SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An official with the Encinitas Union School District confirmed Sunday a presumptive positive case of COVID-19.In a release sent to families of the district, Superintendent Andree Grey said "individual at Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary" tested positive. Grey could not provide further details citing privacy restrictions."I understand that it can be disconcerting to not have specific information surrounding the individual, however, it is important that we respect the privacy of our students and staff. Recently a positive case was noted in Encinitas and today the County Department of Public Health and Human Services confirmed a presumptive positive in our school community. An individual at Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary has tested presumptive positive for COVID-19. In situations with infectious diseases, we are required to follow the direction of the Center for Disease Control, California Department of Health, and the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). This includes following procedures related to HIPAA and privacy standards. I understand that it can be disconcerting to not have specific information surrounding the individual, however, it is important that we respect the privacy of our students and staff. At the same time, we want to provide you with as much information as possible. The San Diego County Department of Health and Human Services is currently in the process of investigating and the individual is in home isolation and being monitored. EUSD is notifying individuals who may have been exposed and asking them to self-quarantine. Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are common among animals and humans. This novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is a newly discovered coronavirus causing respiratory illness that has not been previously detected in animals or humans. The source of this virus is not yet known. Symptoms can include fever, cough and shortness of breath and can appear 2-14 days from exposure. Due to the way the COVID-19 virus is spread, per current protocol (directed by the Centers for Disease Control), HHSA suggests we consider all of us as being potentially exposed. Anyone who is ill should stay home except to get medical care. If you are ill, it is recommended you separate from others in the home, wear a face mask, cover cough and sneezes, clean hands and surfaces often, and avoid sharing personal items. It is important to monitor symptoms for potential worsening including shortness of breath. It should be emphasized that anyone experiencing symptoms should self-isolate and contact your doctor. We recognize and understand how concerning this information is. We will continue to monitor the situation and update you as we have additional information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman struck by a hit-and-run driver on a Logan Heights street suffered life-threatening injuries Friday, San Diego Police said. The crash happened about 11 a.m. in the 700 block of Cesar Chavez Parkway at Kearney Avenue. A white Ford F-150 pickup truck was driving west and struck a woman also heading west on the north sidewalk, police said. The truck made a right turn onto Kearney Avenue and struck the woman. The driver did not stop to help the woman and continued north on Kearney Avenue, according to investigators. The 52-year-old victim suffered major head trauma. Police said the truck had a tinted back window and a white California sticker. Anyone with information can call the San Diego Police Department. 747

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- America’s Finest City ranked high on a new list of best cities for jobs in 2019, according to WalletHub. San Diego ranked 28th out of 182 cities overall. Chula Vista also made the list, coming in 123rd place. According to the report, the national unemployment rate has fallen to an 18-year low of just 3.7 percent, while hiring also is up. College graduates are also beginning to see the benefits of the strong job market. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers plan to hire 16.6 percent more members from the class of 2019 compared to the previous year. Though San Diego secured a strong spot on the list, many cities ranked higher. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman suffered serious injuries from a hit-and-run crash Saturday while walking in the East Village, San Diego Police said.The 47-year-old woman was dragging her wheelchair across F St. at Park Blvd. at 3:55 a.m. when she was struck by a gray or silver Honda heading west.The car was last seen going north on 11th Ave., police said.The victim suffered two broken legs and a pelvic fracture.San Diego Police Traffic Division officers are investigating the case. 494

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An annual toy giveaway for San Diego military families looked different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the reason for the event remains the same.For this year’s Operation Holiday Joy, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA chose hundreds of local military families who needed a little extra help this holiday season.On Wednesday, at the Murphy Canyon Chapel on Santo Road, the YMCA handed out boxes of gift-wrapped toys, and even bicycles, to more than 1,000 kids.Families were given books, a mini Christmas tree, and a gift card.Tim Ney, executive director of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, said that now more than ever it’s important to support military families, as they too must deal with the additional challenges brought on by the pandemic.“Spouse employment is 30 percent, it’s really high. The online education and we’re doing the Achievement Academy where we’re taking the kids during the day.
