PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - Chris Nikic has officially set a new Guinness World Record. He’s the first athlete with Down syndrome to complete a full triathlon.Nikic finished Saturday’s 2.4-mile swim, 122-mile bike and 26.2-mile run in 16 hours, 46 minutes and nine seconds. He needed to complete the race in 17 hours to earn the title of Ironman.21-year-old Nikic, who lives in Maitland, Florida, says he didn’t let any obstacles come in his way despite being stung by fire ants and falling off his bicycle.“I decided to get back up and fight my way through,” he explained.Dan Grieb, Chris’ coach, was there by his side throughout the entire race. “He woke up as a boy with Down syndrome and went to bed an Ironman,” Dan explained Monday morning while packing up his bags to leave Panama City Beach.Grieb recalled a conversation he had with Nik Nikic, Chris’ dad, moments before the race. “I told his dad ‘Nik, you’ve done an amazing job with your boy for 21 years. Just give him to me for 17 hours and I promise I’ll return to you an Ironman. The greatest honor of my life was keeping that promise,” Grieb said with a smile.Nikic’s story has been an inspiration all across the world. Several parents of children with Down syndrome have reached out to the 21-year-old athlete through social media.“They say that I’m a hero,” Nikic said.“For everyone else like him around the world, it has been unbelievable,” Grieb added.Sherry Wheelock, the President of Special Olympics Florida says Nikic is proving that anything is possible. That goal was to improve by 1% every day and it’s something Chris Nikic took to heart.His next goal is to participate in the Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando in 2022. More than two years ago, students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School turned their grief and anguish into activism after their school tragedy.Many of those students who were part of that movement are voting in their first presidential election."I was very proud to vote," said Buchwald.Buchwald and Hibshman are now Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School alumni. They were juniors in 2018 when a gunman opened fire in Building 12 at the school, killing 17 people."[The shooting] still brings moments of fear and sadness back," said Hibshman. After the Parkland school shooting in 2018, Zach Hibshman and Adam Buchwald started the group "Parents Promise to Kids" to push for stricter gun laws. "Before the shooting, this wouldn't be part of my everyday life. I wouldn’t be an activist. I'd be a normal kid doing my homework and studying for the ACT," Zach said more than two years ago.They pushed to bring about change in the wake of tragedy, starting the group "Parents Promise to Kids."The movement called on people to sign a contract pledging to vote for politicians who support stricter gun laws."[The group] exploded across the country, and we got so many signatures," said Buchwald.But something was missing at the time leading up to the midterm-elections nearly two years ago. They were too young to vote."That was one of the things Adam and I so desperately wanted to do," said Hibshman. "The fact that we couldn't share our thoughts through the form of a ballot, after we went through all that, was pretty frustrating."Hibshman and Buchwald are now sophomores at the University of Florida and eligible to vote.The memory of the 17 people killed at their former school is on their minds as they cast their ballots."Definitely going to think about gun control," said Hibshman."The topic of gun control is extremely important, but so is COVID," said Buchwald.Finally, they can make their voices heard on a ballot.Buchwald has now started a new movement with his brother, Josh, called "Promise to Humanity." MIDVALE, Utah — Just one night after its statue of St. Therese was smashed, a Catholic church in Midvale had one of its parish residences broken into Monday night.The iconic statue in front of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church was pushed off its pedestal Sunday night, which resulted in the statue's head breaking off.
