BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — For three days, Andrew Bryant said he watched the Parkland shooting suspect inside his jail cell. Bryant, an inmate at the Broward County Jail, said he saw Nikolas Cruz pacing and staring at the ceiling inside his individual cell in the infirmary wing.“I don't think he was looking at anyone, just laying down looking at the roof,” Bryant told Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida. Jail records confirm Bryant spent time in the same wing of the jail as Cruz while incarcerated on drug-related charges.Inmate observation logs of Cruz released by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office reveal more insight into the accused killer’s behavior. Bryant said it’s that behavior he saw that made him want to reach out and speak to WPTV. “He was just lost in his mind,” Bryant said.Bryant could hear Cruz, see Cruz, and form his own opinion of Cruz. “I just hope he doesn't plead insanity or he gets off or anything because, in my opinion, I don't think he's crazy and deserves everything coming to him.”Bryant said everyone in the jail, from the deputies to the inmates, were talking about Cruz.“I think he felt intimidated being in jail,” said Bryant. “Everyone had a problem with him.”Bryant’s observations matched those recorded by deputies. A deputy is required to check on Cruz every 15 minutes and record their observations of him. They reported Cruz sleeping most of the day and eating infrequently.Cruz made little eye contact with anyone, deputies wrote in the reports. He often sat with a blank stare and appeared to be in thought. He was not allowed to interact with other inmates.“I’ve got kids so I feel strongly about this situation,” Bryant said. “If he was out of his jail, somebody probably would’ve hurt him, to be honest.”Deputies wrote Cruz is cooperative, logical, and coherent. One night, he requested a Bible to read.On one occasion when he met with his attorney, deputies said Cruz was “responsive to interview, shaking his head, nodding and agreeing, forward and engaging in the conversation.”Jail records show Cruz met with his brother twice last month, as well as with a family friend. He also met with attorneys, psychologists, and investigators.Bryant said the infirmary was on a heightened level of security while Cruz was there. He said inmates were not allowed out of their cells during that time. “When he’s not there, you will get out once or twice a day for an hour or so.”On Fen. 23, Cruz left the infirmary for another floor where he is kept away from other inmates.Bryant was released from the Broward County Jail five days later. 2635

BOSTON (AP) — A California marketing executive and author was sentenced Wednesday to three weeks in prison for paying ,000 to cheat on her son's college entrance exam.Jane Buckingham, 51, was sentenced in Boston's federal court after pleading guilty in May to a single count of fraud and conspiracy. She is the 11th parent to be sentenced in a college admissions bribery scheme that ensnared dozens of wealthy parents. The Los Angeles resident admitted to paying ,000 to a sham charity operated by admissions consultant William "Rick" Singer , who then bribed a test proctor to take the ACT exam on behalf of her son at a Houston, Texas, testing site in 2018. Singer has pleaded guilty to his role in the scheme.Buckingham gave her son a practice test at home and led him to believe he was taking the real test on his own, authorities said. Her lawyers said the measure was intended to protect him from learning about the scheme. It landed her son a 35 out of 36 on the ACT, placing him in the 99th percentile nationally. Buckingham aimed to get her son into the University of Southern California, prosecutors said. It's unclear whether he enrolled at the school.Prosecutors recommended six months in prison and a ,000 fine, saying Buckingham was "more deeply engaged in the mechanics of the fraud than many of the other parents" in the case. By having a proctor take the test on her son's behalf, they said, she deprived him "of even the opportunity to get any of the answers right on his own."Buckingham is CEO of the Los Angeles marketing firm Trendera and has authored several books, including "The Modern Girl's Guide to Life." She apologized in a letter to the court, saying she is ashamed and has "absolutely no excuse.""My family and my children have been lucky to have so many advantages that other families and children do not," she wrote. "And yet I committed a crime so that my son could have another advantage, an unfair and illegal one. It was a terrible thing to do."More than 50 people have been charged in the admissions scheme, which involves wealthy and famous parents accused of paying bribes to rig their children's test scores or to get them admitted to elite universities as recruited athletes.A total of 19 parents have pleaded guilty, including four who reversed earlier pleas of not guilty this week. Another 15 are contesting the charges. Trials are expected to begin in 2020. 2418

BOULDER, Colo – The City of Boulder was hit by a scam artist who allegedly hacked the email system at the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, convincing the city to transfer more than ,000 into a fraudulent bank account.According to a press release from the City of Boulder, it was a "successful email and financial fraud scam."City officials stated the incident happened early last month, with the scammer gaining unauthorized access to the email system of Boulder Shelter for the Homeless by impersonating shelter staff. They said the scammer sent email requests to the city to change the bank account information used by the shelter to receive city human services funding.According to the city, it processed the change and later transferred ,333.33 to the fraudulent account as part of its routine payment to the shelter. The city contacted its bank to attempt to reverse the payment and opened a police investigation.“In 2017, the City of Boulder enhanced its financial procedures to help make financial transactions more secure,” the city wrote in a statement. “In this situation, financial procedures to verify the authenticity of the request to change bank information were not followed. The Finance Department is conducting an internal investigation related to the fraudulent activity and the failure to comply with city procedures. While the city will not comment on specific personnel matters, it will take appropriate disciplinary action up to and including termination of staff.”  Greg Harms, the executive director of the shelter, spoke with the Boulder Daily Camera about the situation. According to the article, Harms said the missing funds would have been the payment the shelter received for November as part of the contract the organization has with the city. The Daily Camera also reported the shelter contacted the city when it didn’t receive the payment, but Harms doesn’t know when the investigation began. 1953

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Romaine lettuce that was sold at Walmart stores across the country is being recalled because it may be contaminated with E. coli.Tanimura & Antle Inc. is voluntarily recalling its packaged single head romaine lettuce after at least 12 people in six states became infected with a strain of E. coli, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Five of those people were hospitalized.Health officials say they’ve determined that the E. coli strain in the affected lettuce was closely related genetically to the strain identified in ill people. The company says a total of 3,396 cartons of potentially affected product were distributed to the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and the U.S. territory Puerto Rico.Walmart has released a list of more than 1,000 of its stores where the recalled lettuce was sold.Affected packages contain a single head of lettuce with the UPC number 0-27918-20314-9. They are labeled with the “packed on” dates 10/15/2020 or 10/16/2020. No other products or pack dates are being recalled. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says this strain of E. coli causes diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure. It’s most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death, according to the FDA.The CDC says people usually get sick from the E. coli two to eight days after swallowing the germ. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Some have a fever, which usually is not very high. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact a physician. If you have any of the affected lettuce, officials say the product should be disposed of and not consumed. Those with questions or concerns can call the Tanimura & Antle Consumer Hotline at 877-827-7388, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 2158
