SAN DIEGO (CNS) - After being reassured that motorists' privacy would not be compromised, the county Board of Supervisors Wednesday unanimously approved a plan to electronically collect license plate data as part of a vehicle- emissions study aimed at improving air quality.Under the plan, the county Air Pollution Control District will use automated license reader software to analyze vehicles at 12 intersections in disadvantaged communities, including Barrio Logan, Logan Heights, Sherman Heights and western National City.A state grant will pay for the ,500 automated license plate reader system, which will collect license plate numbers and vehicles' weight, make and model.Jon Adams, assistant director of APCD, said the data will be collected in a secure method and kept at the district office, and would not be shared with anyone else. The resolution condemns anti-Semitism, white supremacy, white nationalism and other forms of hatred as antithetical to ``American values of dignity and respect for all people.'' It also expresses hope that the three injured survivors of the attack make a full and swift recovery and includes a call to honor the memory of Lori Gilbert Kaye, 60, who died at the scene of the shooting that occurred during a celebration of the end of the eight-day Jewish holiday of Passover. ``The rising threat of white nationalism and white supremacy is in direct contradiction with the highest ideals of our country, and I urge my colleagues to join me in supporting this resolution to condemn this despicable hate,'' Harris said. ``Hate has no place in our country,'' Feinstein said. ``Our resolution condemns the anti-Semitic attack on Congregation Chabad and reaffirms our nation's values of openness and tolerance so all Americans can worship freely without fear of violence.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was behind bars Wednesday in connection with a mugging that left a 73-year-old disabled woman gravely injured last week on a downtown roadside near Cortez Hill.Stanley Harris Hinton, 31, was arrested Monday on suspicion of carrying out the robbery and assault in the Core-Columbia district of San Diego, according to police.The 6-foot-3-inch, 215-pound suspect allegedly attacked Nannette Altevers, who uses a walker, near the corner of B Street and Fourth Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Friday.Patrol officers responding to a 911 call about the assault found the assailant gone and Altevers suffering from extensive upper body trauma, Lt. Matt Dobbs said. She remains hospitalized in critical condition.Due to the severity of the victim's injuries, homicide detectives have taken charge of the case, the lieutenant said.Hinton was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault, robbery and elder abuse. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man was sentenced Thursday to nearly four years in federal prison for his role in a scheme that took millions of dollars from U.S. servicemembers by utilizing stolen identity information.Trorice Crawford, 33, pleaded guilty last December to one count of conspiracy to launder monetary instruments for his part in facilitating the thefts of funds from thousands of military members' bank accounts.U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia imposed a 46-month sentence and also ordered Crawford to pay 3,700 in restitution. He will also be placed on three years of supervised release after completing his prison term.According to the Department of Justice, the scheme began when co-defendant Frederick Brown, 38, of Las Vegas, was working as a civilian medical records administrator at a U.S. Army installation in South Korea.Prosecutors say that while logged into an Armed Forces database providing the names, social security numbers, DOD ID numbers, dates of birth and contact information of thousands of military members, Brown obtained the servicemembers' personal information and gave that information to one of his co-defendants.Crawford's role involved recruiting at least 30 people who allowed the defendants to funnel the stolen funds into their bank accounts, according to the Department of Justice. He also oversaw transfers of the money to co-defendants overseas.For his part, Crawford took a percentage of the stolen funds. The DOJ said the defendants took between ,000 to ,000 from each victim.Brown has also pleaded guilty and is slated for a September sentencing, while three other defendants are in custody in the Philippines and are awaiting extradition to the United States on charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. 1796
