Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says he’s concerned after seeing video of police using a stunning and arresting?a Milwaukee Bucks player Sterling Brown. The video is expected to be released soon, possible later this week. Police are reportedly bracing for backlash from the release of that video. This incident took place on the south side of Milwaukee in January. Police were called to a Walgreens because Brown was illegally parked across two handicap spaces. The officers say they tried to talk to Brown but had to deploy their stun guns to arrest him. Since that time, the arrest has been the subject of a police internal investigation."I have some of the same concerns that the chief has expressed over the video. I'm going to let the release of that speak for itself, but yes, I definitely have concerns after watching that video,” Barrett said. The mayor indicated that Police Chief Alfonso Morales had a similar reaction after seeing the video. Brown was not charged in the incident. However, he did receive a parking citation.  1089

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Joseph Webster was in his 20s when he was convicted for a first-degree murder he didn't commit. At 41 years old, the father of four is readjusting to his newly granted freedom.Webster was released on Tuesday after a Davidson County judge ruled to vacate his murder conviction. New DNA evidence and key witnesses with different accounts of the incident helped solidify the decision. It's the first time a person was exonerated of murder because of his innocence in Nashville, according to attorney Daniel Horwitz."It's unbelievable but believable," Webster said. "The truth will set you free. I just didn't know when."Webster was sentenced to life in prison 15 years ago for the beating death of Leroy Owens in 1998. Horwitz helped uncover new evidence alongside the Davidson County Criminal Review Unit that points to a different suspect.Webster always maintained his innocence and never wavered from his hope that one day he'd get out of prison."It's a rare entity within the district attorney's office. Wrongful convictions are fairly rare, but they do occur," Horwitz said.In early 2019, Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk said he would reopen the case after new testing revealed that Webster's DNA was not found on the murder weapon. The only witness in the case allegedly changed her story several times, and at times the testimony pointed to a different suspect. In late October, Webster's attorney announced that Funk had vacated his sentence after a reinvestigation by the Conviction Review board, which cleared the way for Webster's possible release."The Conviction Review Unit no longer has confidence in the conviction of Mr. Webster," the motion stated. "We recommend Mr. Webster's conviction be vacated and the charges against him dismissed."With the victim's family in the courtroom, the state said there was no other option but to free Webster.Seconds after he could walk free, Webster's mother and children swarmed him with hugs and tears. He said he's been laying low and hanging out with loved ones who helped keep his strength over the years.Webster said there are others in his position without a support system. He eventually wants to his use experience to speak to teenagers about life in prison and to stay out of trouble. In the meantime, he wants to reconnect with society and heal from years of emotional, mental and physical stress."I just want to see the other side, and I just want to be happy and enjoy life," he said.He spent part of his day Thursday trying to get a driver's license with his attorney. Webster wants to rent his own apartment, get a commercial driver's license, and start a trucking business with his children.Horwitz said there are currently no plans to pursue restitution, but he has started a GoFundMe to help raise money for Webster.Money raised above the goal will be donated to the Innocence Project. MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - A plaque honoring Marines killed in a military training crash that happened 50 years ago at MCAS El Toro was unveiled at MCAS Miramar Wednesday."Knowing answers has really allowed us to come together," the granddaughter of Maj. Walter Zytkewicz, who was in the crash, said tearfully.Dozens of family members traveled to MCAS Miramar, where the squadron now resides, for the dedication.Pati Davis Ruane traveled from Georgia and still remembers the crash."I was 7 years old and we lived on base at El Toro, we saw the black smoke, playing around outside and was like, 'Hey mom look!' and she was like, 'Oh it's just the crash crew practicing,'" Ruane said. It wasn't the crash crew. A C-130 was completing touch-and-go practices and crashed violently, ultimately killing four of the five Marines on board. Her father, K.C. Davis, was the only one who saw his kids grow up, "I remember my mom going to three funerals in one day."This journey started in January 2019. Johnathan Keene often visited his cousin's grave at Arlington National Cemetery."I go up to visit him twice a year, typically Memorial Day and Veteran's Day," said Davis. Keene was in the neighborhood, Jan. 15, on his way to pick up his wife from the airport, and noticed Zytkewicz's grave next to the grave of his cousin, Capt. Robert Walls. Zytkewicz was in the Marines, like his cousin, and died the day before Walls. He said that "grabbed" him.Up until that day, Keene knew his cousin died in a military crash, but it wasn't spoken of at the dinner table. He knew there must be a connection to the two men, so he started digging. He found three other Marines were on the same training flight July 30, 1970: Staff Sgt. Kenneth Davis, 1st Lt. Roger W. Mullins, and Cpl. Kenneth Metzdorf."Major Zytkewicz was two months away from retiring," Keene said, adding that Zytkewicz was studying to become a realtor.Keene said Metzdorf wasn't supposed to be on the flight but, "called his best friend and said 'hey could you go on this flight for me today?' So they switched and that cost him [his life]."Keene tracked down the redacted incident report and filled in the gaps with interviews from witnesses and Marines who knew the men on board."Witnesses say they waited too late to pull the plane out of the angle of attack and the plane hit, bounced, flipped upside down, hit again, bounced in the air, the left wing fell off, all four props fell off. The plane landed right in the middle of the air field. Flames and fuel streamed down the runway, they said it was basically a long stream of fuel and fire," he said.Keene was amazed to learn his cousin and Metzdorf walked through the flames following the crash, "the report listed 80 percent - 90 percent coverage of third degree burns. I can't even imagine how he walked out," he said.Mullins was killed on impact, found 50 yards from the plane with a broken leg. Walls, Zytkewicz and Metzdorf died days later from their injuries. Keene said Walls died from burns in his lungs.Davis passed away in 2013.The exact cause was redacted in the report but Keene believes the Marine Corps wants to preserve the honor of the pilot and protect his family."After the crash, the material that made up Marine Corps and Navy flight suits was changed. They thought it was a flame retardant material, unfortunately it burned and melted to their skin," he said.Keene hopes these difficult discoveries will fuel Marines' admiration. To keep their memories alive, Keene created a plaque with the team's names. The plaque sits on the wall just inside the entrance to the squadron's historical room."Every other Marine that goes through that squadron will see that plaque and realize there's five men that in some way or another touched their lives from either a safety stand-point or history and lineology of VMGR-352," Keene said. 3858

Months after COVID-19 forced an unprecedented global shutdown that set the stage for historic job losses, things are starting to go back to normal.Unemployment appears to be improving – at least at surface level. The monthly unemployment rate declined in May and the economy added an estimated 2.5 million jobs that month. But there’s a disparity these reports don’t highlight – what unemployment looks like right now for people of color. In May, unemployment was highest among Latinx workers, at 17.6%. In the same month, Black unemployment reached 16.8%, its highest level in a decade. Asian unemployment also rose in May, to 15%.You start to see disparities when you bring in white unemployment. In May, it dropped 2.5% to 12.4%. That’s the biggest monthly drop – and lowest monthly rate – of any group.Experts say career distribution can help explain some of the disparities. People of color fill a disproportionate number of jobs in retail and hospitality. Those jobs were some of the first to be cut as the new coronavirus spread. But people of color also fill a big portion of jobs like grocery clerks and cooks. Those jobs, which are considered “essential” right now, traditionally don’t pay much and have been considered most expendable in past economic downturns. With Black workers earning the lowest median income of any group in the United States, experts worry any cuts to the currently “essential” workforce would have a disproportionate impact.Beyond the pandemic, numbers show Black unemployment is consistently higher than white unemployment. There’s been progress, though. The gap has been narrowing since the great recession and reached a low point in late 2019. 1686
