(CNS) - Orange County supervisors Tuesday voted to declare Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day.Bryant was born on Aug. 23 and wore the number 24 in his playing days, said Orange County Board Chairwoman Michelle Steel, explaining why she settled on Aug. 24 as the date to honor the former Lakers great who died Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash that also killed his daughter and seven others.Bryant also wore the number 8 during his first several seasons in the NBA.Steel said Bryant, who lived in Newport Beach, was a "treasured member of our community," who "inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up."Supervisor Don Wagner, in an apparent reference to Bryant's 2003 sexual assault civil case in Colorado, which Bryant ultimately settled, said the former NBA star had his ups and downs in his lifetime."Kobe Bryant's life, like each one of us who ever lived, presents moments to celebrate and to condemn," Wagner said. (KGTV) - NOAA has issued a La Nina Watch, which means a dry winter and longer fire season are possible this year for Southern California.This stems from colder water along the equator in the Pacific which has a domino effect on other parts of the world, including an increased risk of hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean due to weaker winds and also higher chances for a dry winter over Southern California because of a lack of moisture. A lack of winter rain means the fire season could be longer than usual.“So that means we enter the fall critically dry and then when you add a La Nina on top of that, it adds concern because we could likely go longer into the winter without seeing significant or beneficial rain,” said meteorologist Alex Tardy from the National Weather Service’s San Diego office.He said it’s not quite black and white though. According to the NOAA, there's about a 50% to 55% chance of a La Nina occurring this year, which will be monitored as the winter season approaches. Also, in the past 10-15 years, La Nina years and El Nino years have proven to be not as extreme as previously thought. The Board of Supervisors voted 10-1 Tuesday to approve the ordinance making San Francisco the largest city in the country to ban tobacco smoking inside apartments, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.The original proposal sought to ban residents from smoking marijuana in their apartments. But supervisors voted to exclude marijuana after cannabis activists said the law would take away their only legal place to smoke. “Unlike tobacco smokers who could still leave their apartments to step out to the curb or smoke in other permitted outdoor smoking areas, cannabis users would have no such legal alternatives,” said Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, who wrote the amendment to exempt cannabis.It’s illegal under state law to smoke cannabis in public places.San Francisco now joins 63 California cities and counties with such a ban.The ordinance must pass a second vote of the board next week and the mayor must sign it. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two men used semi-automatic handguns to rob a T-Mobile store Tuesday afternoon, according to San Diego Police. Police say the incident happened around 12:40 p.m. at the T-Mobile store on the 4300 block of Camino De La Plaza. The men reportedly walked into the store wearing white masks before taking several phones and fleeing the scene in what police describe as a four-door subcompact vehicle. Police were unable to find the suspects after setting up a perimeter and searching the area. Detectives are investigating the incident. 569

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a California community college instructor with ties to the far-right extremist "boogaloo" movement is in custody on suspicion of sending misogynistic and threatening letters to a county health officer involving the pandemic. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday that deputies arrested 55-year-old Alan Viarengo and seized 138 firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition from his home in Gilroy. Viarengo is charged with felony counts of stalking and threatening a public official. Dr. Sara Cody, the health officer for Santa Clara County, has been one of the nation's most visible proponents of social distancing and wearing masks.
