A North Carolina college student has been arrested and charged after authorities found two guns in his dorm room and he reportedly confessed to plans to carry out a shooting.Paul Arnold Steber, a 19-year-old freshman at High Point University, faces two felony counts of weapons on campus or educational property and one count of making a threat of mass violence, High Point Police said. He's being held without bond for 10 days, during which time he must have a mental evaluation, police said.Steber's attorney did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.Steber, of Boston, is one of dozens of suspects arrested over mass attack threats since mass shootings this month in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. In the week after the shootings, the FBI got more than 38,000 tips, up from the typical 22,000 tips per week this year.Steber was arrested Tuesday after other students told school officials that Steber had two guns and ammunition in his dorm room, police and university officials said in news releases.Steber had a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and a double-barrel 12-gauge shotgun, police said.He confessed to having "a timeline to 'kill people,'" 1176

A mother has been arrested and charged after workers at a day care center in Sandusky, Ohio, found bruises on her 4-year-old child. Loryn Smith, 21, was arrested after daycare workers at Kiddie Korral noticed her 4-year-old son had visible injuries on his body, according Sandusky police. On Wednesday, after the boy arrived at the daycare center, staff members noticed he had two visible bruises on his left arm. When asked where the bruises came from, the boy told staff they came from his mother, police said. The boy told daycare staff that Smith had struck him multiple times with a belt and a shoe and asked for an ice pack for his injuries. The workers then took the boy into a private room and asked him where he was in pain. He showed them bruises, scratches, swelling and several superficial lacerations on his legs and arms, according to police. Staff at Kiddie Korral then contacted Erie County Children's Services. After further investigation into the boy’s injuries, bruises, welts and superficial lacerations were found on his legs, buttocks and lower back. Purple and red bruises were found on the boy's thigh, hip and inner groin. The boy told Children's Services that he had been hit “a lot” by Smith and that she has told him to “stop being bad,” according to police. Children's Services staff told daycare workers the boy would not be released to Smith and he was transported to a nearby hospital due to the pain he was in. After locating Smith, she told police that she did hit her son but that it was disciplinary. Smith was arrested and charged with endangering children, felonious assault and domestic violence. Police transported Smith to the Erie County Jail where she is currently being held. 1731

An American was possibly exposed to Ebola while recently providing medical assistance in Congo, according to a release from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health. The person, who has not been identified, is headed to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for monitoring, the release states, adding the Nebraska Medical Center is home to one of the nation's few dedicated biocontainment units."This person may have been exposed to the virus but is not ill and is not contagious," said Ted Cieslak, infectious diseases specialist with Nebraska Medicine and associate professor of epidemiology in the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health. "Should any symptoms develop, the Nebraska Medicine/UNMC team is among the most qualified in the world to deal with them."The Democratic Republic of Congo is going through one of the deadliest Ebola outbreaks in history. The outbreak began August 1 and has left more than 300 people dead, with 545 confirmed cases recorded as of Saturday, according to the country's health ministry. Another 48 cases are considered probable. The World Health Organization said protests in Congo over election delays and a deteriorating security situation are interfering with their field teams' ability to carry out Ebola vaccinations in some areas. The American, the Nebraska release states, is not an official patient and is being taken privately to the medical center. Federal, state and county public health officials plan to monitor the person in a secure area not accessible by the public or any patients. Monitoring could take as long as two weeks, the release states. No updates will be given on the person's status during the monitoring period unless needed, the release also states. If it is necessary, though, the individual will be transferred to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, where regular updates will be provided. This isn't the first time possible Ebola patients were treated at the Nebraska Medical Center. Nebraska Medicine treated three patients with Ebola in 2014. In 2015, five Americans were monitored at the center after being exposed to the virus in West Africa, but none developed the disease. 2234
