SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A UC San Diego epidemiologist was named today to Time magazine's 2018 list of the 50 most influential people in health care.Dr. Steffanie Strathdee, associate dean of global health sciences at UCSD's School of Medicine, was recognized for her successful efforts last year to keep her husband, psychiatry professor Tom Patterson, from dying due to a drug-resistant bacterial infection the World Health Organization classifies as the world's deadliest.Strathdee urged the team of scientists and doctors to use an experimental treatment for the infection using bacteriophages -- small viruses that act as parasites to bacteria by infecting and neutralizing them."It's a great honor to be recognized for my efforts to bring phage therapy into the 21st century in North America, but it all started with my single-minded desire to save my husband's life, and it truly reflects a team effort," Strathdee said.The magazine's list honors people who "have changed the state of healthcare in America this year, and bear watching for what they do next."Patterson was the first American patient with a systemic infection to receive bacteriophage treatment, according to Robert "Chip" Schooley, the lead doctor on Patterson's treatment team. UCSD Health doctors have since treated five more patients with bacteriophages. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities put out a call Monday for any additional alleged victims of a 35-year-old man accused of running a loan sharking scheme primarily targeting Latinos in San Diego County.FBI agents and Escondido police detectives arrested Hamze Mohamad Karnib, who goes by Alex Karnib, Thursday at his San Marcos home on suspicion of extortion and making criminal threats, FBI spokeswoman Davene Butler said.Karnib allegedly targeted Latinos and demanded repayment well above the amounts borrowed by his victims, Butler said. He then allegedly intimidated and threatened borrowers who couldn't meet his demands.He was being held in lieu of ,000 pending arraignment, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 8, according to jail records."Threatening and criminal behavior that targets the Latino or any other members of our community will not be tolerated," San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con who opened fire in the Gaslamp District two years ago, wounding an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a bystander, was sentenced Wednesday to 71 years to life in state prison.Ray Pitoau, 39, was convicted last month of two counts of assault with a firearm for the Aug. 7, 2017, shooting that injured Deputy Jason Philpot, who was walking through downtown with his two brothers following a Metallica concert at Petco Park. Also injured was bystander Vladimir Shvets, a passerby in San Diego for a convention.Pitoau was also convicted of a lesser charge of assault on the deputy's younger sibling, Joshua.Prosecutors said Philpot and his group walked past Pitoau, who got into an argument with the deputy's sibling on Island Avenue near Sixth Avenue just after 1 a.m.RELATED: Man convicted of assault with gun in Gaslamp shooting that wounded deputyPitoau testified that he pulled out a gun in self-defense because a group of men, including Jason Philpot, were advancing on him. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An SUV struck and killed a 63-year-old woman as she was crossing a street in the Talmadge area, police said Tuesday.It happened around 5 p.m. Monday in the 4600 block of El Cajon Boulevard, between 46th and 47th streets, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 79-year-old man was driving a 2008 Lexus SUV westbound on El Cajon Boulevard near Menlo Avenue when he struck the pedestrian as she was attempting to cross El Cajon Boulevard southbound outside a crosswalk, Buttle said.The woman was trapped under the SUV before crews freed her and took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the officer said. The victim's name was withheld pending family notification.The SUV driver remained at the scene and intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash, Buttle said. 824
