BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic air travelers, as well as international passengers in and out of China, will be the biggest boost to airline industry growth over the next four years, according to an industry outlook report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Monday.Of the world's expected 800 million new travelers by 2014, about 181 million new passengers will come from China's domestic air routes, while another 33 million will be passengers flying to or from China via international routes, IATA said.China's 181 million domestic air passengers growth will lift the country's domestic passenger throughput to 379 million by 2014, only behind the United States in the world's aviation traveler volume ranking, according to IATA.The United States will remain the largest single country market for domestic passengers, with 671 million domestic air travelers and international passengers by then, according to IATA's forecast. The world's air travelers will top 3.3 billion by 2014, up by 800 million from the 2.5 billion in 2009, while world air cargo will rise to 38 million tonnes from 26 million tonnes in 2009."The forecast indicates that the world will continue to become more mobile. This creates enormous opportunities but also presents some challenges," Giovanni Bisignani, IATA' s Director General and CEO, said in the outlook report."We will need even more efficient air traffic management, airport facilities and security programs," he said, adding the shadow of the global economic recession is expected to remain over parts of the industry for some time to come.He said lingering consumer debt, high unemployment and austerity measures will dampen growth rates in Europe and North America, shifting the industry's focus eastwards.By 2014, 1 billion people will travel by air in the Asia-Pacific region, accounting for 30 percent of the global total, up from 26 percent in 2009, he added.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Computer sales declined in the first three months of this year for the first time since 2009 worldwide.PC sales fell 1.1 percent in the first quarter to 84.3 million worldwide, according to tech research firm Gartner Wednesday, well short of its forecast for 3 percent growth. The dip was the first since the second quarter of 2009, when most of the world was still in the grip of economic turmoil."Although the first quarter is traditionally a slow one for PC sales, these shipment results indicate potential sluggishness, not just a normal seasonal slowdown," said Gartner, in a statement.Consumers select IT products at an IT fair named "Sham Shui Po computer festival" in Hong Kong, south China, Feb. 15, 2011. The eight-day IT fair kicked off here Monday. Some 600,000 people are predicted to visit the fair.Weak demand for consumer PCs was the biggest drag on the market, according to Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa."Low prices for consumer PCs, which had long stimulated growth, no longer attracted buyers," Kitagawa said."Instead, consumers turned their attention to media tablets and other consumer electronics."After Apple's second-generation iPad was released in February, many consumers either switched allegiances or simply held back from buying PCs, according to the analyst.Japan was a particularly weak spot, with PC sales falling 13 percent in the quarter, as people focused on getting back to normal after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami rather than spending money on new technology.

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's central government on Wednesday called on local authorities to step up efforts to ensure a stable market supply of daily necessities, such as food and clothing, as freezing weather continues to plague south and southwest China. The Ministry of Commerce required local government departments to guide companies to increase supplies such as rice, edible oil, meat and vegetables. It also required local departments to closely watch market changes and release reserves of commodities when necessary, said a statement on its website. The statement said the government of southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has urged local supermarkets to maintain the prices of 10 types of vegetables that are affordable to the public, while authorities in the rain and snow-battered Guizhou and Hunan provinces guided logistics companies and wholesales markets to take measures to insure supplies. The Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday also ordered local departments to expand areas for growing vegetables when conditions allow, as agricultural experts were also sent to fields to help farmers save their crops. The country's meteorological authority forecast Wednesday that over the next three days, heavy snow and icy rain would continue in provinces and municipalities including Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Chongqing.

TOKYO, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Traces of radioactive iodine had been detected in Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto region, according to the results of an investigation of radioactivity in precipitation and dust conducted by the government, local media reported on Sunday.Radioactive iodine was found in Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Yamanashi, Tochigi and Gunma prefectures, the Kyodo News said, citing the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The ministry added that the levels detected in the investigation alone would not affect human health. An employee of Yamagata city office holds a Geiger counter to detect radiation when evacuees from the vicinity of Fukushima nuclear plant wish to be screened upon their arrival at an evacuation centre set in a gymnasium in Yamagata, northern Japan March 19, 2011, eight days after Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami. The investigation was carried out following the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the government said Sunday. The ministry said that a separate research has already shown that radioactive materials in the air and tap water in Tokyo and the five prefectures pose no threat to human health, according to Kyodo News report.
