beachgoers, but many are hoping and wondering if people will follow San Diego County’s facial covering and social distancing requirements.On Friday, ABC 10News crews observed visitors at Mission Beach keeping their distance from each other and most of them wearing facial coverings.Many visitors came to the beach early to secure spots for what will likely be a busy weekend.The Cotus family, visiting San Diego from Arizona, heard about Gov. Gavin Newsom closing beaches where coronavirus numbers are rising. But the family took the chance that San Diego beaches would stay open.“We figured this morning we got the kids up. OK, let’s take a chance; either we can get to the beach or we can’t. If not, there’s a pool at the hotel,” Edward Cotus said.Law enforcement agencies said they will be out this weekend reminding people about the rules. However, they say it will be up to the public to follow them.The Cotus family said they understand why people don’t like wearing the face coverings, but they believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to do their part in controlling the spread of this virus.“We all have to be responsible and just try to really implement social distancing on our own. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Callum Wagner rose up among the capacity crowd inside a University City ballroom Monday. He took the stage in front of hundreds, as they gave him a standing ovation."My mom keeps saying it's a big deal," said Callum, 12. "I don't like to talk about it."Callum's mom, Beverly Wagner, says she wouldn't be alive today if not for her son. That's why on Monday, Callum was one of three children honored as 2020 local 9-1-1 for kids heroes. It was July 1, 2019. Beverly had just got out of the jacuzzi in their Alpine home when she said she was feeling ill. Moments later, she was unconscious, suffering cardiac arrest. Callum was the oldest other person home at the time. He called 9-1-1, and Heartland Dispatcher Kim Gonzales picked up. "All I remember hearing him say was, his mom is dead, and at that point, it's go time," Gonzales said. For the next eight minutes waiting for first responders, Gonzalez instructed a desperate Callum how to deliver C.P.R. "She's not breathing," Callum told her on the phone call."It's OK, keep doing 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4," Gonzales responded. It was Callum's first time delivering C.P.R. He did it so well that Beverly made a full recovery, with no brain damage. "He did a great job because he broke my ribs, and that kept me alive," Beverly said. "They said that's a good sign of CPR."Beverly says Callum deserves all the accolades. During the 9-1-1 call, Callum told Gonzales that his mom was going to die. That's when Gonzales replied, "Listen you're going to be your mom's hero. We're going to help her, OK?" 1575

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As hospitals in San Diego County receive vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, a new concern is surfacing in the United Kingdom.A new COVID variant is reportedly infecting people rapidly and may be 70% more contagious than COVID-19. The new variant reportedly caused over 60% of infections in London this month alone.But there is good news, according to UC San Diego infectious disease expert Dr. Robert Schooley."It doesn't seem to be any more difficult to neutralize and should be responsive to the vaccines we're using,” Schooley told ABC 10News.RELATED: Britain hit with several travel bans over new coronavirus strainEven though there's no evidence yet of the new variant being deadlier than COVID-19, many European countries aren't taking any chances.
