SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego traffic is costing local commuters thousands per year, according to a new report. The Urban Mobility Report compiled by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute takes a look at major cities around the U.S. and just how much time people waste every year stuck in traffic.According to the report, San Diegans spend an average of 64 hours a year stuck in traffic. All that waiting really adds up. The report says those same commuters spend ,440 in congestion cost a year. To come up with those numbers, the report looked at the value of the time wasted, estimated at .29 per hour for the average commuter and .94 per hour of truck time. The report was also compiled using average fuel cost – which is nearly a dollar more per gallon in the state of California. Los Angeles topped the list for most time wasted in traffic at 119 hours per year followed by San Francisco at 103 hours and Washington D.C. at 102 hours. 957

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six months after closing its doors to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SeaWorld San Diego is reopening through their weekend Zoo Days Bayside BBQ and Brews events. The special event will take place every weekend until SeaWorld can fully open. The park's attractions will be very limited, with guests able to enjoy all outdoor animals exhibits and shows."We’re opening as an accredited zoo and you can come in and enjoy all the live animal presentations we’re world famous for like the Orca Encounter, dolphins, Sea Lions Live and all the outdoor exhibits that people love and miss," said SeaWorld Park President Marilyn Hannes..Among closed signs for indoor exhibits, game rooms and rides, guests will also notice dozens of sanitizer stations, distance markers and download codes for digital park maps spread throughout.Visitors will also be able to continue enjoying the tide pool areas. "The water is highly filtrated, each of the systems were designed to be a touch pool so they have a high filtration and so that constant turnout makes it safe to do the interaction," Hannes said.Although some of the attractions are closed, Hannes said new ones will take its place, adding, "We’ve opened up Vistas to the Bay so we have a new waterfront area where you can that ocean breeze and try craft beers."Zoo Days will take place every Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The event has a limited capacity and purchasing a ticket online acts as a reservation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Arts Park @ Chollas Creek has been helping young people for almost 20 years now."The reason this place was started was there was a lot of vandalism in the community. I was part of the problem then, I consider myself part of the solution," said Jose Venegas, a co-founder, and Program Coordinator at Writerz Blok. During his teenage years, Venegas turned to graffiti. "It was that or gang bang really, to be honest, I grew up in a neighborhood where there was a lot of gang activity, a lot of drugs."A twist of fate led his friends to tag a vacant property in Southeast San Diego owned by the Jacobs Center. Rather than make the teens someone else's problem, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation embraced them, donating the space and funding materials. "We encounter a lot of youth who show artistic expression but have never had a mentor or seen professional artists doing murals, graffiti," said Bennett Peji, Vice President of Impact and Partnership for the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. Their mission is to foster a thriving community envisioned and realized by its residents.“The identify of a place should really reflect the the community that lives there but that’s not often the case," said Peji. Jacobs Center donated the property and funded materials to make the Arts Park a reality. Writerz Blok artists have able to help hundreds of teens and they now do workshops in high schools as well as the East Mesa Juvenile Detention Center."It's a very soothing feeling, it's like therapy," said Venegas. "I feel like this place has done more than offer a space to paint."The Arts Park is open Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. It will also be open one Saturday a month in the summer. 1755

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sometimes, salads don't require any lettuce or greens. Sometimes, you just need the right mix of fruit and vegetables — and fish.West Pac Noodle Bar's take on green papaya salad brings a different take on salads, adding a heaping helping of papaya, mangos, carrots, and, yes, fish sauce. But as West Pac's Executive Sous Chef Jared Becker showed us, the combination is worth breaking out of your comfort zone. The Dish:Green Papaya SaladWhat You'll Need:For Dressing: 492

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo's 7-month-old endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo has finally emerged from her mother's pouch. The young "joey" has not been named, but is beginning to spend more time outside her mom, Polly, according to zoo officials.“The joey, right now, cannot get enough things in her mouth,” said Breanne Barney, keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “She’s constantly trying to eat leaves, greens, various vegetables, corn—even chewing on moms’ ears, tail, hands and feet!”The little kangaroo doesn't stray far from her mom though, as she learns to climb and maneuver outside of the pouch, the zoo says.Matschie’s tree kangaroos have an estimated gestation period of about 45 days and are about the size of a jelly bean when born. Once born, they crawl back into their mom's pouch and attach to a nipple to gain nourishment and grow. Tree kangaroos remain in the pouch for a few months.“Polly is an excellent mother, and consistently grooming her little one,” Barney said. “Due to their small population numbers, this joey provides a spark of hope for the future of this species.”The kangaroos are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of threatened species. There are less than 2,500 of the kangaroos in their native habitats of Papua New Guinea and the Huon Peninsula.Unfortunately, they are hunted by humans for food and trade, according to the zoo. The zoo's Matschie’s tree kangaroos came to the Safari Park’s Walkabout Australia in 2018 as part of a Species Survival Plan breeding program. 1573
