VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Californians are getting ready for a new set of businesses to reopen after June 12, 2020. Last Friday, the state released specific COVID-19 guidelines for several industries, including gyms, bars, and hotels. Vista Fitness owner Brian Belasco is setting up cones in his parking lot to create social distancing spots for his patrons. He's doing this well in advance of the state's gym reopenings on June 12."Being able to reopen means the world to us," Belasco said. Last Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom released specific guidelines for the next group of industries allowed to reopen with modifications, no sooner than June 12, 2020. They include gyms, schools, film production, professional sports, bars and wineries, hotels, cardrooms, family entertainment, museums, and zoos. Since mid-March, Belasco said his trainers have been successfully teaching online workout classes. "We just finished a virtual challenge," Belasco said. "We had members losing up to 30 pounds in 28 days."But he said he is ready to see his members in person. "It's the camaraderie, especially times like right now, bringing people together that is our specialty," Belasco said. That is why he says he is implementing many of the State's new gym guidelines, which include:Limiting the number of members insideConducting temperature and health screenings upon entryStaggering lockers and machinesProviding disinfecting wipes or gel for hands and equipment No sharing water bottles or towelsWearing masksFor weeks, Belasco has been practicing these guidelines already with his coaches and volunteers. "They get called in one by one, temperature check, foot bath, hand sanitizer, and then they get pointed to their station, and they're all spread out in this room," Belasco said as he pointed at the mat in the middle of the gym. So when June 12 rolls around, Belasco said the new guidelines will seem like old news. "We've been ready. We've been researching. We have all of the supplies, and we are ready to go," Belasco said proudly. All businesses in this category will require the San Diego County Public Health Officer's approval before they can reopen. VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- If you are working from home, you may have bought some new items to accommodate the situation, or you are probably using more of the resources you already pay for.If you were planning on writing off these new expenses on your next tax return, "Unfortunately, there are no tax benefits to working from home if you are an employee,” Scott Rinehart, a tax professional and financial advisor with Carlson Financial, said.While tax season is months away, Rinehart said he has already received some questions from people."I've had people ask, 'since I work from home, can I deduct my office now?'” he explained.Say, for example, if you bought a laptop and it cost a couple hundred dollars, the rent on your apartment or certain utilities like electricity -- just to name a few examples -- you cannot write those off on your taxes.“The tax act a few years ago got rid of that tax break for employees,” Rinehart said.He mentioned an exception, however."If you are self-employed and now instead of going to your office, you're working from home, you can deduct a portion of your home you're using as your office."It is the same scenario for those homeschooling their children, Rinehart added, but he explained that extra paid leave was provided in the Family First Coronavirus Response Act for parents tending to their children.A tax write-off normally helps to reduce the amount of tax you owe."I think there will be folks who will try to claim these expenses when they itemize,” Rinehart said, “or add some sort of miscellaneous deduction, and they're just not going to be allowed."If you do make these claims or accidentally file for a write-off, Rinehart said, “You may get a letter from the IRS at some point saying, 'Hey, you owe us some money.’”In that event, Rinehart said the IRS will try to work with the filer to fix the issue. WASHINGTON — Vandalism at four downtown Washington churches after rallies in support of President Donald Trump is exposing rifts among people of faith as the nation confronts bitter post-election political divisions. The houses of worship that were vandalized included two historically Black churches where people ripped down Black Lives Matter banners. VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The COVID-19 pandemic has hit communities hard in many different ways.A new survey shows it's also taken a toll on museums, with some not sure whether they'll be able to keep their doors open.At the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), you'd find all sorts of displays.The museum reopened in July after being closed roughly five months during the pandemic.“We've had just around 3,000 people come through the museum over the last three months,” Brad Tuggle, Director of Audience Development for Virginia MOCA, said. “Our museum is in a good spot relative to where it could be.”Tuggle told News 3 the museum had concerns at first.“There were a lot of furloughs with the museum; we went down to about 40% of our staff,” Tuggle said. “We didn't know if this pandemic was going to shut us down for three months or three years.”The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) surveyed museums to get a feel for impacts from the pandemic.“Anecdotally, we knew that museums were significantly impacted by the pandemic the second they had to close their doors,” AAM Director of Marketing and Communications Natanya Khashan said.Khashan told News 3 at least 750 museum directors responded to the survey in June.One-third of those responding were not confident they would be able to survive 16 months without additional financial relief, and 16% felt their organization was at a significant risk of permanent closure.AAM added, during the pandemic, 75% of museums stepped into roles as educators providing virtual education programs and experiences. Two-thirds of directors predicted cuts in education, programming, and other public services due to significant budget cuts.“It is really unfortunate, and the number isn't surprising because museums have to cut where they can in order to survive the impact of the pandemic,” Khashan said.Tuggle said funding from the City of Virginia Beach and other partners helped.“We had a lot of people on staff and the community that in that first month really stepped up,” he said.He added the museum also launched a virtual museum online for people during the pandemic.“It really gave us an avenue to get that artwork out to the world, which is what we're here for,” he said.As they continue on, Khashan hopes many will support other museums around the country during this time.“Their communities are going to need their museums more than ever to help sustain their economies and their educational systems, and to provide respite and healing as we look towards the recovery in the future,” she said.This story was first reported by Zak Dahlheimer at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2633
