MACAO, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Up to 123 candidates from various civil groups in Macao to participate in the 4th Legislative Assembly Election of the Special Administrative Region (SAR) will vie for 12 directly-elected seats in the Assembly, the Macao Post Daily reported on Tuesday.     A total of 16 groups completed their registration procedures over the past six weeks for joining the SAR's direct legislative election which was scheduled to take place on September 20, according to the daily.     The SAR's legislature has 29 seats, 12 of which are directly elected and 10 indirectly elected while the rest will be appointed by the SAR's chief executive.     Registered candidacy commissions could submit their political manifestoes and lists of candidates to the authorities before Monday. In accordance with the law, the commissions need to acquire a minimum of 300 endorsements from registered voters to be accepted as a legitimate competitor in the upcoming election.     The officially verified lists of the candidates will be announced on July 28 at the earliest.

L'AQUILA, July 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said on Thursday that he was looking forward to visiting China later this year.     Obama made the remarks when meeting with Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo, who was here to attend the leaders' meeting of the Group of Eight (G8) and five leading emerging economies (G5) on behalf of Chinese President Hu Jintao.     During the meeting, Obama said the U.S. side attached importance to the U.S.-China relations, and he hoped that the upcoming U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue could generate fruitful results, according to a press release issued by the Chinese delegation.     It is important for the United States and China to enhance cooperation on major international issues, Obama said, adding that it benefits both countries and both people.     The two also exchanged views on bilateral relations and other major international and regional issues, said the press release.     Dai conveyed Hu's greetings to Obama while Obama asked Dai to pass on his greetings and good wishes to Hu.     Hu cut short his stay in Italy and skipped the G8 meeting due to the situation in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. TAIPEI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland business delegation signed deals to purchase Taiwan products worth more than 2.2 billion U.S. dollars after a four-day visit to the island, it was announced Thursday.     Orders involving 827 million dollars of products would be filled by July, and products worth of 1.4 billion dollars would be delivered by the end of this year, said Li Shuilin, head of the delegation.     On their shopping list are LCD (liquid crystal display) equipment, spare parts for mobile phones and computers, plastic and chemical products, textiles and handcrafts, he said.     The group, organized by the Mainland Association for Cross-Strait Economic and Trade Exchanges, comprised about 80 representatives of 35 companies, including IT and home appliance giants Lenovo, Haier, Changhong and ZTE.     Their buying spree was seen as a symbolic step to expand trade ties between the mainland and Taiwan and to offset the effects of the global economic downturn.     The mainland businesses held talks with more than 300 Taiwan firms in Taipei and Kaohsiung to learn more about their products and market potential in the mainland.     They also discussed how to use their reciprocal advantages to reinforce manufacturing capacities of both the mainland and Taiwan, Li said.     Also on Thursday, telecommunication industries on both sides of the Taiwan Strait agreed to tap mobile telecommunication markets, particularly the mainland's newly-launched 3G (third generation mobile telecommunication) market.     A total of 17 telecommunication service providers and 30 equipment manufacturers of the mainland were invited to attend a forum in Taipei this week.     Datang Telecom, a mainland telecommunication equipment vendor, signed an agreement on cooperation with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Central Authorities have launched a new round of campaign to crack down on "small coffers" illegally held in the hands of Party and government organizations at different levels.     This year, Party and government departments that completely rely on the budgetary funds are the first to carry out the work and later, the campaign will involve all nongovernmental organizations, state-run companies, and state-held companies, in a step-by-step way, says a document recently issued by the General Offices of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council.     The document, known as "Directions on Deepening the Crackdown of Small Exchequers", criticized the illegal phenomenon, emphasizing that in some areas and departments it has occurred frequently or even seriously. "The masses have responded to it strongly," it says.     It calls these "small coffers" a "cancer" and says they must be eliminated. The illegal phenomenon has resulted in inaccuracy in accounting, disturbance in market order, losses in state income and property and corruption, according to the circular.     It encourages all units concerned to check the problem by themselves and those that pretend to do so will be punished. It pledges to punish those who try to boycott the campaign or retaliate the tippers.     Those that are involving huge sum of the illegal treasuries or criminal activities will be handed over to judicial departments in accordance with law, according to the document.     The Central Authorities have set up a special leading group with members from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Supervision, the Ministry of Finance, and the State Auditing Administration.     In the late 1990s, the Chinese Authorities conducted the first round of auditing and cracking down on "small coffers" throughout the country.
