PARIS, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Legislative bodies of China and France launched their regular parliamentary exchange mechanism on Thursday, vowing to further push forward the Sino-French comprehensive strategic partnership.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, jointly declared the beginning of the first meeting of Sino-French Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.Wu said the launch of the high-level meeting between the two legislative bodies signals the Sino-French parliamentary exchanges were promoted to a new stage.Accoyer said the regular parliamentary exchange mechanism could serve as an important platform for both nations to exchange views on mutual concerns and promote bilateral cooperation in politics, technology, new energy and environmental protection.Ahead of the meeting, Wu and Accoyer held talks on bilateral ties and parliamentary cooperation.Accoyer said France attached great importance to Wu's visit as Wu is the first Chinese top legislator that visited France in 13 years.France regards China as a strategic partner, expecting to expand all-round strategic cooperation with China, boost coordination on international issues, through joint efforts against global financial crisis, climate change and other challenges, he said.Wu said his ongoing visit to France is aimed to build a closer relation between the Chinese NPC and the French National Assembly. He stressed that China will hold more dialogues and communications with France to enhance political mutual trust and boost the Sino- French economic cooperation.Earlier on the day, Wu held talks with French Senate President Gerard Larcher. The two leaders agreed that parliamentary exchange plays an important role in developing the Sino-French ties and enhancing mutual understanding between the two peoples.

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Overseas Chinese have held memorial meetings and other mourning activities recently to remember the victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China that killed at least 1,248 people.During a mourning ceremony on Sunday at a Chinese-language school in Christchurch, New Zealand, overseas Chinese nationals and students observed three minutes' silence for the victims and placed candles in the shape of a heart.Participants then made donations to the mudslide-hit areas, saying they were deeply concerned about those affected by the disaster.On the same day, some overseas Chinese and employees of Chinese companies and institutions in Serbia suspended entertainment activities voluntarily to express their condolences for the victims.In Jordan, people from various walks of life and overseas Chinese residing in the country have offered their sympathy and condolences.Overseas Chinese in Cambodia have called the Chinese embassy to express condolences, saying they are ready to donate for the reconstruction of the mudslide-hit region.The death toll from the Aug. 8 massive mudslide in Zhouqu county, northwest China's Gansu province, has risen to 1,248, with 496 still missing, local disaster relief headquarters said.China is observing a day of national mourning on Sunday, with national flags flying at half mast and all public entertainment activities suspended.

BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Growth of China's foreign exchange reserves are slowing as the total reached 2.4543 trillion U.S. dollars by the end of June, up 15.1 percent year on year, the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on Sunday.Statistics from the central bank show China's foreign exchange reserves increased by 7.2 billion U.S. dollars in the second quarter, a drastic decrease compared to the last quarter in 2009, when reserves grew by 126.5 billion U.S. dollars.Reserves in the first quarter increased by 47.9 billion U.S. dollars.The PBOC also said the declining euro was the major reason behind the slowing growth in foreign exchange reserves.The exchange rate between the euro and U.S. dollar had fallen by nearly 20 percent between the end of 2009 and May this year, according to the PBOC.China's basket of foreign exchange reserves include the U.S. dollar, euro, Japanese yen and others.On a monthly basis, reserves increased by 43.4 billion U.S. dollars in April followed by a reduction of 51 billion U.S. dollars in May, while June saw reserves increase by 14.8 billion U.S. dollars.China's gold reserves stood at 33.89 million ounces at the end of June, according to PBOC figures.

  

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong said on Thursday China would strive to set up a scientific and effective system for the protection of the country's intangible cultural heritage (ICH).Governments at all levels must take the initiative in safeguarding ICH and, incorporate it into the work agenda and assessment system of officials, said Liu at a ceremony awarding certifications for China's UNESCO ICHs in Beijing.She called for enacting related laws and regulations, as well as resolute measures to prevent the ravaging and destruction of ICHs by over-exploitation for economic purposes, such as tourism.She also called for more funding and international cooperation in safeguarding ICHs.China is a country with a rich cultural heritage. So far, a total of 29 cultural heritage categories have been included in the UNESCO ICH list.

  

BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) - The first Chinese language study program for foreign diplomats concluded on Saturday at Hanban, the executive body of the Chinese Language Council International.The program, which started on February 27 with a two-hour class every Saturday, had attracted 31 diplomats from 16 countries to China. The countries included Slovenia, Benin, Poland, Cameroon, Kenya, Nepal, Namibia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico, Afghanistan, and the Philippines."We have a lot to do in China and that makes us feel that it is necessary to learn Chinese. Not only have we learnt the Chinese language, we have also made friends with the dedicated teachers and volunteer students," said Tadeusz Chomicki, Polish Ambassador to China.During the 17-weeks of classes, the foreign diplomats learned how to greet others, shop and ask time in Chinese. They also had classes on Chinese culture, experienced the Peking opera, paper cutting, Chinese calligraphy, and shadow boxing."They were always keeping a very high spirit to learn in all weather," said Xu Lin, director-general of Hanban. "Their enthusiasm towards the Chinese language has moved us a lot," she added.Xu said Hanban had developed diversified methods such as open online classes and after-class online consulting, to help them learn Chinese better.To meet the demand of more foreign diplomats to learn Chinese, Hanban will launch the next Chinese language program in September, Xu said.
