CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- China will not compromise on issues of principle at the ongoing UN climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico, the country's chief negotiator said on Saturday.Su Wei, the chief Chinese negotiator and head of the climate change department of China's National Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks in response to some parties' call for "compromise to make achievements.""All the parties want to reach substantial achievements at the Cancun conference, which can lay a solid foundation for the completion of 'Bali Roadmap' negotiations," Su told Xinhua in an exclusive interview."I think we can cooperate with other parties and even make compromises on some non-principle issues, but we will not compromise on the issues of principle, such as the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, which is the basis for a package of agreements to be made in Cancun," Su said.The negotiator stressed that the developing countries have reached consensus on the principle issues. "We are keeping solidarity and trying to play a constructive role," he added.Su said some country's opposition to the Kyoto Protocol is no good news to the developing countries, and has exerted negative influence on the conference.Negotiators at the Cancun conference are trying to establish a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges rich nations except the United States to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-2012."At the end of the first week of the Cancun conference, there are some progresses in adaptation, finance, technology and mitigation for the developing countries, but it is hard to say if the progresses are final ones," Su observed.As for the rumors about a secret Mexican text, Su said that the president of COP16 has told the delegations from every country including China that Mexico will not put forward a secret text."As I know, Mexico, the host country of COP16, is always pursuing the principles of 'open, transparent and widening participation' for the climate negotiations this year. I believe Mexico will continue to keep the principles to try to get the results of balance at the Cancun Conference," he said.Su noted that the ministers will arrive in Cancun in the second week of the conference. He hopes the ministers can play an active role in promoting the progress of the conference.A 70-strong-member delegation of the Chinese government, headed by Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, is cooperating with other parties to seek a solution to global warming in Cancun.The Cancun talks, from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10, are aimed at finding solutions to global climate change. It has attracted about 25,000 participants from governments, businesses, nongovernmental organizations and research institutions in nearly 200 countries. 

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China said it will make greater efforts to start six-party emergency consultations because tensions on the Korean Peninsula have not eased."The six-party talks are a very important way to advance the denuclearization process on the Korean Peninsula and maintain peace and stability in northeast Asia. We, the concerned parties, should make full use of the talks," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said in an interview in Beijing Friday.Launched in 2003 and stalled since the end of 2008, the six-party talks involve China, Russia, the United States, Japan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK)."While the talks have yet to be resumed, we think it is the proper time for emergency consultations between the heads of the delegations of the six parties," said the foreign minister.Tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula after the DPRK and the ROK exchanged artillery fire on Nov. 23. China proposed emergency consultations among the chief negotiators in December.Amid the international community's repeated calls for restraint and calm, the United States held separate large-scale naval drills with the ROK and Japan in waters near the peninsula."We will continue to make patient efforts to persuade the parties to engage in consultations," Yang said.He said the tensions on the peninsular will ease "only if all the parties show their sincerity and make joint efforts.""Stability on the Korean Peninsula is good for all. GENEVA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- It is time for the Doha Development Round to begin to center around the Chair-led multilateral process and to come up with a revised text, Sun Zhenyu, the Chinese ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO), said on Tuesday at a WTO Trade Negotiation Committee meeting."Time is not with us," Sun said, stressing the need to "plan wisely" in the year ahead to seize the window of opportunity in 2011, which is recognized by both G20 and APEC leaders in early November.Sun commended progress generated from the "Cocktail Approach," which is made up of small-group informal discussions and brainstorming among the ambassadors, carried out throughout the last few months.The brainstorming "paves way for possible progress in quite a few areas such as development, rules and dispute settlement," the Chinese ambassador said."But after all, the brainstorming is not and could not replace negotiating sessions," he added, calling for intensified engagements to deliver the revised texts at the earliest time."One of the major achievements of the G20 Summit in Seoul is that leaders reaffirmed their strong commitment to the DDA and directed us as negotiators to engage in across-the-board negotiations to promptly bring the Doha Development Round to a conclusion," the Chinese ambassador said."Across-the-board trade-offs could have a better chance when we have the texts on the table," Sun noted.He also reiterated the stance on honoring the leaders' instructions through "respecting the mandate" and "building on the progress already achieved," in order to achieve a balanced and ambitious outcome.In his speech, Sun gave priority to development as the top outcome of the Doha Round."Above everything, it has to be development-oriented," he said, giving a clear message that China is in favor of addressing the concerns of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Vulnerable Economies (SVEs) as a priority.
