CAIRO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- As part of bilateral efforts to enhance cultural cooperation between the two great civilizations, China, as the Guest of Honor, will participate in the 43rd Cairo International Book Fair in Egypt."An outstanding Chinese delegation will attend the fair to inform the Egyptian people all about Chinese culture," said Chen Dongyun, cultural counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Egypt.Some 248 publishers, 13 renowned scholars, writers and artists will display about 10,000 books about the achievements made by China in various fields such as politics, economy, science and technology, and culture.The fair, the most important of its kind in the Arab region, will be held on Jan. 29 through Feb. 8 in the Cairo International Conference Center. The annual fair began in 1969.The Chinese hall in the center covers an area of 1,400 square meters, with special areas allocated for a variety of exhibitions about the history of the evolution of Chinese characters, photos reflecting Sino-Egypt friendship and landscape of modern China and intangible cultural heritage.The fair also includes a seminar featuring literature and translation among Chinese and Egyptian writers and artists and a week-long film show in which six Chinese films with Arabic subtitles will be introduced to the audience.Chinese participation reflected the common consensus of the leaders of the two countries to deepen mutual understanding and friendship and will serve to promote the sound and sustainable development of bilateral relations, Chen said.Zhang Jichen, vice president of China National Publications Import and Export (Group) Corporation, which is in charge of the organization of the Chinese activities at the fair, said a cooperation agreement between the General Administration of Press and Publication of China and Egypt's Ministry of Culture.China will also present some 1,000 high-quality books to the National Library and Archives of Egypt and the Alexandria Library.The fair is expected to attract 632 publishers from 29 countries, including 17 in the Middle East. More than two million visitors participate in the fair each year.

UNITED NATIONS, April 7 (Xinhua) -- To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first human space flight, accomplished on April 12, 1961 by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the Russian Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the Russian Federal Space Agency and the ITAR-TASS information agency organized an exhibition which was opened here on Thursday."The first human space flight is not one of the most significant events of the past century, but of human history in general," Vitaly Churkin, the Russian permanent representative to the UN, said at the opening ceremony."It's a symbol of courage, thirst for knowledge, and progress," Churkin said.The exhibition contained archival photos telling the story of the first human space flight and of those who made it possible, and historic pictures of Gagarin.As part of the celebration of human space flight's 50th anniversary the UN Postal Administration designed postal stamps which will be issued on April 12, to tell the story of progress that humankind has made beyond earth's boundaries, as Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information put it."Fifty years have passed since that amazing voyage, but the legend of Gagarin's courage and journey to the 'final frontier' continues to be a source of inspiration for space exploration for peoples and nations around the world," Akasaka said at the opening of the exhibition.According to Akasaka, the exhibition "sparks people's imagination about what is possible through the peaceful use and exploration of outer space."Other attendees included Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov.Gagarin, also known as the Columbus of the Cosmos, traveled into outer space on the height of the Cold War when the Berlin Wall was built, at a moment when it was hardly impossible to imagine that more than 15 nations would work together in humanity' s permanent space outpost -- the International Space Station.The Russian icon of space spoke the historic words "the earth is blue, how wonderful. WASHINGTON, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Tuesday set April 29 as the launch date for Endeavour's final voyage.The date was announced Tuesday at the conclusion of a flight readiness review at Kennedy Space Center. During the meeting, senior NASA and contractor managers assessed the risks associated with the mission and determined the shuttle and station's equipment, support systems and personnel are ready.Liftoff time is 3:47 p.m. EDT (1947 GMT). It will be the 134th shuttle mission overall, the 25th for Endeavour and the 36th shuttle mission to the International Space Station.Endeavour will deliver to the station a 2-billion-dollar, multinational particle detector known as the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer.Space shuttle Endeavour sits on launch pad 39A with the crew aboard minutes before mission managers scrubbed the launch again at Cape Canaveral, Florida, July 13, 2009.The spectrometer, also designated AMS-02, is a particle physics experiment module that is to be mounted on the station. It is designed to search for various types of unusual matter by measuring cosmic rays. Its experiments will help researchers study the formation of the Universe and search for evidence of dark matter and antimatter.Endeavour's two-week mission was led by Commander Mark Kelly. CAPE TOWN, April 30 (Xinhua) -- The World Economic Forum on Africa, scheduled on May 2-4 in Cape Town, South Africa, will see participants exchange views on how the continent can turn to the next chapter of development.The meeting, expected to gather a record 900 participants from over 60 countries, will be held under the theme "From Vision to Action, Africa's Next Chapter," organizers said."We chose this theme because we feel it is very relevant for the events that are taking place on this continent, and the opportunity for growth and investment that the international and African communities are seeing," said Katherine Tweedie, head of Africa for the World Economic Forum.Seven of the fastest growing economies in the world in the next five years will be in sub-Saharan Africa, Tweedie noted, saying that a lot of discussion will be devoted to explore drivers behind this growth.Africa's economic growth in recent years have impressed the world. Though being the most underdeveloped continent, Africa have been more resilient than expected during the global economic crisis.The International Monetary Fund (IMF) have predicted that the continent's growth in 2011 will reach 5.3 percent.Under one of the three thematic pillars, "Shaping Africa's Role in the New Reality," the meeting will explore how Africa can take on a leadership role in the new reality and guard against newly emerging global and regional risks. Participants will look at how Africa can strengthen its representation and negotiation capacity on global platforms such as COP 17 and the G20.Meanwhile, the meeting will look into Africa's industrial diversification, which is widely considered as an effective way to increase competitiveness. Discussions under the thematic pillar of "Fostering Africa's News Champions of Growth" will focus on what innovative and entrepreneurial lessons drive Africa's fastest- growing companies, and how can Africa's emerging economies build capacity in science, technology and innovation to move up the value chain.Another topic expected to attract much attention is Africa's inclusive development. In recent years, African decision makers have been looking for ways to attain inclusive development by translating economic growth into better lives for the people.Marcus Courage, managing director of consulting group Africapractice, said ahead of the meeting that Africa must start measuring its economic growth in terms of job creation and progress of value addition of what it produces, rather than the gross domestic product (GDP), if it has to move from vision to action."One of the challenges is that we measure economic success in therms of GDP. As a result a good part of the discussions will be focusing on issues taking place in this part of Africa, she added.Although South Africa has hosted the World Economic Forum on Africa for a number of times, this year the host is attracting particular attention.South Africa has joined the BRICS group of countries which also include Brazil, Russia, India and China, becoming the only African member in the grouping. It is also the only country from Africa in G20. In November this year, South African city of Durban will host the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.How can the country speak for Africa in the international arena, and what role can it play in facilitating closer cooperation between developing countries is also expected to draw in-depth discussions at the meeting.Meanwhile, participants are also expected to exchange views on issues including Africa's agriculture development, infrastructure construction, China-Africa cooperation, impact of political situation in North African and the Middle East on Africa's economic development, among others.
