SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man is in custody after a chase ended in a standoff with police at a Mission Bay Motel Sunday morning. Police say the chase started just before 9 a.m. at the A-1 Storage on Garnett Avenue after officers received a citizens' tip. The suspect driving a U-Haul truck led police on a short chase to the 4300 block of Mission Bay Drive near Roadway in San Diego.According to police, the man is wanted on felony weapons charges. After the chase ended, a woman in the passenger seat was detained while the driver ran into the nearby motel. The woman was later released. While searching for the suspect throughout the motel, officers learned that the man broke through several walls to try and escape. “This guy starts forcing himself into apartments, and now we have to deal with a possible hostage situation. That’s the reason why we brought so many resources down here. We wanted to get this guy into custody as fast as we can," Lt. Christian Sharp with the San Diego Police Department said. Eventually, police had to use chemical gas and a K-9 to apprehend the suspect, who has yet to be identified.  1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local father is recovering from stab wounds after getting attacked by an intruder in his home. The man's 20-year-old son shot and killed that intruder according to San Diego Police. It happened just before 6:30 Tuesday morning at a home in the 6300 block of Lake Shore Drive in San Carlos. Neighbors heard the violence. "I heard the gunshots, it was like three or four gunshots, then screams for help immediately after," said Denise Rolla. When police got to the home, they found the suspect dead in the pool and the 54-year-old homeowner with stab wounds to the upper body. Police say the homeowner's son shot and killed the intruder, who stumbled out the back and landed in the pool. "I heard what turned out to be the suspect fall into the pool and then a couple minutes later, you could see the blood start to spread out through the pool," said Andrew Grogg, who lives right next door. There are walking paths and Mission Trails Golf Course is located behind the homes which are just southwest of Jackson Drive. Neighbors say they don't have a problem with transients in the area, but police say so far, it appears the 38-year-old suspect is homeless. His name hasn't been released. The family owns a tire shop in La Mesa. They are well known and liked in the community. "They're local business owners in the community. They're great neighbors. They're kind, they're nice," said Grogg. Police say so far, the attack appears to be random. 1472

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report says San Diego Unified School District is losing nearly million a year due to the exploding number of charter schools.School districts receive funding per student. The report by the organization, In the Public Interest, found SDUSD loses nearly ,913 a year per charter school student, largely due to costs that cannot be reduced when a student goes to a charter school. SDUSD is the second-largest district in California.There are about 120 charter schools in San Diego County. Roughly 50 of those schools are in the SDUSD. Elva Barajas’ son attends a local charter school.“I liked what they were offering for the students. There were smaller classrooms… less than 25 kids in the classroom. It was more individualized for the students,” Barajas said.Miriam Rodriguez’s daughters go to traditional schools within SDUSD.“At the end of the day, the schools are in my community,” Rodriguez said.The report, called "Breaking Point: The Cost of Charter Schools to Public School District," analyzed three California school districts including San Diego.Superintendent Cindy Marten and SDUSD trustee Richard Barrera argued that local districts need more control over school charter decisions. Barrera said district leaders need to ask critical questions, including fiscal impact. Currently, he said they are not allowed to do so.“What is it bringing to the table, what is it adding to the mix of schools… but also, what is it taking away?” Barrera said.Michelle Anderson, Regional Manager for the California Charter Schools Association, said districts already have enough oversight. “This is really a misrepresentation of issues that came through from a report that was paid for by special interests. Charter schools are really not the bad guys in this issue,” Anderson said.Both sides agree that education funding goes beyond this particular issue, although they differ in the impact of charter schools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new study says that Millennials are leaving their jobs mainly because they're looking for more meaning in what they do.The study, by the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, found that 51.9% of Millennials say they're thinking of leaving their job in the next six months.Of the ones who felt that way, their main reason for wanting to leave is a lack of meaning or purpose in their current job."They want to understand exactly what product or service their company provides and how it makes their community better," says Chamber VP of Research Sean Kerafin, who wrote the study."They can't find all of their value in a job simply from a paycheck," Kerafin says. "They have to understand the bigger picture."Kerafin says that's an essential lesson for local employers to know since Millennials make up 39.7% of the workforce. That's more than any other generation.Kerafin says companies need to emphasize a culture that is "Purpose-Driven" over one that prioritizes profit if they want to attract and retain Millennials.Other findings in the study, which is based on interviews with 400 Millennials in San Diego, show that they want to work for a company where there is an opportunity to grow from within.The survey found that 22% of Millennials cite professional development as a top driver of satisfaction, compared to just 5.8% who cite office perks."They come from a generation of participation trophies and being told they can do anything they put their mind to, and they believe it," Kerafin says. "The truth is they can if they're supported."Kerafin says companies that have excellent mentoring and development programs are more likely to keep Millennials around longer.The study also found that 65.3% of Millennials are satisfied with their job. But even that may not be enough to keep them in San Diego.According to the survey, 44% of Millennials are "very likely" to leave San Diego in the next two years. They say a lack of affordable housing is the main reason.The Chamber says local government leaders can help businesses by incentivizing more housing. 2087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man who groped and sexually assaulted four female students as they walked to their off-campus housing near SDSU pleaded guilty Monday.Minda Shewangizaw, 20, pleaded guilty to charges including felony and misdemeanor counts of false imprisonment and sexual battery.All four victims in the case, who ranged in age from 17 to 19, testified during the preliminary hearing.One of the victims said she and her roommate were walking home after midnight when Shewangizaw came up behind her and “grabbed her butt.RELATED: Women testify against UC Riverside student accused of groping near San Diego State”Her roommate said she noticed someone walking behind them before he began to chase them. "I said, You need to leave. He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward him. He pulled my shirt down and grabbed my breast."She said she kicked Shewangizaw and was able to break free.Another victim testified that she and another woman were on a pedestrian bridge heading back to their dorm when she heard footsteps and was smacked on her “behind” by Schewangizaw."I was livid. I said, What are you doing? Don't do that! He laughed it off."She said she kept walking when the defendant made a remark about her breasts before pulling her shirt down and putting his hands on her chest.A witness said Shewangizaw then grabbed her breast and buttocks and trapped her against a rail before laughing and walking away.The sentencing is scheduled for June 12. 1460
