BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Monks across China on Wednesday chanted prayers for the victims of the earthquake that struck northwest China's Qinghai Province in April, exactly 49 days after the deaths, which according to Buddhist belief marks the start of the souls' reincarnation. Major temples of the three main schools of Buddhism in China all held prayer rituals for the about 2,700 victims killed in the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Yushu on April 14, a statement from the Buddhist Association of China (BAC) said. About 1,000 Mahayana Buddhist monks attended the prayer session at Beijing's Guangji Temple led by Chuanyin, the BAC president, while the 11th Panchen Lama, the association's vice president, hosted another prayer session at the Lama Temple, an important Tibetan Buddhist temple in Beijing. In southwestern Yunnan Province, monks of Hinayana Buddhism gathered at the Zongfo Temple to pray. Other important temples in Shanxi, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Lhasa also held prayer rituals at the same time. The monks prayed for the victims' souls and for the survivors to overcome the hardships caused by the disaster. Xuecheng, BAC vice president and secretary general, presided over the prayer ritual at the Gyegu Monastery, the main temple in quake-hit Yushu. About 1,000 monks and local residents attended the prayer ritual at the massive cremation site for hundreds of Tibetan quake victims in Gyegu township. Many local residents arrived at the cremation site early in the morning, praying for the dead while turning prayer wheels. Some kowtowed in memory of the dead. "So many eminent monks and living Buddhas attended the prayer ritual and I believe my love is sure to enter the paradise," said Benma, who lost her husband in the quake. "Many good-hearted people have given us support and the monks have been praying day and night," she said. Xuecheng presented to local monks the 2.3 million yuan (338,000 U.S. dollars) raised by the BAC on April 16. According to the State Administration for Religious Affairs, religious circles had donated about 94.52 million yuan (13.72 million dollars) as of Tuesday, of which 70.45 million yuan came from Buddhists.

DONGXIANG, Jiangxi, May 23 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed in east China's Jiangxi Province when a passenger train derailed after being hit by landslides at Sunday dawn, railway authorities said. The train, bound for the tourist city of Guilin in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from Shanghai, derailed at around 2:10 a.m. in Dongxiang county, Fuzhou city in Jiangxi, the Ministry of Railways said in a press release. At least ten passengers were injured.Xinhua reporters who rushed to the scene saw the locomotive, plus eight of the 17 carriages of the train -- coded K859 -- derailed and some even overturned in the mountainous area of Jiangxi. One carriage was twisted and crushed on the other. Rescuers work at the site where a passenger train derailed in Dongxiang County, east China's Jiangxi Province, May 23, 2010. At least three people were killed, 10 more injured in Dongxiang when a passenger train derailed after being hit by landslides at Sunday dawn, authorities said"Each of the train carriages has 118 seats. It is not yet immediately known how many passengers were on board," said a police officer surnamed Luo, who was from the Railway Bureau in Nanchang, Jiangxi provincial capital. He said the bureau has called for all of its four legal medical experts to the accident site to help identify the dead."We are afraid the casualty may soon rise, as four of the derailed train cars were severely deformed in the accident," he said.Xinhua reporters saw rescuers using cutting equipment to open an entrance in order to get into one of the derailed carriage. A locomotive has arrived to help pull up the carriages.A rescue official surnamed Yu said hundreds of armed police, firemen and soldiers are trying to rescue those who remained trapped inside the train.More than a dozen ambulances were parked along the tracks.Rescuers told Xinhua at least 20 injured passengers were saved. Four in serious conditions were rushed to hospital.Trains on the Shanghai-Kunming railway were halted after the accident.Minister of Railways Liu Zhijun has ordered all-out efforts to save lives, to restore the railway transport and to launch a thorough investigation of the cause of the accident. [ Governor of Jiangxi Wu Xinxiong arrived at Dongxiang early Sunday morning to direct the rescue operations. Most parts of Jiangxi, along with neighboring provinces, were drenched by heavy rains in the past few days. SEOUL, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit here, starting Friday, will strongly boost the friendly cooperative relationship between China and South Korea, Chinese ambassador Zhang Xinsen told Xinhua in a recent interview.Zhang said Wen's second official trip to South Korea after previously visiting in April 2007 would allow him to exchange views with South Korean leaders on further deepening the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries. He would also have extensive contacts with various sectors here, which would surely boost the bilateral ties and bear richer fruit in the future. The ambassador said, as good neighbors, China and South Korea had made joint efforts to achieve rapid and all-round development of the bilateral ties since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992. In 2008, Chinese President Hu Jintao and his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak successfully exchanged visits and upgraded relations between the two sides to a strategic cooperative partnership. Since then, the exchanges and cooperation between the two countries' various fields have been further deepened.Multi-level communication channels, covering government agencies, parliaments, academic sectors and media, had been established, and high-level exchanges between the two sides also remained frequent, the ambassador said. The two sides also maintained good communication and coordination on issues such as trilateral cooperation among China, Japan and South Korea, integration of East Asia and global climate change under various bilateral and multilateral frameworks, and reached consensus on further strengthening the strategic cooperative partnership, maintaining peace and stability in the region and expanding cooperation in international affairs, he said.In the economic and trade field, two-way cooperation had been broadened and enhanced, Zhang said, noting that China was the largest trade partner, export destination country and import market for South Korea, while the latter was the third biggest trade partner for China. The two countries also worked closely when the world was hit by the global financial crisis, Zhang said, citing the bilateral currency swap accord involving some 28 billion U.S. dollars, in an effort to safeguard regional and global financial stability.Meanwhile, the active people-related exchanges also contributed to deepening mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, the ambassador said. This year, during which China is hosting World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, and 2012, in which a similar event will be hosted in South Korea's southern city of Yeosu, were designated as Visit China Year and Visit Korea Year, respectively. More than one million South Koreans are expected to travel to China to visit the Shanghai Expo, and the South Korean Pavilion has become one of the most popular pavilions, Zhang said.China and South Korea, both important countries in Asia and in a crucial stage of development, had a broad prospect of cooperation, the ambassador said.Since uncertainties remained in the global economy, both China and South Korea were adopting effective measures to oppose trade and investment protectionism, accelerate the process of establishing a free trade area between the two countries, and enhance cooperation in finance, green growth and other major fields, he said.Morever, the two counties should continue to play positive roles in trilateral cooperation among China, Japan and South Korea, and multilateral collaboration under the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) plus three, and should also actively take part in building new structure and new order of the regional and global economy and finance.Zhang said he believed that, thanks to joint efforts by the two countries in further deepening mutual trust, enhancing friendship and strengthening cooperation, the strategic cooperative partnership between the two sides would surely achieve greater development.
