NEW YORK, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- A video show about Chinese people made its debut on screens at Times Square on Monday, presenting Americans a multi-dimensional and vivid image of Chinese people. With China's traditional red as the theme color, the 60-second video was shown on six screens simultaneously at Times Square with a billboard written "Experience China" on top of the screens. The show highlights Chinese ordinary people and some important figures recognized by the international community, including Chinese pianist Lang Lang, basketball player Yao Ming and Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei, etc."The layout of the video is quite smart. I like it," Charlotte Mcguckin, 18, a high school student in New York, told Xinhua, adding that "everyone (in the video) looks happy.""Look, that's Yao Ming. I can recognize him, and also the female table tennis player standing beside him. She is very famous, " she said, pointing to the giant screen. "I learned in class that U.S. and China started diplomatic ties from playing the table tennis," she smiled. For Si Yaqin, who came to New York with her son for vacation, watching the debut of the video is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "It's my first time to New York, first time to Times Square," she told Xinhua. "How lucky I am here to witness this moment. I feel so proud as a Chinese."The video is part of the public diplomacy campaign by the Chinese government ahead of Chinese President Hu Jintao's U.S. state visit. The video will be shown at Times Square 15 times every hour from 6 am to 2 am next day, totaling 20 hours and 300 times a day. It will last till Feb. 14 with a total of 8,400 times of show time.Meanwhile, CNN also plans to run the video from Jan. 17 to Feb. 13.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday will begin its annual Spring Festival travel rush, with an expected 2.56 billion passenger trips in the coming 40 days.Airlines and trains have been added to cope with the passenger surge, which is 11.6 percent up year on year, according to the Ministry of Transport. The airport in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, announced Tuesday it would add another 252 flights for the travel peak period. The capacity of airlines in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region will be raised 30 percent. In southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, a major hometown to migrant workers, 12 flights with 5,100 seats will be added between Chongqing and Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province.Except for the temporary trains, more high-speed trains have been put into operation for the Spring Festival. The high-speed train will be increased to 88 pairs this year, 55 more than last year's 33 pairs in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, which largely eased the difficulties of buying tickets for passengers.Snow and sleet has struck five provincial level regions, including Hunan, Guangxi, Chongqing, Guizhou and Yunnan since Monday, disrupting transportation networks. The Ministry of Public Security Tuesday ordered police in the five hard-hit areas to go all out to keep traffic flowing and make sure no expressways were shut down due to slippery roads.Police in the five localities were ordered to clean snow and ice on the roads and store emergency response materials, such as snow blowers, and maintain control of the flow of vehicles heading to the hardest-hit Guizhou province."Snow and ice will bring great difficulties to transportation," said Weng Mengyong, vice minister of the Ministry of Transport (MOT).Five aspects of work, including anti-ice preparation, information release, monitoring network, emergency reaction and cooperation with public security bureaus, had been arranged ahead of the travel peak, Weng said.In early 2008, freezing weather across southern China caused power cuts and transportation chaos, preventing many residents from going home for family reunions during China's lunar new year.Other new services are also being supplied as the pressure of transportation is increasing this year. The Wuhan Railway Administration started ticket delivery services for migrant workers this year and about 3 million tickets will be delivered. In south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Nanjing Railway Administration opened micro-blogs on Sina.com and QQ.com to offer railway transportation information. In the next 40 days, not only passengers, but also railway crews, will face great challenges."Patrolling is like a sauna to me," said railway police Zhao Hongye in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province."It is too crowded. The 18 carriages are only 450 meters long, but it takes me at least two hours to go though," Zhao said."It is the homesickness which makes the huge migration," said Li Jiwei, a college student in Lanzhou, who had been counting the hours to get on his train home."It's only 10 hours left," he said. "I cannot wait to go home. The warm of home can offset all the difficulties on the journey," he said."There is no Spring Festival if you are not at home," said Zhou Changnong, a migrant worker, heading from Xining, capital of southwest China's Qinghai Province, to his home town in central China's Hunan Province.

MOSCOW, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping held talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin here on Tuesday, exchanging views with the Russian side on the current situation of the Korean Peninsula. The two sides reached consensus on the issue, saying both China and Russia urged the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to jointly mitigate tensions on the peninsula and to resume direct dialogue at an early date.Escalating tensions on the peninsula may even trigger a war, which is absolute not in line with the interests of the relevant sides including Russia, the United States and Japan, the two diplomats said in a joint statement. The ROK and the DPRK are the most susceptible if the war broke out, the statement added.China and Russia will never allow any war on the peninsula, or the lingering tensions between the two countries. Thus, China and Russia will continue to further cooperation and coordination on the issue and to push forward the direct dialogue between the ROK and the DPRK, the diplomats said. They said China and Russia are calling for joint efforts from relevant sides to stabilize the situation on the peninsula and not to impair peace, safety or stability. The two sides also reiterated that the six-party talks were proved to be the most realistic and most effective solution to solving the problem.Currently, emergency consultations among the heads of delegations to the six-party talks are in urgent need, they added.Launched in 2003 and stalled since the end of 2008, the six- party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue involve China, the United States, the DPRK, the ROK, Russia and Japan. The two sides also exchanged views on bilateral ties, including high-level exchanges, the overall promotion of China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination, and several other issues.

BERLIN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- 2010 is an important year for the development of Sino-German relations. That's as the two countries have made big achievements on politics, economy, culture and society, sending their bilateral relations to a "new historical point."German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited China in July and met Premier Wen Jiabao and President Hu Jintao. During her visit, China and Germany issued the second communique in two countries' history, which was considered a historical event by both sides. The Sino-German relations have entered a new phase, Merkel said. The development of relations between the two countries, she said, are formed on a "completely new basis."Wen said Merkel's visit and the communique have "historical significance" that will help map out the blueprint of bilateral ties and make it stand on "a new historical starting point."The communique contains 28 points, in which both sides pledged to maintain regular contact between their leaders and the mechanism of annual meetings of the premier and chancellor. Both countries stressed to take care of each other's core interests, to enhance their mutual understanding and political trust, and to strengthen dialogues on strategy, law and human rights. They also expressed interest in improving cooperation in the United Nations, international financial institutions and other multilateral organizations. In addition to Merkel's visit, the two countries' leaders met each other during many world events in 2010 to strengthen their mutual trust. In April, Hu met Merkel at the the nuclear summit in Washington. One month later former German President Horst Koehler paid a state visit to China.During Wen visit to Europe in October, the premier changed his route and met Merkel in Berlin. Both sides reconfirmed the communique issued in July. Wen also was invited to co-chair the first round of the Sino-German government consultations in 2011, making Germany the first EU country to hold high-level intergovernmental consultations with China."China and Germany have maintained a strategic partnership and a close bilateral tie, even at the highest political level," the German foreign ministry said.Tight political relations are built on strong and complementary economic connections between China and Germany, the largest trading partner for each other in their respective regions.Sino-German trade has accounted for nearly one third of the trade between China and Europe. According to the latest statistics of China Customs, from January to October, Sino-German bilateral trade reached about 115 billion U.S. dollars, up 35 percent over the same period of last year. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said Germany has invested in 319 projects, an actual investment of 830 million dollars in China from January to November, while China invested 160 million dollars in Germany at the same period. In the last three years, foreign direct investments (FDI) from China to Germany witnessed a fast development, not only in numbers, but also on quality, professionalism and management, Michael Pfeiffer, CEO of Germany Trade and Invest, told Xinhua in a recent interview."In a long period, there were four to seven FDI projects from China to Germany every year. However, 2008 was a turning point with 21 FDI projects realized," he said. "By 2009, this number has been tripled."At present, there are 800 Chinese enterprises that have set up companies or offices in Germany. To counter the toughest economic crisis after World War II, China and Germany have also taken several stimulus plans to stimulate economies and domestic demand. In 2010, both countries cooperated closely on opposing protectionism, strengthening international financial regulations and preventing global climate change, said Wu Hongbo, the Chinese ambassador to Germany. On issues such as China's market economy status, technology transfer, intellectual property protection, China and Germany have actively listened to each other's concerns and sought solutions. In 2010, China and Germany also made big progress on cultural and social exchanges. The German Pavilion "Harmonious City" received about 4 million visitors at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and won a top prize there. The activity, "Germany-China Moving Ahead Together," which started in 2006, has greatly enhanced the mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries. This summer, 45 German universities and colleges held China Week to show the charm of the Chinese language and culture, and to help more young Germans understand contemporary China. At the same time, 200 German high school students attended summer camps in China and experienced real Chinese life there. In 2012, China will host "Chinese Culture Year" in Germany.
