Hours before dying in Fiji, Michelle Paul texted her parents saying she had been vomiting for hours during her vacation."We are both going to the doctor now. We have been throwing up for 8 hours. Dave has diarrhea. My hands are numb. We will text when we can," she told her father, Marc Calanog, on a WhatsApp message.Paul and her husband, David, became ill while vacationing in Fiji late last month and died within days of each other. The deaths of the Texas couple are being investigated by health officials on the South Pacific Island, with help from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."We just got back from the clinic. They gave us fluids and an anti-nausea drip," Calanog said his daughter said on another message. "They gave us electrolyte packets and anti-nausea pills. We still don't feel 100%. Going to rest in our room."But their illnesses quickly worsened. After his daughter died, Calanog said he urged his son-in-law to focus on taking care of himself because Michelle was already in a better place. He died two days later.Calanog said they are still unsure what happened to his daughter and son-in-law and that he and his family are concentrating on taking care of his 2-year-old grandson.Fiji's Ministry of Health said investigations into the cause of death are ongoing. It said influenza has been ruled out. Tissue samples are en route to the CDC's Atlanta headquarters for testing."And at this stage we do not believe there is any risk to the public. It would be premature to speculate further on the cause of death until the investigation is complete," the ministry said.,The deaths were confirmed by a US State Department official, who said in a statement that American authorities were "closely monitoring" the investigation. The Fijian ministry said it is also working with the country's police forensics department and the World Health Organization to determine the cause of death. The couple died over Memorial Day weekend, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Their families are currently working with US officials to repatriate their remains. 2094

I hear Air Canada is moving towards addressing its passengers in a more gender-neutral way, replacing “ladies and gentlemen” with “everyone”. This. Is. Good.— Kate Andrews (@kateality) October 13, 2019 213

Hundreds of cities have put curfews in place because of the protests. That makes it so law enforcement can stop or arrest anyone on the street, but many protesters have ignored the restrictions. So, why do it? We spoke to an expert in policing who says it’s about separating those hiding in the crowd to incite violence and protecting demonstrators trying to have their voices heard.“It doesn't necessarily give power. It gives them the ability to contain better whatever it is that they need to contain,” said Dr. Maria Haberfeld, a professor of law, police science and criminal justice at John Jay College. “Whether it's rioting, whether it's looting, whether it's unlawful gathering of people.”Haberfeld says curfews have a history of controversy. They were used during the Jim Crow era against African Americans and against Japanese populations during World War II.Now, they're normally used for juveniles or during natural disasters like hurricanes. Haberfeld calls that the good use of curfews to protect the general population.Still, the ACLU has criticized curfews as unfair and unconstitutional, saying it gives police too much discretion over who to arrest. Haberfeld doesn't see it that way.“When a city's under siege, when a city's in danger of being burned and destroyed, that has nothing to do with unconstitutional,” said Haberfeld. “That has everything to do actually with serving and protecting people who live in the city.”Haberfeld says it's important to note that curfews are instituted by mayors or local governments, not by police chiefs or commissioners. She says police departments cannot and do not want to arrest everyone. 1660

Fewer people than you'd think have earthquake insurance in Southern California, rattled this week by two major earthquakes.Friday's 7.1-magnitude quake, centered near Ridgecrest, led to gas leaks, building fires and water main breaks. It came a day after a magnitude-6.4 temblor in the same area.In a state especially prone to tremors, 348
