BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Monday sent a message of condolence to his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev over the forest fires that have killed more than 50 people in Russia. In his message, Hu, on behalf of the Chinese government and the people, conveyed to Medvedev his profound condolences for the victims and sincere sympathies to the families of those killed in the blazes.Hu said at this critical moment, the Chinese people are feeling the same as the Russian people do. China is willing to offer emergency disaster aid to Russia and support the Russians in fighting the wildfires. He said he believes that the Russian government and the people, under the leadership of Medvedev, will overcome this natural disaster of exceptional magnitude and rebuild their homes at an early date.Meanwhile, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday sent a condolence message to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin over the deadly wildfires.Local media reported Sunday that areas under fire in central Russia has increased to 190,000 hectares and a total of 564 wildfire scenes were detected across Russia, as the country endured its hottest summer on record.

NANJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The population of China, the world's most populous country, is projected to reach 1.39 billion by the end of 2015, with those age 60 or over topping 200 million people, said Li Bin, head of the country's top population policy agency.Li, director of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, released these estimates Saturday during a speech at the annual conference of the China Population Association in Nanjing, capital city of east China's Jiangsu Province. The urban population is projected to be over 700 million over the next five years, for the first time exceeding the rural population, according to Li.She said the increase in the next five years would be based upon the nation's population momentum, which, according to her, would begin to decline after 2015.Population momentum is the tendency of a highly fertile population that has been rapidly increasing in size to continue to do so for decades after the onset of even a substantial decline in fertility.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded. To put a hold on the fast growth, the Chinese government adopted a one-child policy in the late 1970s. The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.However, during the next five years the development of China's population is expected to go through major transitional changes, Li said.China's first boom in its aging population is expected in the next five years, with roughly an average of eight million people turning 60 each year, 3.2 million more than occurred between 2006 and 2010, she said.In the coming five years, the ratio of the population aged 15 to 59 would peak and then slowly fall, whereas the population dependency ratio, a measure of the proportion of the population too young or too old to work, would rise for the first time after over 40 years of decreasing. In general, China would still retain the advantage of a plentiful labor supply and a relatively low population dependency ratio, she said.

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Expo 2010 Shanghai is proving to be a boon for successful Chinese entrepreneurs eager to tap into the global market. The 184-day event, which is predicted to attract an estimated 4 million foreign visitors along with global media coverage, is considered to be a golden opportunity for Chinese companies to raise their brands to an international level and explore business opportunities.According to survey released last year by the information office of Shanghai Municipal Government, more than a quarter of the respondents were hoping to visit Shanghai during the Expo to seek future business. The online survey polled 503 foreigners in 44 countries and regions across the world, 30 percent of whom were senior corporate executives.Of the Expo's 58 partners and official sponsors, 47 are Chinese companies, 25 are from Shanghai, 15 are from Beijing and seven from other parts of the country. They contributed a total of more than 7 billion yuan ( billion) in sponsorship fees to the event, averaging more than 100 million each. While the sums are large, the contributors represent only a small portion of the number Chinese firms that want a slice of the Expo pie. Those who are not qualified to partner an official sponsor have sought other means of gaining brand exposure."The Expo is a once-in-a-century opportunity for us to promote our brand on an international scale," said Zhang Yingguang, a public relations manager for Tsingdao Beer, the Chinese industry leader based in Qingdao, Shandong province. The company launched a flurry of billboard advertisements on the city's busiest streets, as well as in metro stations and commercial areas. The ads targeted foreigners by trying to teach them Chinese phrases about drinking. It also made a presence in the Zero Carbon Pavilion at the Expo, where it contributed lamps made out of beer bottles and launched a gourmet TV show with a local TV station.

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China strongly opposes a declaration issued by the European Union on a Chinese human rights case, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here Sunday.Qin made the remarks in response to a question on China's attitude towards the EU declaration. The EU said in its declaration that it regrets the decision of the higher people's court of Sichuan Province to confirm the sentence of Tan Zuoren to five years in prison for "subversion of state power."It also appeals to the Chinese government to release Tan unconditionally.Tan Zuoren, a former magazine editor, was sentenced in February on the charge of inciting subversion of state power. This week, the Sichuan provincial higher people's court upheld Tan's five-year prison term.Qin said, China's justice department handled the case independently according to the Chinese law.The EU declaration has interfered in China's judicial affairs," Qin said. "China firmly opposes and is strongly dissatisfied over it."Qin hoped the EU would respect China's judicial sovereignty and safeguard the overall situation of Sino-EU relations.
