GENEVA, Ohio — As the service industry struggles due to the COVID-19 pandemic, business owners and employees face a new stressor: enforcing mask mandates and seating requirements at bars and restaurants.It’s no secret that adults don’t enjoy being told what to do, especially if they feel enforcement infringes on their personal space or choices. Behavioral therapists say there is a complex science that explains why some adults have reverted to infantile behavior during the pandemic.In recent weeks, there have been several incidents across in the country about high-profile disputes over masks — some of which have grown violent. The owner of a northeast Ohio winery said such a dispute led to property damage over the weekend.“We did have one incident where a customer punched a hole in the drywall in the men’s room at 7 p.m. on Saturday night,” said Gene Sigel, the owner of South River Vineyard.Sigel said in 20 years, the winery has never had any sort of property damage, but new state-mandated restrictions when visiting the vineyard appear to have some customers on edge.“We’re used to enforcing guidelines from the governor,” Sigel said. “But at the same time, asking people to sit down or put on a mask is a whole new range of imposition on people’s personal space.”While Sigel said the hole in the wall is a fairly inexpensive fix, his employees feel the behavior speaks to the way service industry workers are being treated by customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.“It certainly played into the tension,” Sigel said. “For whatever reason, somebody felt that the only place that there wouldn’t be a surveillance camera was in the restroom and that was a good place to leave a comment on their feelings as to the requirements here.”Behavioral therapists at the Cleveland Clinic report there’s scientific data to back up why adults behave this way in stressful situations. “Rebel psychological reactance” refers to the brain’s reaction to a threat to freedom or personal choices.Therapists believe those frustrations sometimes cause people to abandon common sense and behave erratically, even when safety is concerned.Sigel said he wants to remind customers to be patient with staff when visiting the vineyard and other businesses and added that employees are all doing the best they can to provide an enjoyable experience despite the new restrictions.“None of us have a lot of options of places to go. GORMAN, Calif. (KGTV) - Interstate 5 over the Grapevine reopened Thursday afternoon after an hours-long closure due to snow, ice, and multiple collisions. California Highway Patrol officials said the crashes involved semi-trucks and other stuck vehicles on north I-5 just north of Gorman School Road. There were no immediate reports of injuries.CHP officers also escorted traffic over Highway 58.At 9:27 a.m., the National Weather Service reported snow in the higher elevations of the I-5 pass through the Grapevine. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution when traveling over the Grapevine or avoid the area if possible.A Winter Weather Advisory has been extended until 4 p.m. and now includes areas in the Kern County Mountains above 4,000 feet, according to NWS. 774

Gunshots rang out at a birthday party on Detroit's east side injuring multiple people.Police said at least three people were shot at during the party, and a fourth victim was hit down the street.Investigators say it happened around 11:20 p.m. Sunday at a home.Police say the victims are a 27-year-old woman shot in the face, a 32-year-old woman shot in the leg and a 40-year-old man shot also shot in the leg.  All three told police they were at a birthday party when two men started shooting.The fourth victim, a 31-year-old man down the street, says he was walking when two men walked up to him and shot him in the backside and ran away.That man says he hopped on one leg to his home where he called police.Police do not have a description of the suspects, they only know they are looking for two armed men.All of the victims are listed in temporary serious condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.  924

Grocery workers continue to be on the front lines during the pandemic.United Way and Kendall-Jackson are now teaming up to get grocery workers more help through a national relief fund they've created.“What we have seen across the county in other disasters natural disasters is that initially there's this outpouring of support and people want to donate, but then it really starts to wane and lag just as the needs are starting to get even bigger,” said Suzanne McCormick, U.S. President of United Way Worldwide.The Grocery Worker's Relief Fund will be available to anyone currently employed by a grocery store.The fund will be giving out 0 per person on a gift card. Anyone who applies will also be connected with the 211 social services helplines in their area to see if they have other needs.United Way says housing insecurity is one of the top issues people are calling 211 about right now.Mental health has also become a much bigger concern among the people who are calling.“While people might call for financial assistance our call specialists who are trained as they start to enter into dialogue, they do discover that there's more there that the person might have anxiety,” said McCormick. “They might be in a domestic violence situation or have very serious mental health issues.”Grocery workers can start applying for the relief fund on October 1 on the United Way website.
