Call it futuristic, but in reality, it's science redirected to make people feel better.Eric Rice, founder and CEO of Quanta, gave a virtual tour of his Los Angeles-based lab which produces the muscle Rub.“We have the brain and the body,” Rice said. “The brain does all the calculation. We don’t use any synthetic materials for any of our products.”Running Quanta, he's leading the charge in new technology geared toward pain management."Pain right now affects 22% of the world’s population, or 1.7 billion people daily,” Rice said. “Chronic pain, pain that lasts 3 weeks or longer, that’s considered chronic.”Rice is a former baseball player, so pain is something that Rice knows all too well.“I’m a former athlete and I have horrible knees, shoulders and back,” Rice said. “We started out with a simple muscle rub with a few ingredients and CBD was a great place for us to start. It’s been around, patented, but used for one pharmaceutical solution.”He took the concept of CBD or cannabidiol and applied his knowledge of quantum physics and biochemistry to change molecules, which then makes ingredients more effective.“Imagine my finger point being a nucleus. When you’re alive, electrons rotate like this, really far really fast from the center,” Rice said. “As you die and age, they slow down and get closer to the nucleus. Chicago police announced at a Monday morning news conference that 66 people were shot, 12 of them fatally, between Friday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 11:59 p.m.Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson said it was "no secret that we had an unacceptably violent weekend," at the news conference.In three hours beginning at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, records show, 30 people were shot and two killed in 10 incidents. In all, over the weekend, there were 33 shooting incidents. Fourteen juveniles were shot, and an 11- and 13-year-old were killed."The city of Chicago experienced a violent night," Bureau of Patrol Chief Fred Waller said Sunday afternoon. "Some of these instances were targeted and were related to gang conflicts in those areas."In at least one incident, shooters opened fire into a crowded street party, Waller said.Johnson said the issue stemmed from a small group of people such as repeat gun offenders."This isn't a widespread issue among citizens of this city. This is a small subset of individuals who think they can play by their own rules because they continue to get a slap on the wrist when we arrest them," Johnson said."I'm tired of it. Carnival Cruise Lines announced Wednesday that it had canceled most cruises that were scheduled to embark from U.S. through the end of January 2021.In addition, the company announced that all cruises embarking from Baltimore; Charleston, South Carolina; Long Beach, California; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans and San Diego has been canceled through the end of February and that all cruises on the Carnival Legend that embark from Tampa, Florida had been canceled through March 28.In a tweet, Carnival said that when it restarts operations in 2021, it will focus on cruises embarking from Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida. California is still counting ballots more than three weeks after Election Day.The slow counting process has been underscored by a series of House races in California carrying on for days past November 6. Now, the only remaining uncalled US House race is in California's 21st Congressional District.There, Republican Rep. David Valadao trails Democratic challenger TJ Cox by 506 votes -- or about half a percentage point -- with votes still being counted. If Cox holds on to win, it would give Democrats a net pickup of 40 House seats this year.So why is the process so slow?California officials say the effort is built with a series of safeguards, many of which don't exist in other states. The bottom line: California's vote-counting process is built to take a long time."The philosophy here is, while it may take a little bit longer to finish counting ballots in California, the policies are in place to ensure that all votes can be properly processed and added to the tally -- and I guess better said, that all voices can be heard in the political process," California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in a phone interview Wednesday.The state's laws give its voters, about two-thirds of whom cast their ballots by mail, more time to send in their ballots. As long as they are postmarked by Election Day and arrive at county elections offices by Friday -- three days after the election -- they're counted.California also requires counties to give voters time to fix any issues with their ballots -- such as a missing signature -- and requires counties to contact those voters to inform them of any problems.When voters mail ballots to the wrong county, those counties are required to send them to the right one.The state allows same-day voter registration.
