People are paying more attention to the supply chains that keep store shelves stocked. The novel coronavirus pandemic disrupted the flow of many products and exposed how crucial supply chains are. These chains are complex, often global networks that make it possible for consumers to get a wider variety of items more quickly. They can also help keep prices down.In normal times, technology and highly-skilled operators keep everything running smoothly. But the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a perfect storm that changed it all.People started panic buying certain items in March. Stores reacted by increasing orders from their suppliers. That put a strain on the supply chain, which was already facing other complications.Workers at all stops of the chain started getting sick. Plants and distribution centers had to close. Historic shutdowns forced delivery route changes that added another layer of chaos. All these changes made it tougher for businesses to keep control of their chains. Now, after months of conserving disinfectant wipes and grocery-store hopping in search of eggs, supply chains are starting to straighten back out. But things are not going back to normal. Closures and restrictions are still common and vary from place to place.Businesses are adapting to make sure their chains stand strong in the face of any future uncertainty.Experts agree that advancing technology will play a key role in what the future looks like. They say transparency will, too, as the consumer’s sustainability and ethical expectations evolve. 1544

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A Central Florida man is on a mission to do something nobody else has ever done: become the first person with Down Syndrome to complete a full Ironman.Chris Nikic has become an inspiration to people around the world and it started with a simple mission.Nik Nikic encouraged his son to push himself 1% more each day.“We came up with this concept of just get a little better today than yesterday,” Nik explained. Now, 21-year-old Chris is about to do something incredible. On November 7, he’ll swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run a full 26.2 mile marathon in Panama City Beach.“I want to inspire others so that they can be like me and so that one day they can do it too,” Chris said with a smile. If he completes the race within 17 hours, Chris will be the first person with Down Syndrome to ever finish an Ironman. He also has a message for the other competitors: “You better watch out, because I’m going to beat you!”“Really, you’re going to beat all of them?” his dad asked.“Yeah!” Chris answered enthusiastically.Chris has spent several months swimming off the coast of Pinellas County as he trains with coach Dan Grieb for the big race and gets used to the choppy Gulf of Mexico waters.“I’ve learned that you can teach anybody anything if you’re willing to love them through their disability or love them through their struggle,” Grieb added.Chris has been documenting his journey on social media. Thousands of people all around the world have sent him messages of support, including many parents of children with Down Syndrome who say Chris is motivating their kids to also strive for excellence.“They say I’m their hero,” Chris added.Chris is already brainstorming his next target: Competing in the 2022 Special Olympics and finding a special someone to share all these accomplishments with.“I want to get married. I’m not waiting anymore. I want to find a hot blonde,” he said with a hearty chuckle.Shane Facteau says Chris will join a long list of incredible people to finish the race including the oldest finisher, 85-year-old Hiromu Inada.“Chris is joining a long lineage of very interesting and unique people who have challenged themselves,” Facteau said.“It’s really helped me learn that some of the greatest among us are people that we label with words like disability,” Grieb added.Chris says he continues to strive for excellence by never quitting, overcoming his fears and smiling all along the way. He also has an impeccable sense of humor. For example, he says running is his favorite of the three activities, “because it makes my butt cute and the ladies like that!”This story originally reported by Sarah Hollenbeck on abcactionnews.com. 2689

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — The city of Pasadena has kept outdoor dining open despite Los Angeles County restricting restaurants to takeout to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. A surge of COVID-19 cases last week in the nation’s most populous county led to a three-week end to outdoor dining and then a broader stay-home order that took effect Monday. Officials in the city famous for its Rose Parade said they chose more aggressive enforcement because Pasadena is smaller than other cities in the county and can more closely monitor its 600 restaurants. But it announced more restrictions Tuesday, saying only people in the same household can gather, which applies to outdoor restaurant seating. 704

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) — A Trolls doll is being pulled off store shelves amid complaints it promotes child abuse. Toymaker Hasbro said Wednesday that it's in the process of removing the "Trolls World Tour Giggle and Sing Poppy" from the market and will be offering customers a replacement doll of the popular female character. The doll had been designed to giggle when placed in a sitting position, but some parents complain the sound activation button is inappropriately placed between the doll's legs. In a statement to the Providence Journal, Hasbro spokeswoman Julie Duffy said that the placement of the sensor wasn't intentional. An online petition suggests the doll is "conditioning our children to think pedophilia is OK." 735
